Different types of wireless LANs, both sub-6 GHz and in higher frequency bands, as well as such established technologies as Bluetooth LE, LTE-Direct, NFC, and optical links are the cornerstone of networking paradigms including NextG cellular, mesh and sensor networks, cloud networks, vehicular networks, non-terrestrial networks and in-body networks. The challenges of this exciting research field are numerous. These include providing robust services in highly dynamic and extreme environments, how to minimize energy demands or zero out battery usage in favor of renewable energy sources, how to smartly blend multiple wireless technologies available to a network node (including across radically different bands), and how to make wireless on-demand networks and services self-configurable, adaptive, self-organizing, and self-healing in a wealth of different context, each exhibiting its own peculiar constraints. IFIP WONS, now at its eighteenth edition, has established itself as a high quality forum to address the above and related challenges. WONS 2023 aims at continuing to provide a global platform for rich interactions between experts in their fields, discussing innovative contributions in a stimulating environment. This announcement solicits original contributions of high-quality research providing novel insights on all aspects of wireless on-demand networks and systems. MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION Authors are invited to submit double-column long papers (up to 8 pages) and short papers (up to 4 pages) as a PDF file using the standard IEEE template, with a font size no smaller than 10pt. Short papers should present future research directions and ongoing work with visionary, innovative ideas; accepted short papers will be presented in a separate session at the conference and will be included in the conference proceedings. Submitted papers must not have been published elsewhere and must not be currently under review by another conference or journal. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 independent experts in the field, following a single-blind process. REVIEW PROCESS We will have at least 3 reviews per paper and we count on the TPC members to do the reviews themselves in order to ensure high quality and comprehensive reviews. VENUE - HOTEL CARLO MAGNO The conference will be hosted at the Hotel Carlo Magno SPA & Resort located in Madonna di Campiglio, Trento, Italy. Therefore, depending on the situation during the conference time, remote participation and online presentation may be allowed under special circumstances. IEEE HPSR 2023 seeks tutorial proposals on new and emerging topics within the scope of the conference. Guideline for Tutorial Proposals The proposal should not exceed 4 one-column pages and must include: 1. Title 2. Name, affiliation, and a short biography of each tutorial speaker. 3. Abstract, objectives, and motivation. 4. Timeliness, duration (e.g., 1.5h; 3h) and intended audience. 5. A description of the technical issues that the tutorial will address, emphasizing its timeliness. 6. An outline of the tutorial content, including its tentative schedule. 7. Pre-required environment (e.g., Virtual machine, PC characteristics, AWS account, etc.) 8. If appropriate, a description of the past/relevant experience of the speaker(s) on the topic of the tutorial. Holly —— Just Can't Get Enough: Synth-Pop and Its Legacies Editors: Geoff Stahl, Nabeel Zuberi & Holly Kruse If one were to nominate a pivotal moment for synth-pop, 1978 is a strong contender: Kraftwerk switches on Die Mensch-Maschine; Gary Numan's group Tubeway Army and the Yellow Magic Orchestra release their debut albums; The Human League, Japan, The Normal (AKA Daniel Miller of Mute Records) and Telex release their first singles; two lads from Liverpool eschew their guitars for synths and a tape machine and form Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark; the group Berlin forms in Los Angeles, Duran Duran in Birmingham, and Soft Cell begins to record in Leeds. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the sound of synthesisers, sequencers and drum machines becomes an indelible part of the pop soundscape, manifested in music-making across the globe. Synth-pop is a loose rubric that includes DIY electronic music, post-punk and sounds shot through with the tropes of futurism and dystopia during the Cold War and early neoliberalism that Mark Fisher has called "the eerie.” Synth-pop also refers to melodic hits and chart toppers such as those by a-ha, Bronski Beat, The Buggles, Eurythmics, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears, Ultravox, Visage and Yazoo. This collection aims to cover synth-pop broadly defined, considering everything between its most rough-hewn and naive forms to its glossier, sophisticated incarnations. Along these lines, this collection aims to map out the distinctive synth-pop sound, its imagery and its global circuits, from its early experimental days to how its aesthetics have been recollected and refashioned in the decades since. We are particularly interested in contributions that counter synth-pop’s white, male hegemony and explore the genre beyond the Anglo/American axis. The purpose of this special issue is to highlight and celebrate that key part of HCR's mission (i.e., innovative theory development) on its 50th birthday both by taking stock and looking forward. As our field matures into a central discipline of academic scholarship, this special issue will not only highlight our theoretical contributions, but also gather the collective wisdom of scholars who are grappling with theory development and expansion. We live in tumultuous times that involve rapid technological changes, transformations in political discourse, evolutions in how we communicate interpersonally, and a greater appreciation of the importance of diversity and inclusion. As a result, the variables that we once found important may play different roles in our contemporary society, our models may need revision, new concepts await our exploration, and novel ways of understanding and explaining communication phenomena deserve our careful consideration. Authors are invited to submit proposals for papers that advance our theoretical understanding of communication. Rather than provide literature reviews, these proposals should focus on theory development that will offer a roadmap for scholars to enhance our understanding of communication in ways that are both cognizant of our changing communication landscapes and that are inclusive with regard to issues relevant to our global and diverse societies. We encourage theory papers focused on a variety of issues (e.g., media, health, interpersonal, political, intergroup, organizational, technology, critical cultural), and we welcome theoretical papers that may focus on methodological developments that have theoretical implications for advancing our field. Although the journal typically concentrates on empirical work, in this issue we are particularly interested in theoretical innovation. Dear colleagues, For a double special issue for the International Journal of Cultural Studies on “Global Perspectives on Platforms and Cultural Production” we invite abstracts for short reflection papers as well as long empirical papers. Abstracts should be submitted by November 6, 2022, and full papers by May 1, 2023. Bringing together research from around the world, this issue aims to revisit central concepts in the study of platforms and cultural production (e.g., precarity, diversity, public/private, agency, empowerment, authenticity, governance, modernization, Global South/Global North). The objective is to use this research as an opportunity for theory building. Rather than developing universalizing theories based on studies in the West, or replicating empirical cases across cultures, the idea is to diversify the geographies of theory. Understanding how platforms shape social and cultural relations, as well as how they employ data and algorithms in doing so, calls for new frames of reference.
