When: Friday, Oct 14th at 1PM MST (20:00 UTC) Location: Zoom Registration Link: https://asu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwpd-yvrjkjEtLbI2H9DtiLKZ2aMVP0TKnA Who: Dr. Michael Simeone (ASU, Complex and Adaptive Systems) and Dr. Shawn Walker (ASU, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences) Talk Title: Parler and the Road to the Capitol Attack: Investigating Alt-Tech Ties to January 6 Abstract: The January 6, 2021 mob assault on the U.S. Capitol exposed deep fissures between Americans and shook the very foundations of the country. The violence that day and the tech industry’s response to the tsunami of polarizing content triggered a major public debate over how social media and tech companies manage their platforms and services and the impact of content moderation policies on polarization, extremism, and political violence in the United States. One big question is: How did niche social media sites geared toward far-right audiences, like Parler, contribute to polarization around the 2020 presidential election and to what extent did Parler and other platforms factor into the January 6 attack? Based, in part, on an early assessment of a cache of an estimated 183 million Parler posts publicly archived after Parler was temporarily deplatformed, we present an analysis that offers unique insights into online and offline early warning signs of the potential for election-related violence in the year-long run up to the Capitol attack. We also discuss the ethical and methodological challenges related to this work. He is also a Senior Research Fellow for the Future Frontlines program at the New America Foundation. His research uses tools like natural language processing and network modeling to understand organizations, communications, and cultural trends, especially disinformation and strategic influence. He also studies the specific contributions libraries can make to artificial intelligence models and intelligent systems. Simeone received his MS and PhD in English at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Illinois Informatics Institute at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Dr. Shawn Walker is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Arizona State University and a Senior Research Fellow for the Future Frontlines program at the New America Foundation. He received his PhD in Information Science from the University of Washington Information School. His research focuses on mis and disinformation and online resistance circulating in social media during social movements, protests, and elections as well as the related challenges of collecting, analyzing, and preserving data from social media platforms. BERKELEY CENTER ON COMPARATIVE EQUALITY & ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW 10th ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2023 Hosted by Utrecht University Utrecht, the Netherlands: 28-30 June 2023 CALL FOR PAPERS Equality Law in Context: Illuminating Intersections in Search for Global Justice The conference will provide a space for critical reflection on how to move equality law forward. The conference organizers particularly welcome submissions that seek to illuminate intersections between equality law and other fields of law as well as other disciplines (e.g. sociology, political theory, political economy, history, gender and queer studies, economics, etc) and/or intersectional inequalities (e.g. racism, sexism, class inequality, ableism, etc). There have been many calls to tackle deep-seated structural and intersectional discrimination in recent years, but so has the strong backlash against these campaigns. With these realities in mind, the conference will consider possibilities for crafting effective short-term and long-term responses. These responses will incorporate a global perspective. Paper proposals may address the broader themes described above or any area of equality and anti-discrimination law. Specific conference sub-themes are: * Multidisciplinary equality law * Effective mainstreaming and enforcement * Intersectionality and structural forms of discrimination * Covid-19 and inequality in times of crises * Opposition to equality projects * Digital equality * Disability rights * Racial justice * Gender equality * LGBTQI equality * Climate justice and just transitions * Financial equity and living wage * Sexual harassment and violence * Global systemic racism We plan to hold the conference on site in Utrecht. We will stream keynotes and make some of the recordings of the presentations available online. Instructions for submission We are now inviting submissions for workshop presentations and panels on topics related to these themes, and aspects of equality law more generally. We encourage applications from PhD/SJD candidates, postdoctoral fellows and individuals with significant practical experience of working to advance equality. