Dear AoiR friends and colleagues, Hope this email finds you well. The Pranava Institute <https://pranavainstitute.com/> is inviting contributions for its new blog on Unpacking Deceptive Design, which is part of The Ethical UI/UX design manual project <https://www.design.pranavainstitute.com/> funded by the University of Notre Dame and IBM’s Tech Ethics Lab. Deceptive design or ‘dark patterns’ are manipulative or deceptive practices built into user interfaces by developers that have the effect, intentionally or unintentionally, of obscuring, subverting, or impairing consumer autonomy, decision-making, or choice. They are often carefully designed to alter decision-making by users or trick users into actions they did not intend to take. These deceptive design practices are built into user interfaces across multiple online experiences today. Shopping and eCommerce platforms nudge and manipulate users to share more data and buy products, social media uses deceptive design to increase user engagement to unhealthy levels, and financial apps use deceptive design to trick users into signing up for products that could be harmful. The 'Unpacking Deceptive Design Blog' is a collaborative space for researchers and interested individuals to contribute from diverse disciplinary perspectives and fill knowledge and awareness gaps on the issue. The blog invites contributions reflecting on deceptive design practices as it intersects with competition in digital markets, data protection and privacy, consumer protection online, financial security, human rights, and social security across jurisdictions. We actively encourage contributions focussing on exploring deceptive design from non-western epistemologies, deceptive designs in non-western countries, and the impact on first-generation internet users. We are also happy to announce that contributions will be paid thanks to the support of the University of Notre Dame-IBM's Tech Ethics Lab. A standard honorarium of $200 will be offered to authors. How to contribute to the Unpacking Deceptive Design BlogWhat we publish - We invite contributions engaging various forms of impacts of deceptive design on society, including impact on users, data and privacy, competition, information online, consumer rights, vulnerable populations, digital markets, etc. - In particular, we appreciate articles exploring a specific dimension of such design choices or proposing how such practices can be countered. The blog should: - explicitly reflect on one or more aspects of deceptive design like impact on competition in e-commerce, impact on users and data, impact on youth online, etc. - explore alternatives to current practices either in design practice, or propose policy solutions, regulatory direction, consensus building, awareness, etc - be between 1,200 and 2000 words, blog style accessible to a wider audience. Longer posts might be published as a series of “episodes” linked to each other. Call For ICA 2023 Panelists: Platforms, Power and a Theory of Friction

Hi All, I’m co-organizing a panel for ICA 2023 that positions the removal and/or creation of friction through policy, design and business practices, as an orienting lens to understand platform capitalism and platform power. We are looking for two more panelists and are particularly interested in scholars who study labor surveillance, datafication, climate change and smart cities. Once you’ve read the abstract below, if you are interested, please email Pawel Popiel (ppopiel(a)asc.upenn.edu<mailto:ppopiel@asc.upenn.edu>) and Krishnan Vasudevan (kvasu(a)umd.edu<mailto:kvasu@umd.edu>) with a brief description of your paper and how your work would contribute to the understanding of friction. Abstract Technology platform companies, from Amazon to Uber, require the constant flow of user data to maximize profits and fuel their growth. The dependency of their business models on these uninterrupted data flows creates incentives for platform companies to remove any and all frictions that impede their accumulation of capital, including by facilitating user data surrender and obscuring data collection practices through user-friendly design and opposing policies that may regulate or disrupt these data flows. Communication scholars have begun to explore how technology platforms seek to maintain fluid marketplaces through such "frictionless" practices and strategies. For example, Popiel & Sang (2021) examined how platform companies lobby for "frictionless regulations" like public-private partnerships that naturalize platform business models, while privileging their business considerations over democratic values. Vasudevan (2020) examined how platforms employ "frictionless design" to addict end-users to platforms by deploying deceptive interactive features. In this panel, we build upon recent scholarship about friction and frictionless practices employed by technology platforms by examining the construct in the context of labor surveillance, datafication, platform regulation, and climate change. By situating “friction” within a more expansive theoretical context, this panel will offer scholars an adaptable, orienting construct for examining platform power. More broadly, this panel will provide scholars a meaningful lens through which to understand how platform capitalism in the current epoch seeks to erode socio-technical and political frictions that are crucial to a functioning democracy. ICA Panel CFP: Online LGBTQ Discourse + Rhetoric

