Register<https://yorku.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwpd-CqqzMqGt0DdiKba-Q4bVt5hQ00PnF8> Title: Ethics for the majority world: AI and the question of violence at scale In this work, I argue that hegemonic AI is becoming a more powerful force capable of perpetrating global violence through three epistemic processes: datafication (extraction and dispossession), algorithmization (algorithmic mediation and governmentality) and automation (violence, inequality and displacement of responsibility). These articulated mechanisms lead to global classification orders and epistemic, economic, social, cultural and environmental inequality. Hegemonic AI can be thought of as a bio-necro-technopolitical machine that serves to maintain the capitalist, colonialist and patriarchal order of the world. To make this point, the proposed approach bridges the macro and micropolitical, building on Suely Rolnik’s call for understanding the effects of the macropolitical in the micropolitical, as well as what feminist black scholar Patricia Hill Collins made visible about oppressive systems operating at the structural, institutional and individual levels. I advocate for a feminist and decolonial ethics concerned with the preservation of life and the shared responsibility of AI harms to the majority of the planet. Dr. Paola Ricaurte is associate professor in the Department of Media and Digital Culture at Tecnológico de Monterrey and faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Together with Nick Couldry and Ulises Mejías, she co-founded Tierra Común, a network of academics, practitioners and activists interested in decolonizing data. She is a member of the <A+> Alliance for Inclusive Algorithms and leads the Latin American and Caribbean hub of the Feminist AI Research Network. Building on the momentum of that successful, entirely online workshop at AoIR 2021, we are offering a half-day (4-hour) undergraduate-teaching-focused workshop for the 2022 conference. The idea behind this workshop is that teaching is a big part of our academic lives, and in the classroom (on campus or virtual), our students’ understandings of social media and internet use don’t always align with broader press or research narratives. What do we learn from our students about the internet, how are we using the internet to teach, and what’s the best way of bringing AoIR research into our classrooms? How do we use the internet in teaching when our students don’t have broadband access, aren’t digitally-savvy, and when our institutions do not offer robust technical infrastructures or support? As professors with experience teaching that spans types of institutions, student populations, and institutional support, we understand that there are no one-size fits all solutions to teaching in ever changing technological and social contexts. Also, and building on last year’s workshop, this year’s workshop will attend to the ways that teaching loads, expectations, terms, and more. are different in different regions of the world. For that reason the workshop will be discussion/conversation-based so we can all learn from and with one another. The main event will be held in-person in Dublin, with the workshop planned primarily as an in-person event, but virtual participation by some registrants can also be accommodated by connecting them to each other and the in-person conversation over Zoom. The hybrid plans will remain flexible as the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and other variables may demand and will be announced closer to the event. This workshop will adhere to AoIR’s Statement of Principles and Statement of Inclusivity <https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/>, which is a commitment to academic freedom, equality of opportunity, and human dignity. *** First Call for Workshops and Minisymposia *** 29th International European Conference on Parallel and Distributed Computing (Euro-Par 2023) August 28 - September 1, 2023, St. Raphael Resort, Limassol, Cyprus http://2023.euro-par.org SCOPE Euro-Par is the prime European conference covering all aspects of parallel and distributed processing, ranging from theory to practice, from small to the largest parallel and distributed systems and infrastructures, from fundamental computational problems to applications, from architecture, compiler, language and interface design and implementation, to tools, support infrastructures, and application performance aspects. To provide a meeting point for researchers to discuss and exchange new ideas and hot topics related to parallel and distributed computing and their applications, Euro-Par 2023 will co-locate workshops and, for the first time, minisymposia with the main conference. This is an invitation to send proposals for the workshop and, for the first time, a minisymposium program. Both workshops and minisymposia will be held on August 28 - August 29, 2023, the first two days of the conference. WORKSHOPS Workshop Proposal Guidelines The proposals should include the following information: - Workshop title and acronym, preference for length (half or full-day) - Information of the organizers, including a short biography of each organizer (5-10 lines). Each workshop will have a single main organizer, the corresponding contact. Others can be co-organizers. All the organizers must be a staff member at an institution or a company, and no PhD or other students can be organizers. - A tentative program committee (10-15 members) - Motivation of the workshop: * scientific objective * interest to the Euro-Par community * positioning with respect to the currently existing Euro-Par workshops - Description of the workshop: * content * format (contributed papers, invited talks, panels, posters or any other kind of activity including european project meetings) * organizational aspects - Workshop background (number of previous editions jointly with Europar or in any other format) - Link to international projects/initiatives The decision about the acceptance/rejection of a workshop proposal will be made on the basis of the overall quality of the proposal and the degree to which it matches the scope of the conference. In the case that several workshop proposals have very similar objectives and scopes, a merge of overlapping workshops may be recommended. The topics covered by a workshop should not overlap with the main topics of the conference. