The role holder will work as part of a small team of Linux oriented software engineers in the DRI group of the Research IT unit in Trinity College IT Services. In addressing this question, contributions will help provide insight into a conflict that the US State Department (2021) has recently labelled the “most significant case of great-power competition in the 21st century”; a so-called "new Cold War" that has manifested across sectors ranging from resource extraction to telecommunications. Given their strategic role during and after the Cold War along with their histories of political conflict and economic disadvantage, nations within the Global South are key sites of economic and political conflict for larger states attempting to exercise economic and political influence. In the case of China, many pundits and academics (particularly in the US) have labelled its recent expansion into the Global South as "China's new age of imperialism" (French, 2014), arguing that it is using its economic and political strength to impose its will on "weaker" nations. In a similar vein, within communication and media studies critics have designated China's purported domination a form of “technological imperialism” (Greene and Triolo, 2021) wherein financial or technical support provides a wedge for commercial market domination and opens the door to increased cultural influence. Pushing against these dystopian views of Chinese globalization, others have argued that Chinese-oriented development portends a more egalitarian approach, particularly in the Global South. This expansion, in the words of political economist Giovanni Arrighi, offers "the promise of a global order based on economic interdependence but respectful to political and cultural differences" (Arrighi 2008, p. 379). Building on the trailblazing work of Yan (2020), Davis and Xiao (2021), and a scant few others, this proposed special issue will turn to media and communication processes in the Global South in an attempt to move beyond sweeping claims about the impact of Chinese globalization. In this vein, we welcome empirical investigations of how the Chinese state and Chinese media and technology corporations are expanding in Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America, and other parts of Southeast Asia. Contributors might address topics related to Chinese development initiatives in media or telecommunications infrastructure, cultural diplomacy and soft power, the expansion of Chinese-owned platforms, and other topics related to China's increasingly powerful role in telecommunications, ICT, news, and other media industries. Relatedly, contributions that deal with media responses to Chinese-led development are also welcome, including those that interrogate local responses such as heightened Sinophobia. Assistant or Associate Professor of Technical Communication & Rhetoric Texas Tech University's Technical Communication & Rhetoric program in the Department of English invites applications for an assistant or associate professor position in technical communication to begin August 2023. This is a 9-month appointment. We are especially interested in applicants who specialize in technical communication with research and teaching that focuses on web design, usability, user experience, interaction design, scientific writing, content/project management, editing, and/or grant writing. Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD in Technical Communication. Applicants with administrative experience, online teaching experience, and a record of scholarship supported by funding are strongly encouraged to apply. The School of Social and Policy Studies is composed of four departments: Communication, Labor Studies, Public Policy, and Sociology and is part of the Gordon Faculty of Social Sciences at Tel Aviv University. It combines research and teaching in a wide range of fields of social sciences. The school has a strong commitment to multidisciplinary research and teaching, and offers opportunities for interactions with many departments and research units on and off campus. It has a rich tradition of high-level, internationally recognized activities. The candidate must have a PhD degree or expect to be awarded a doctoral degree by October 2023, in communication or related fields, with a proven record of excellent research and publications. Post-doctoral experience is desirable. The position includes teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level (both existing and self-developed courses), supervision of graduate students, and pursuing high quality research based on grants received from competitive local and international foundations. Call for Papers This special issue of the *Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology* (*JASIST*), “Healthier Information Ecosystems,” will focus on the interconnected nature of online pathologies, draw attention to the socio-technical aspects of information technology, and animate interdisciplinary approaches to addressing these problems. Similar to Buckminster Fuller’s mission of “World Game,” we want to aid in developing a wide variety of solutions (including but not limited to technical, political, social, and educational) to the wicked problems of our time to make “the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest period of time… without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone.” We invite contributions that address the socio-cultural embeddedness of the problems plaguing information ecosystems and provide new ways of thinking about and strategies to achieve a healthier global information environment. We are actively seeking a broad approach to issues of healthier information ecosystems, including both theoretical and applied, qualitative and quantitative, as well as inside and outside the discipline of information science and technology. We are interested in transdisciplinary contributions that move beyond narrow, cross-sectional treatments of online phenomena to highlight the socio-technical dynamics of online spaces framed in cultural-historical contexts. Themes to Consider We are open to a wide variety of methodologies, including empirical, theoretical, and applied. We are also open to contributions that propose new approaches to exploring these issues and/or solutions from an interconnected information ecosystem perspective, but such papers should clearly explain how the proposed approaches will contribute to substantive solutions. We are eager to receive contributions from disciplines that might lend new perspectives, including (but not limited to) statistical physics, complex systems, biology, environmental science, economics, management science, organization science, communication, psychology, anthropology, sociology, and philosophy. All contributions should clarify how they can be used to help our information ecosystems work for the betterment of society at large, developing an inclusive and thus “healthy” ecosystem. Introduction to Guest Editors Josh Introne is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, USA, and director of the C4-Lab, which focuses on research at the intersection of complexity, cognition, communication, and computation. He studies the dynamics of misinformation and has partnered with industry and non-profit agencies to develop technology solutions for marginalized populations. jeintron(a)syr.edu Charisse L’Pree Corsbie-Massay is an Associate Professor of Communications at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, USA. Trained in social psychology and critical media studies, Charisse investigates how users think about themselves and others via media. clcorsbi(a)syr.edu Brian McKernan is a Research Assistant Professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, USA, and an expert in human-centered design, complex human reasoning, conspiracies and misinformation, the study of the cultures of online communities, and game studies. Brian conducts research and contributes to the development of tools to help monitor strategic communication by U.S. political actors on social media. bmckerna(a)syr.edu Deana Rohlinger is a Professor of Sociology, a Director of Research for the Institute of Politics, and an Associated Dean in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at Florida State University, USA. He has extensive experience in researching the configuration of information in contemporary society, the construction of trustworthiness, and media and information literacy practises in schools and everyday life.