Hello from Nanditha Narayanamoorthy and Yvonne Eadon, postdoctoral research scholars from the Center for Information, Technology and Public Life (CITAP) at UNC Chapel Hill. We are looking to convene a 6-paper panel for the LGBTQ Studies Interest Group at ICA 2023 in Toronto. The panel seeks to bring together papers that examine online discourses and rhetoric around LGBTQ+ communities on social media platforms from a variety of disciplines, methodologies, and cultural contexts. We invite papers that not only investigate the ways in which virtual queer communities converge and communicate online in the creation of personal and collective identities, but also how they are broadly represented on platforms through the rhetoric of violence, surveillance, conspiracy theories, and far-right nationalism. Emphasizing questions of power, discursive world-building, and social inequalities in relation to digital LGBTQIA+ communities, this panel seeks to foster conversation among scholars around the world by centering queer and trans communities, interrogating and broadening the extant narratives around online discourse on queer and trans experiences. We are particularly interested in papers that bring intersectional perspectives to the discursive study of sex, sexuality, gender, and intimacy using de/anti/postcolonial, and queer/trans/non-binary frameworks. Papers that take an intersectional and comparative approach from the Global North and South are particularly welcome. Digital Methods Winter School 2023 ’The use and misuse of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)’ 9-13 January 2023 New Media & Digital Culture Media Studies University of Amsterdam Turfdraagsterpad 9 1012 XT Amsterdam the Netherlands Call for participation The Digital Methods Initiative (DMI), Amsterdam, is holding its annual Winter School on ’The use and misuse of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT)’. The format is that of a (social media and web) data sprint, with tutorials as well as hands-on work for telling stories with data. There is also a programme of keynote speakers. It is intended for advanced Master's students, PhD candidates and motivated scholars who would like to work on (and complete) a digital methods project in an intensive workshop setting. The use and misuse of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) From geolocating burning tanks in the Ukrainian fields and determining the authenticity of videos depicting possible human rights violations in Cameroon to reconstructing the events of January 6, 2021 in the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., activists, journalists, and the general public are increasingly turning to a (somewhat) new ally: Open Source Intelligence (OSINT). The systematization of information gathered from open, often internet-based, sources (as opposed to the classified sources of governmental intelligence) using digital tools, as OSINT may be defined, is turning into a highly regarded strategy to build public narratives of truth. Recently, major news outlets such as The Guardian, The New York Times, and the BBC have added OSINT units or ‘visual investigation’ teams. They join more established investigation units from international civil society such as those of Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, academic research institutions such as Berkley's Human Rights Investigations Lab, and citizen intelligence agencies like Bellingcat. Recent news articles have described the rise of open source intelligence as challenging existing authorities, especially state-controlled or other official information sources. In doing so, OSINT practitioners have developed a particular set of reporting formats and verification tools that strengthen the epistemic authority of their practices. For example, crowd-sourced information from Twitter or Telegram is arranged next to video stills pulled from popular platforms or satellite images from public providers in order to put together and strengthen the argument of what actually happened. OSINT has developed a signature 'investigative aesthetic' and style, dramatised and popularised by organisations striving for justice, such as Forensic Architecture, or preserving the memory of wars, such as the Syrian Archive. OSINT also taps into the transparency strategies of the open source ethos and the encouragement of DIY hacker culture. Professional and lay OSINT practitioners curate lists of tools, draft how-to guides and share training materials on YouTube and elsewhere to empower others to undertake similar work. These have been applied to projects that fight climate change and trace illicit money flowing through circuitous corporate structures. They also have found an eager audience in those who dig for and post updates about conspiracy theories such as QAnon. Whether it is misuse or weaponisation, OSINT practices and styles have also been adopted by misinformation operatives such as 'War on Fakes'. The Winter School takes up OSINT as an investigative practice and aesthetic. It offers critical research projects on data journalism, fact-checking and other investigative projects employing online data. It also combines OSINT tools with digital methods and other online research techniques for academic research that make use of verification. Finally, it analyses its cultures of practice and how it establishes and undermines others' epistemic authority. At the Winter School there are the usual social media tool training tutorials for working on single and cross-platform analysis, but also continued attention to thinking through and proposing how to work critically with social media data, both from mainstream social media platforms as well as so-called alt tech. Apart from the keynotes and the training tutorials, there are also empirical and conceptual projects that participants work on. Projects from the past Summer and Winter Schools include: Detecting Conspiratorial Hermeneutics via Words & Images, Mapping the Fringe on Telegram; Greenwashing, in_authenticity & protest; Searching constructive/authentic posts in media comment sections, Mapping deepfakes with digital methods and visual analytics, “Go back to plebbit”: Mapping the platform antagonism between 4chan and Reddit, Profiling Bolsobots Networks, Infodemic cross-platform analysis, Post-Trump Information Ecology, Streams of Conspirational Folklore, and FilterTube: Investigating echo chambers, filter bubbles and polarization on YouTube. For my doctorate researched military adaptation of Information Operations to digital age challenges. Are social media influencers the journalists of today? What is it like to live in a smart city? Does AI really change ‘everything’?
