The iSchool is a place for the interdisciplinary study of information, broadly conceived, and is focused on preparing students for living, thinking, and working in the digital age. The iSchool is the state of Arizona's only member of the iSchool caucus, a consortium of over 100 international programs focused on "enhancing the lives of people, the productivity of companies, the innovation cycles of industries, the design of technologies, the policies that govern technology and information use, information services to communities, and much more." For students with interests in technology-focused areas, having advanced object-oriented programming skills, experience with machine learning toolkits such as scikit-learn or TensorFlow, and/or experience with widely used real-time development platforms such as Unity is a plus. Past instructional experiences, although not a requirement for admission, are also beneficial and should be highlighted in application materials. Funded positions will be available for select graduate students; those students will receive tuition remission and a stipend as they engage in instructional or research-related activity. Manuscript submission is now open for a Research Topic (Special Issue) that we are co-editing on "Virtual Presence: Loneliness, technology and the production of human (dis)connectedness". We are interested in empirical, methodological and theoretical work, and are currently inviting abstracts of no more than 300 words by 15th January 2023. CALL FOR PAPERS Algorithms for Her? 2: Feminist approaches to digital infrastructures, cultures and economies March 23rd-24th 2023 – Sheffield University Our daily lives are increasingly governed by algorithmic processes of selection, identification and discrimination. This international symposium focuses on the intersectional forms of injustice that algorithms—and the systems in which they are embedded—help to propagate and sustain. Given the significance and ubiquity of such processes in everyday life, and their disproportionate effects on those marginalised across intersections of gender, sexuality, class and race, this event will create a dedicated space for the discussion of algorithmic forms of oppression and inequality. Algorithms for Her? 2 seeks to support in-depth analysis of algorithms—together with their functions and entanglements—with critical feminist works that meaningfully examine the production and ethics of bias. “Newness” is often fetishised in analyses of digital culture. The approaches sidelined by this fetishisation are often those by women, nonbinary folks and scholars of colour, who have struggled to have their contributions included in dominant canons of thought. In recent years we have welcomed the increased visibility of critical perspectives on algorithms that are inclusive, intersectional, reflective and feminist, but there is still work to be done. Following the success of the first Algorithms for Her? event in January 2020, this conference seeks to give a platform to perspectives on algorithms and algorithmic culture that are still under-represented in the academy. We welcome both traditional conference presentations (15 minutes in length) and creative alternatives such as performances or artistic interventions. We invite contributions relating to… – Intersectional feminist work critically examining machine learning, content moderation and algorithms (broadly defined). – Intersectional feminist work examining software/tools/app design and infrastructure. – Intersectional feminist work on platform labour and inequalities. – Feminist methodologies for studying and teaching algorithms and the ethical questions they raise. – Industry/nonprofit cases of addressing discrimination/bias sustained by and ‘within’ technologies. National Survey on the Experiences in Academia of People who are Deaf or have Hearing Loss under Remote Work Conditions

Please consider distributing the survey below within your personal networks: Dr. Rachel MagShamhráinand I, both academics at UCC, are conducting a nationwide survey on the experiences of Deaf people in an academic setting under the remote work and learning conditions imposed by COVID-19 with a view to collating this information into a position paper which may help with the experiences people with hearing loss have under imposed or voluntary remote working conditions in the future. We would be very grateful if you would share this survey as appropriate at your institution, and, once we have collated the information post-survey, we are happy to share the data with you if you wish. Hildebrand on her book *Aerial Play: Drone Medium, Mobility, Communication, and Culture. * Check it out here: https://campanthropology.org Best, Ilana Press blurb: This book explores recreational uses of consumer drones from the lenses of media ecology, mobile communication, mobilities research, and science and technology studies. In this provocative ethnography, Julia M. Hildebrand discusses camera drones as mobile media for meaningful play. She thus widens perspectives onto the flying camera as foremost unmanned aircraft, spying tool, or dangerous toy towards a more comprehensive understanding of its potentials. How should we situate drone practices in recreational spaces? What ways of seeing, moving, and being do hobby drones open up? Across chapters about drone geography, communication, mobility, visuality, and human-machine relations, *Aerial Play* introduces novel frameworks for drone affordances, such as communication *on the fly*, disembodied mobilities, auratic vertical play, and drone-mindedness. In the mobile companionship with her own drone, Hildebrand contributes an innovative “auto-technographic” method for the self-reflective study of media and mobility. Ultimately, her grounded and aerial fieldwork illuminates new technological, mobile, visual, and social relations in everyday spaces.

