Call for Proposals – CARGC Fellows’ Symposium 2023 Theme: Doing Global Media Studies: Theories, Practices, Reflections Date of conference: March 22 - 23, 2023 Deadline for abstract submissions: December 15, 2022 To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication at the University of Pennsylvania, the 2023 biannual fellows’ symposium will reflect on evolving concepts and methodologies in the field of global communication and media studies. We are witnessing ongoing global crises, from widespread displacements and climate disasters, to pandemics and the rising threat of fascism. In light of these circumstances, we invite emerging scholars, artists, and activists to explore what a global approach to media and communication can do today. What is at stake in studying global communication and media at this historical moment? We seek to decenter Western epistemologies by foregrounding the local, the situated, and the relational interconnectedness of cultures, institutions, and infrastructures through media. In an effort to think beyond the national frameworks typically employed by area studies, we foreground transregional methods and frameworks of study that situate the global within the local and vice versa. Bringing together questions of the global and the local allows us as scholars to be reflective and reflexive, to situate our own scholarship within the world, rather than from an imagined, 'objective' outside. We invite scholarly and creative projects, including research papers, creative writing, video essays or documentaries, sound or audio projects, artistic installations, and performances. We welcome submissions from early career scholars, as well as artists and activists whose work engages these issues. Submissions from scholars, artists, and activists based in the Global South are particularly encouraged. Topics may include: * Activist interventions, inclusive practices, and in/equity in global communication and media * Epistemologies of the planetary, the global, and the local and their interrelations * Mediating (neo)colonialism, environmental extractivism, and competing sovereignties * The politics of translation, comparative frameworks, and regional approaches * Media’s im/mobilities and south-to-south flows of cultural exchange * Global perspectives on ( the failures of) communicating mis/disinformation, nonsense, and noise * Global political economy of media industries, platforms, and popular culture The keynote address will be given by Professor Purnima Mankekar. Conference Format & Timeline The CARGC Fellows symposium will take place at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and online on March 22 & 23, 2023. The symposium is planned as a hybrid event, with in-person participation highly encouraged. It will feature a keynote address by Dr. Purnima Mankekar and roundtable sessions (in which participants will give 5-8 minute flash presentations of their work). Senior scholars will act as discussion facilitators for the roundtable sessions, responding to and providing feedback on participants’ work. The purpose of these roundtables is to foster discussion between participants before opening up to a wider Q&A from the audience. Accepted participants will also be invited to a professional development workshop on teaching global media studies and communication. * Keynote address and in-person roundtable sessions will be made accessible to global audiences through Zoom. ACM UMAP is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB. User Modeling Inc., as the core Steering Committee, oversees the conference organization. The proceedings, published by ACM, will be part of the ACM Digital Library. The theme of UMAP 2023 is "Personalization in Times of Crisis”. Specifically, we welcome submissions that highlight the impact that critical periods (such as the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing wars, and climate change, to name a few) can have on user modeling, personalization, and adaptation of (intelligent) systems; the focus is on investigations that capture how these trying times may have influenced user behavior and whether new models are required. While we encourage submissions related to this theme, the scope of the conference is not limited to the theme only. Personalized Recommender Systems This track invites works from researchers and practitioners on recommender systems. In addition to mature research works addressing technical aspects of recommendations, we welcome research contributions that address questions related to user perception, decision-making, and the business value of recommender systems. Adaptive, Semantic, Knowledge, and Social Graphs This track welcomes works focused on the use of knowledge representations (i.e., novel knowledge bases), graph algorithms (i.e., graph embedding techniques), and social network analysis at the service of addressing all aspects of personalization, user model building, and personal experience in online social systems. Moreover, this track invites works in adaptive hypermedia, as well as semantic and social web. Intelligent User Interfaces This track invites works exploring how to make the interaction between computers and people smarter and more productive, leveraging solutions from human-computer interaction, data mining, natural language processing, information visualization, and knowledge representation and reasoning. Personalizing Learning Experiences through User Modeling This track invites researchers, developers, and practitioners from various disciplines to submit their innovative learning solutions, share acquired experiences, and discuss their modeling challenges for personalized adaptive learning. Fairness, Transparency, Accountability, and Privacy Researchers, developers, and practitioners have a social responsibility to account for the impact that technologies have on individuals (users, providers, and other stakeholders) and society. This track invites works related to the science of building, maintaining, evaluating, and studying adaptive systems that are fair, transparent, respectful of users’ privacy, beneficial to society, and accountable for their impacts. Personalization for Persuasive and Behavior Change Systems This track invites submissions focused on personalization and tailoring for persuasive technologies, including but not limited to personalization models, user models, computational personalization, design, and evaluation methods. It also welcomes work that brings attention to the user experience and designing personalized and adaptive behavior change technologies. Virtual Assistants, Conversational Interactions, and Personalized Human-robot Interaction This track invites works investigating new models and techniques for adapting synthetic companions (e.g., virtual assistants, chatbots, social robots) to individual users. With the conversational modality so in vogue across disciplines, this track welcomes work highlighting the model and deployment of synthetic companions driven by conversational search and recommendation paradigms. Research Methods and Reproducibility This track invites submissions on methodologies to evaluate personalized systems, benchmarks, and measurement scales, with particular attention to the reproducibility of results and techniques. Furthermore, the track looks for submissions that report new insights from reproducing existing works. Submission and Review Process Submissions for any of the aforementioned tracks should have a maximum length of *14 pages* (excluding references) in the ACM new single-column format (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) (Papers of any length up to 14 