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words and clearly indicate objectives and methodology. Please include a brief biography (max. 100 words, suitable for publication on the conference website), including affiliation and your email-address. Panel submissions should include a title and an abstract for the entire panel as well as titles, abstracts, and author information for all papers. Each panel should contain between three and four papers. The panel can be submitted by any of the authors. Please note that initial abstracts must be submitted in English, but we may be able to make some accommodation if you wish to present in another language at the conference. Please indicate this in your submission. Timeline * The deadline for the submission of abstracts is 15 November 2022. * The abstracts will be reviewed by the conference committee and invitations to present will be sent out in January 2023. * Either detailed outlines of the presentation, presentation slides or full papers will be due on 1 June 2023. We are looking for a highly motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer that will both conduct research in the context of two Horizon research projects on trust in science and effective science communication funded by the European Commission and teach in our undergraduate and graduate programmes in Media & Communication. The research projects are part of the Inspiring and Anchoring Trust in Science project (started in June 2022) and COALESCE (Coordinated Opportunities for Advanced Leadership and Engagement in Science Communication in Europe). Lecture duties will be focused on contributing to both our bachelor and master level courses in communication including the supervision of student theses in this area. CFP: ICA Preconference on the Legacies of Elihu Katz Elihu Katz (1926–2021) was a peerless scholar, colleague, mentor, administrator, and friend to many in the field of communication. His passing has left the field with an absence that calls out for remembrance and for scholarly consideration. This one-day, all-plenary preconference will create a space for scholarly exchange on Katz’s life, works, and themes—a forum, in other words, for active, critical engagement with his legacy for the field. The preconference invites presenters to explore, critique, and extend Katz’s contributions to communication scholarship. Some will situate Katz’s legacies in pertinent historical contexts; others will use his work to imagine media futures; still others will consider Katz’s many roles (teacher, institution-builder, broadcast pioneer, mentor). Some lines of inquiry presenters may wish to explore include, but are not limited to, the following topics: * considerations of journalism and the public that draw upon Katz’s configurations of Gabriel Tarde’s ideas * explorations of the promise and limitations of the idea of the media ritual * elaborations upon the idea of the two-step flow of media effects * diffusion processes in varied media and networks * the evolution and contemporary significance of the concept of media events * perspectives on Katz’s ideas that come from disparate subfields in communication, including but not limited to: interpersonal communication, organizational communication, and intercultural communication * philosophical interrogations of Katz’s ideas and research empirical studies that draw explicitly on Katz’s ideas, for instance cross-cultural readings of American television inspired by the Export of Meaning* (his co-authored book with Tamar-Liebes) * Shifts of emphasis in media studies between content providers and audiences * Katz’s place in the canon of media studies * new ideas concerning the Katzian intersection of mass communication and interpersonal communication * transpositions of Katz’s ideas into new arenas, like human-machine communication and virtual reality * historical scholarship addressing: * Katz’s involvement in broadcasting and mass media, including his role as a creator of Israeli Television * the export of Katz’s ideas to communication and media studies departments around the world * the impact of Katz’s ideas on academic fields and areas of practice outside of communication Abstracts of 400 words (maximum), in Spanish or English, should be submitted no later than 20 December 2022. Draft papers will be pre-circulated in advance of the preconference, with all participants expected to read in advance. It is imagined that if we find the right technology and deploy it in effective ways then previously intractable challenges might soon become a thing of the past. But what if digital education is part of the problem? To the extent it rests upon a continued proliferation of digital devices, ever expanding use of digital data and the embedding of ‘always on’ hyperconnectivity there are serious issues to be raised about the sustainability of digital education. Far from providing a route towards a fairer future the field risks exacerbating climate breakdown. Is it possible to reorientate digital education towards a more sustainable future or are these problems inherent in the digitalisation of education itself? Should we be trying to develop more sustainable forms of individual practice or are these distractions from political questions which need to be addressed collectively? After the first year, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to our core curriculum by developing advanced and graduate courses in their area of expertise. Our goal is to add courses to our curriculum to better cover the various areas of Media Arts beyond film and television. Minimum Qualifications - PhD in Media Studies or a comparable field.