Yuan (University of Illinois Chicago, USA) The general aims and scope of this special issue: When the 2022 Winter Olympics opened in Beijing amidst stringent Covid rules and escalating tension between China and the U.S.-led Western Bloc, commentators both within and outside China took the chance to draw a comparison with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which at the time was widely hailed as China’s ‘coming out party’. While the New York Times called the 2022 Games ‘divisive’ and characterized it as featuring many walls, Chinese social media users could not help reminiscing the ostensible ‘Golden Era’ of 2008, when the heyday of globalization was yet to be superseded by a new era of Cold War. Much seems to have changed within the short timespan of fifteen years. As the liberal camp’s euphoria over “the End of History” gave way to overblown fear of the “China threat”, the agenda of Chinese communication research is also shifting. In the 2000s, observers outside China had great expectations for the democratizing potential of civil society, of the free market, and of the Internet as a universal technology of decentralized communication. Today, facing the tightening of grips over political expression in China, and the crisis of liberal democracy amid surging tides of populism worldwide, in both of which digital technologies played an important role, the outlook is drastically different. The technological prowess of Chinese platform companies combined with the unrelenting political control of the authoritarian state seems to present the doomsday scenario of a digital dystopia, where not only freedom of expression within China is suppressed but also the digital sovereignty of democratic countries around the world could be undermined. Media and technology sectors are at the forefront of escalating geopolitical tensions. The US-China tech war, which started with the sanctioning of ZTE and Huawei in 2017 has escalated rapidly into a full-scale blockage of Chinese tech firms ranging from semiconductors to clouds. China’s ramping up of its indigenous innovation drive and Chinese firms’ continued, though frustrated, overseas expansion (via initiatives like the Belt and Road and Go Out) only seem to have exacerbated the confrontation. Meanwhile, the Chinese state’s toughened regulation of its homegrown Big Techs, and domestic technology firms’ expansion into the countryside (encouraged by new policy initiatives like rural revitalization, poverty alleviation, and double circulation) signaled new logics in state’s governance of the tech industry, but so far has generated mixed results. The expansion of technological surveillance during the COVID-19 pandemic, though has helped the government to effectively contain the spread of the virus, also stokes public anxiety over excessive control. At this new historical conjuncture, the question of ‘Whither China?’ becomes ever more elusive. Is China the ultimate Other of the West that can only be understood as an entity of deficiency and deviation in relation to the liberal order? Should China scholars make more effort to investigate the current moment of contradiction and contestation with reference to both the nation’s own trajectory of development and logic of history and in global comparison? How should we understand China’s expanding global reach and international presence and evaluate its implications for global equity? In order to reflect on these broad theoretical and epistemological issues, we invite contributions that are on the one hand based on robust empirical research, while on the other hand nurture the ambition of revising the intellectual agenda of our field. We encourage potential contributors to collectively reconsider some of the fundamental assumptions underpinning our intellectual inquiry, reconfigure our theoretical toolboxes, and redefine our empirical focus. * Steering away from the false dichotomy of the Internet as the instrument of democratization vs. the digital dystopia of Black Mirror, how can we have more nuanced discussion about the political economy of Chinese technology companies and about the social shaping of technology in the Chinese context? * Moving beyond methodological nationalism, what analytical frameworks can we adopt to better explain at one level the transnational expansion of Chinese platform companies, and at another the subnational stratification of media and communication industries in China? * Recognising that we are not necessarily moving toward the historical endpoint of a liberal democratic triumph, how would China’s past inform an investigation into its present and imagination about its future? We recognize that Chinese communication research has become more interdisciplinary over the years, incorporating analytical tools and insights from other disciplines such as sociology, political science, STS, and anthropology. We therefore encourage contributors of this special issue to continue thinking outside of disciplinary boundaries. We welcome theoretically ambitious, conceptually-driven and empirically-grounded research along the following lines: –Chinese media and tech companies’ global expansion –Indigenous innovation, new emphasis on “strategic technologies”, and global supply chain –Digital Silk Road and information infrastructure in the Global South –Global venture capital, financialization, and digital platforms vis-a-vis geopolitical tensions –The state’s antitrust campaign and regulation over tech companies (and consequences for tech workers) –Changing institutional arrangements of media production and consumption and in contemporary China –The historical trajectory and contemporary characteristics of public communication spaces –Discursive positions, ideological contestation, and identity formation at both transnational and subnational levels –Media, technology, and the development of the countryside (rural revitalization, poverty reduction, tech firms’ rural expansion etc.) –Urban/rural divide and mediated inequality –Transnational media production and consumption and the Chinese diaspora –Impacts of Covid-19 Pandemic on Chinese media and tech and visions for Post-Covid China The submission deadline for abstract is January 1, 2023.