pages are encouraged; reviewers will comment on whether the size is appropriate for the contribution.) New book (free open access) on disinformation online published this week by University of Michigan Press: *Creating Chaos Online: Disinformation and Subverted Post-Publics* by Asta Zelenkauskaite: https://www.fulcrum.org/concern/monographs/7h149s20q Short description: With the prevalence of disinformation geared to instill doubt rather than clarity, Creating Chaos Online unmasks disinformation when it attempts to pass as deliberation in the public sphere and distorts the democratic processes. Asta Zelenkauskaitė finds that repeated tropes justifying Russian trolling were found to circulate across not only all analyzed media platforms' comments but also across two analyzed sociopolitical contexts suggesting the orchestrated efforts behind messaging. Through a dystopian vision of publics that are expected to navigate in the sea of uncertain both authentic and orchestrated content, pushed by human and nonhuman actors, Creating Chaos Online offers a concept of post-publics. The idea of post-publics is reflected within the continuum of treatment of public, counter public, and anti-public. This book argues that affect-instilled arguments used in public deliberation in times of uncertainty, along with whataboutism constitute a playbook for chaos online. ICA 2023 PRE-CONFERENCE Mis/disinformation and the artifices of authenticity and authentication - Date: Wednesday, May 24, 2023. 9:00 - 17:00 - Venue: York University, Toronto - Division affiliation: Communication & Technology Division - Fee: Registration will be free - Call for Abstract deadline: December 20, 2022 Description: The construction of authentic-feeling yet untrue information, content, experiences, and relations is central to successful mis/disinformation campaigns. The most outrageous lies can catalyze opinions, behaviours and actions–as long as they appear authentic in spirit, or come from a place or person that feels authentic. Authenticity is the lever of the mis/disinformation complex: it is cultivated and maintained through investments in mass-personal social networks (Gehl & Lawson, 2022) that articulate together Russian bots and Donald Trump, global conspiracies and one’s mundane chats. They channel interest in the health benefits of oregano oil into paranoia about covert mass chip implants through vaccination campaigns. National and global mis/disinformation networks rearticulate authenticity within local contexts while leveraging social media techniques and content. Such industries of mis/disinformation are linked to violent and subtle forms of erasure, othering, and denial, from the rejection of and attacks against the inauthentic human according to fascist logics (Bratich, 2022), to the deadly denial of basic realities like climate change or the benefits of masking during an air-borne pandemic. Thus the rejection of most values and realities as inauthentic in network cultures fuels cynicism, and motivates shitposting, trolling, and bullshitting. Yet the contradiction of these reactionary postures is that they can only perpetuate the very desire for authenticity that they deny. The industry of mis/disinformation comes in to fill in that breach: it invests in new distributions of the sensible (Rancière, 2019) and establishes relations of absolute trust within homophilic networks and communities of the same (Chun, 2021). It also outwardly delegitimizes the suffering of others and inwardly deadens and represses any true sense of empathy towards an Other. After dismantling and reassembling the socio-psychological experience of users in such fashion, the industry of mis/disinformation turns towards justifying and legitimizing fear and hatred by articulating them with other social emotions, formulating explosive cocktails of affective intensities that fill in for the yearning for authenticity. Traditional affective structures are reworked to face threats: fear for oneself, one’s family and one’s future about to be destroyed by enemies near and close. In response to these threats, the networked and physical spaces of encounters with radically different others become the dangerous thing from which to turn away, with many users channelling their affects instead towards nationalistic pride, anger and revenge, blind trust in one’s closed off community, and quasi-religious ecstasy in communing with like-minded people. In summary: fabricated mis/disinformation involves the construction of felt, visceral experiences that are then defined as authentic. Through this, authenticity becomes an artifice with direct affective and emotional impact. Mis/disinformation is not just about troubling notions of truth and facticity to destabilize rational democratic communication, but about the production of performances of authenticity both mundane and spectacular. These performances establish norms and practices of authentication – how something comes to be perceived as authentic by a receiving party. And these artifices take on multiple forms, from rhetorical performances to the labour of algorithmic recommendations, from CGI to discursive norms. They mobilize proxies; technical, discursive and cultural norms; sociotechnological affordances; bodies; and cognitive and non-cognitive processes. They feed off and ride on affective, cultural and informational dynamics, which they organize through fast responding junctures and disjunctures, linking disparate data points into clusters that then gain greater network visibility and therefore normalization, all the while constantly refashioning themselves to respond to informational flows and cultural and political reactions. For this pre-conference, we seek critical explorations of authenticity and authentication as they relate to digital manipulation and digital artifice. - How is authenticity in turn caught, created, faked, authenticated and managed through digital assemblages? - How is it both constructed as a felt experience, as well as machinized though automated recognition patterns? - If authenticity is key to misinformation, then what kind of interventions can we imagine to question, and undermine such articulation? - What new algorithms of authenticity (Chun 2021) could we imagine and deploy? We are particularly interested in research that examines the fabrication of digitally mediated authentic experiences, be they non-conscious and habitual, or spectacular and deeply meaningful. We are interested in research that explores how objects and persons come to be seen and experienced as authentic and inauthentic, which includes paying attention to how authenticity – in its affective, emotional, non-conscious and cognitive dimensions – is constructed via technical affordances, media habits, political rhetoric, mass-personal communication, network rhythms, recommendation algorithms and targeted campaigns. Equally, we are interested in work that critically and creatively challenges the articulation of authenticity with misinformation. We welcome a wide array of methodological approaches – qualitative, quantitative, speculative, creative, participatory, collaborative and others. We are open to different formats of intervention, from traditional papers to research-creation. We also welcome proposals for short workshops (1 hour length), demonstrations and other modes of collaborative inquiries. Research and technical papers are expected to present significant and original contributions validated with the targeted end-users. Submissions should clearly state the progress beyond the existing state-of- the-art and the expected societal benefits of the developed technology.
