New research report by the Data Justice Lab: Civic Participation in the Datafied Society

Dear all, today the Data Justice Lab at Cardiff University is publishing a new research report on "Civic Participation in the Datafied Society". You can download it (pdf) here: https://datajusticelab.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/CivicParticipation_Da… The report addresses a key problem of datafication: Although data systems are rapidly rolled out in the public sector, there is little public knowledge about these developments, with few possibilities to intervene into, and participate in, decisions about datafication. How, then, do we advance people’s voice in the deployment of data and AI? How do we democratise datafied governance? In the report, we explore different ways in which citizens are – and can be - involved in these decisions which are fundamentally transforming societies. We investigate the roles of citizen juries and citizen summits, oversight and advisory institutions, civil society campaigns, alternative discourses and infrastructures, and efforts to advance data literacy, as well as the shortcomings of existing processes. While there is a lack of institutional procedures for meaningful participation, we found many promising practices and proposals that establish a more central role for citizens in decisionmaking over data. Our research shows that the democratisation of datafied governance is a key challenge for contemporary societies. The report provides a comprehensive set of findings from the 3-year research project "Towards Democratic Auditing: Civic Participation in the Scoring Society" which was funded by the Open Society Foundations and involved a wide range of interviews with experts and practitioners, observations of relevant practices, and fact-finding workshops. The Fairwork project invites you to attend the global Fairwork Summit: 'Fair Work on Digital Platforms' – September 14, 2022, 14.00 - 16.00 CEST Taking place online, and in partnership with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenrbeit (GIZ), the Summit will bring together leaders from academia, workers’ organisations, public policy, and the private sector to discuss the future of platform work. Hi all, In 2021 we (Zahra Stardust, Emily van der Nagel, Jiz Lee, Em Coombes, Mireille Miller-Young and I) put together and ran session on "Alternative Frameworks for Sexual Content Moderation" at RightsCon, several of you took part in it. After that we have been working on a Manifesto for Sex Positive Social Media (i.e. a social media that better understands sexual content, communication, expression and representation, a social media that is not exploitative yet punitive towards those for whom sex is an active (and public) part of their social and cultural life). After having consulted with many advocacy and activist organizations, reviewed and revised, we can finally share it. Workshop: Programming African Electronic Literature with simple code and code remix CALL FOR PAPERS (MADSEJ VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1) ABOUT THE JOURNAL Multilingual African Digital Semiotics and E-lit Journal (MADSEJ) is a multilingual scientific journal owned by African Electronic Literature Alliance & African Diasporic Electronic Literature (AELA & ADELI). It is a peer-reviewed, creative, technical and open access journal. MADSEJ is created in 2022 to enable African electronic literary works and digital arts get wider readership and visibility presence in the virtual wold-Internet and Metaverse. It concerns with the investigation into electronic and metaversal literary works, digital culture, heritage, semiotics created by Africans or/and in collaboration with Africans across the world. In other words, MADSEJ publishes only original researches and e-creative works mediated by social media, Internet and immersive storytelling platforms-Extended Reality (AR+VR+MR=XR). Therefore, MADSEJ accepts papers or digital arts that deal with the literary singularity intersected by technology such as Twitterature, Facebookature, Youtubature, Instagramature, TikTokature, Mobile and video Games, Blogfanfic, immersive and metaversal literatures. SUBMISSION This journal will begin its maiden edition with the papers accepted for the AELAIWC2022 conference. Papers are welcomed for the second edition which will possibly be published this year. All articles should have an abstract not more than 150 words. In a situation whereby the article is written in any official African language, the abstract should be either in French, in English or in Arabic vice versa. All articles should not be more than 16 A4 size pages, including tables, graphs, reference or webography, if need be. The presentation of the article should be double line spacing, Times New Roman, 12 points. All works cited are to comply with the MLA 9th edition format. Articles should be sent electronically to madsej(a)africanelit.org. MADSEJ's board of editors would get to the researchers/artists within 20 working days from the day of submission.