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis. Proposals can already be sent, and the organizers may be notified before the notification deadline in case of a strong proposal. Workshop Organizer Responsibilities - Preparing the call for papers for the workshop and publicizing it - Preparing and maintaining the workshop Web site including the relevant sections according to the organization guidelines - Selecting the workshop program committee considering that each member of the committee should make at least one review - Selecting papers through a rigorous peer-review process including at least three reviews per submission using the provided EasyChair installation and considering the possible conflicts of interest - Delivering the final workshop program to the Euro-Par 2020 conference co-chairs in time - Delivering the preliminary workshop proceedings in time before the conference - Providing the Euro-Par Steering Committee with a Management Report, after the conference, with key indicators such as: number of submitted and accepted papers, program committee and review process management - Delivering the final workshop proceedings with a revised version of the papers in time after the conference in the required Springer LNCS format (12 pages max.) and writing a preface to the workshop. Camera-ready papers will be published only if the management report has been delivered - Short papers can be accepted and presented at the workshop. However, to be included in the formal Springer proceedings, the minimum length is of 10 pages per paper - Registering for the conference - Meet the deadlines according to the organization guidelines Workshop Proceedings and Paper Review The workshop proceedings will be published in a separate LNCS workshop volume after the conference. The principal coordinator of each workshop will appear as co-editor of the workshop volume. Registered workshop participants will receive an electronic copy of the volume by email. All authors of accepted papers will be requested to sign a Springer copyright form. The Euro-Par organizers will provide an EasyChair setup for all Euro-Par 2020 workshops, and its use is mandatory to facilitate paper submissions, reviewing, and collecting the camera-ready versions. The workshop papers will not be published in the proceedings otherwise. Each workshop will be an independent track within the Workshops' EasyChair installation, but it will be fully manageable by the respective organizers. Papers of less than 10 pages will be considered as short papers that can be presented at the conference but not published in the proceedings. I apologize for the confusion. -hk ----- Adrienne Shaw (Temple University) and I (Holly Kruse, Rogers State University) are offering the Association of Internet Researchers’ second-ever pre-conference undergraduate teaching workshop, and first-ever in-person version of the workshop. There are still two or three openings available, so if you’re going to be in Dublin at the conference and would like to participate in the workshop on Wednesday, November 2 from 1:30-4:30 IST, please read more about the workshop and how to register for it here: https://aoir.org/aoir2022/preconfwrkshop/ <https://aoir.org/aoir2022/preconfwrkshop/> If you won’t be in Dublin but would like to audit the workshop, we will accepting up to 20 auditors who will be able to watch and listen to it via Zoom. Best wishes, Holly holly.kruse(a)gmail.com <mailto:holly.kruse@gmail.com> ——— Undergraduate Teaching Workshop Organizers: Holly Kruse, Rogers State University and Adrienne Shaw, Temple University Last year we (Adrienne Shaw, Temple University and Holly Kruse, Rogers State University, along with Emily van der Nagel, Monash University) organized a first-ever Undergraduate Teaching Workshop at AoIR in order to address an overlooked area at AoIR conferences that is of critical importance to many AoIR members. Building on the momentum of that successful, entirely online workshop at AoIR 2021, we are offering a half-day (4-hour) undergraduate-teaching-focused workshop for the 2022 conference. The idea behind this workshop is that teaching is a big part of our academic lives, and in the classroom (on campus or virtual), our students’ understandings of social media and internet use don’t always align with broader press or research narratives. What do we learn from our students about the internet, how are we using the internet to teach, and what’s the best way of bringing AoIR research into our classrooms? How do we use the internet in teaching when our students don’t have broadband access, aren’t digitally-savvy, and when our institutions do not offer robust technical infrastructures or support? As professors with experience teaching that spans types of institutions, student populations, and institutional support, we understand that there are no one-size fits all solutions to teaching in ever changing technological and social contexts. Also, and building on last year’s workshop, this year’s workshop will attend to the ways that teaching loads, expectations, terms, and more. are different in different regions of the world. For that reason the workshop will be discussion/conversation-based so we can all learn from and with one another. The main event will be held in-person in Dublin, with the workshop planned primarily as an in-person event, but virtual participation by some registrants can also be accommodated by connecting them to each other and the in-person conversation over Zoom. The hybrid plans will remain flexible as the nature of the COVID-19 pandemic and other variables may demand and will be announced closer to the event. This workshop will adhere to AoIR’s Statement of Principles and Statement of Inclusivity <https://aoir.org/diversity-and-inclusivity/>, which is a commitment to academic freedom, equality of opportunity, and human dignity. This means that in this workshop, just like in the rest of the AoIR conference, no harassment or discrimination will be permitted, and members must commit to the inclusion and recognition of all members. We appreciate the participants in this session arriving with a shared sense of purpose, community, and respect as we discuss teaching today.
