Lance Bennett / Hazem Kandil / Guobin Yang Scope: Rapidly emerging technologies have become a crucial component of movement and contention, ranging from strikes and protests to riots and civil disobedience to revolution and war. We have witnessed the widespread use of digitally mediated communication during large-scale political protests in promoting social justice like Black Lives Matter and the #MeToo movement, but also intelligence and information warfare that contribute to precise strikes, effective surveillance, and reconnaissance in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Interest in this field endures, while interrogation of the role of technology in movement proliferates. Still, contestation over the nature and degree of effectiveness of technology in movement and contention remains. And theoretical and methodological reflections are badly needed to identify challenges and opportunities for advancing the field. This international conference seeks to address and advance such discussion. We look for original, rigorous, and creative contributions and reflections that examine technology and movement/contention. Submissions can be primarily theoretical or based on empirical studies but may also include innovative suggestions for overcoming methodological challenges. In all forms, the submissions should make explicit, original, and substantial contributions to the relevance and implications of the role of technology in movement. PhD Course: An international PhD course with the same theme on technology and movement will be offered in the conference. The participant will receive 3 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) if s/he join both the conference with presentation and the PhD seminar (on 10 May, 2023), or 1.5 ECTS (for those who only join the PhD seminar). *** First Call for Papers *** UMAP ’23: 31st ACM Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization June 26 - 29, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus https://www.um.org/umap2023/ ACM UMAP is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information. ACM UMAP is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB. User Modeling Inc., as the core Steering Committee, oversees the conference organization. The proceedings, published by ACM, will be part of the ACM Digital Library. The theme of UMAP 2023 is "Personalization in Times of Crisis”. Specifically, we welcome submissions that highlight the impact that critical periods (such as the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing wars, and climate change, to name a few) can have on user modeling, personalization, and adaptation of (intelligent) systems; the focus is on investigations that capture how these trying times may have influenced user behavior and whether new models are required. Virtual Assistants, Conversational Interactions, and Personalized Human-robot Interaction This track invites works investigating new models and techniques for adapting synthetic companions (e.g., virtual assistants, chatbots, social robots) to individual users. With the conversational modality so in vogue across disciplines, this track welcomes work highlighting the model and deployment of synthetic companions driven by conversational search and recommendation paradigms. Research Methods and Reproducibility This track invites submissions on methodologies to evaluate personalized systems, benchmarks, and measurement scales, with particular attention to the reproducibility of results and techniques. Furthermore, the track looks for submissions that report new insights from reproducing existing works. Submission and Review Process Submissions for any of the aforementioned tracks should have a maximum length of *14 pages* (excluding references) in the ACM new single-column format (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) (Papers of any length up to 14 pages are encouraged; reviewers will comment on whether the size is appropriate for the contribution.) On behalf of Zachary McDowell, Briankle Chang, and myself, I am pleased to announce the publication of Volume 9, Issue 1 of communication +1, with Issue 2 forthcoming in late November/early December. We thank the authors for their excellent contributions to this volume, which marks the journal’s ten-year anniversary, and we are excited to share these pieces. Please find below a description of Volume 9, a link to Issue 1, and a list of the contents of Issues 1 and 2. communication +1's 10-year anniversary: A Decade of Futures (of Communication) Edited by Zachary McDowell and Peter Royal What we proposed for this collection was to return again to explore the boundaries and the future of communication as an area of study and as an interdisciplinary and intersectional space of inquiry. communication +1's first issue, Futures of Communication (2012), did just that by addressing a wide variety of topics. The objective to address the "futures" of communication as a field of inquiry was and is not to identify research topics that may be popular or fashionable; rather, it is in the (re)establishment of "communication" as an enduring theoretical concept that cuts across the humanities and social sciences. The future of "communication" therefore designates its significance guaranteed by its interdisciplinary promise (but also arrives with its own concerns). Apropos of the discussion about where to go when Musk takes over Twitter, I wanted to share a piece I just posted on The Conversation pushing back against the tendency in news (and some scholarship) to reduce alternative social media to right-wing social media sites, such as Gab: https://theconversation.com/citizens-social-media-can-provide-an-antidote-t… I'd like us to start talking about citizens' social media (which I believe the fediverse might be) as opposed to both corporate social media like Twitter and right-wing social media like Gab. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMARTCOMP 2023 -- Call for Workshops Proposal https://smartcomp.isis.vanderbilt.edu/ June 26-30, 2023, Nashville, Tennessee ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SMARTCOMP 2023 is the 9th edition of the premier conference on Smart Computing and will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, hosted by Vanderbilt University, hopefully as a fully in presence event. Smart Computing is a multidisciplinary domain based on the synergistic influence of advances in sensor-based technologies, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, edge computing, big data analytics, machine learning, cognitive computing, and artificial intelligence. Applications of smart computing can be found in different societal domains including, but not limited to, transportation, energy, environmental protection, smart and connected communities, healthcare, banking, industrial systems, entertainment, and social media. SMARTCOMP 2023 will provide an international technical forum for experts from industry and academia to exchange ideas and present results of on-going research in most state-of-the-art areas of computing, sensing, and communications in heterogeneous application domains. The Workshops co-chairs of SMARTCOMP 2023 invite proposals for half or full day workshops affiliated with the conference, held in Nashville, Tennessee during June 26-30, 2023. The purpose of the workshops is to stimulate discussions on state-of-the-art, emerging, visionary, and also controversial topics in the area of Smart Computing, and to create new opportunities for attendees' interactions in a less formal and more sharply focused context than at the conference itself. Therefore, workshops should be organized to promote lively interactions, and appropriate plans should be described in the written workshop proposals. Papers presented in the SMARTCOMP 2023 workshops will be included in the conference proceedings and in IEEE Xplore. The organizers of the accepted workshops are required to publicize the workshop through disseminating the call for papers, soliciting submissions, organizing the review process, and deciding upon the final workshop program. At least one organizer should be physically present at the workshop in the case of SMARTCOMP will take place at least partially in presence and there will be no travel restrictions due to the pandemic situation. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Each workshop proposal must include the following: * the title and acronym of the workshop; * the names, addresses, and short bios of up to 200 words for each organizer; workshops may have up to three organizers. It is strongly recommended that organizers belong to at least two different institutions. * A brief description (up to 2 page) including: o the technical issues that the workshop will address, o the reasons the workshop is of interest to the SMARTCOMP community, o a short discussion on other available workshops and conferences on similar topics and an outline of why the proposed workshop is unique; o a description of the communities groups the workshop aims to attract, o the names of potential Program Committee members; o the planned format of the workshop (e.g., keynotes, paper presentations, posters, demos) and duration (e.g., one-day, half-day), including a strategy to facilitate lively discussions and involvement of the attendees - possibly in an online or hybrid format; o if applicable, a description of past versions of the workshop, including dates, organizers, number of submitted and accepted papers, and number of attendees; o if the workshop is going to be organized for the first time, an estimate of the expected number of submissions and attendees; o a tentative Call for Papers (as complete as possible); o a description of the plans for publicity and workshop Website.
