Dear everyone, The Cornell Social Media Lab of the Department of Communication at Cornell University is seeking a postdoctoral associate to work on the development of technologies and content for digital literacy interventions for older adults (ages 65+) as a part of a inter-university and interdisciplinary collaboration, aimed to equip people with the ability to recognize online deception and the motivations behind its various forms, and introduce them to ways to avoid and mitigate its harms. The ideal candidate will have training and experience at the intersection of educational technologies, gerontology, communication, and human-computer interaction. A strong background in quantitative and qualitative research, including methods of analysis and statistics is required. The anticipated start date is October 1, 2022. Social Innovation and AI Development in Europe | a WeNet Panel Discussion September 13 @ 6:00 pm Europe is increasingly investing in the development of Artificial Intelligence, with a global third place in the number of AI economic players behind the United States and China. Arguably, research in AI is the biggest driver of these developments, with over 3 billion Euros annual investment in Germany alone. Social innovation plays an increasingly important role in the AI landscape with the European Commission funding and promoting research and products that primarily aim at serving society. Social innovations in AI promise to (re)focus AI development on people instead of profits. For instance, the WeNet social media platform has been included in the EC Innovation Radar for responding to the various concerns with existing online systems for personal interaction. Yet, questions remain about the export of European technologies and values as a form of digital colonialism and the reinforcement of bias and discrimination in technology. These trends, drivers, and conflicts are subject to our panel discussion with a group of renowned computer scientists and researchers. We will ask and answer the following questions: * Where does Europe stand in terms of AI development vis à vis USA and China? Where do we want Europe to be? * Is social innovation unique to the European AI landscape? It does so by enabling music to expand the horizons of digital anthropology, demonstrating how the field can build interdisciplinary links to music and sound studies, digital/media studies, and science and technology studies. *Music and Digital Media* is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the digital assume clamouring audibility. The book contains ten chapters, eight of which present comprehensive original ethnographies; they are bookended by an authoritative introduction and a comparative postlude. Five chapters address popular, folk, art and crossover musics in the global South and North, including Kenya, Argentina, India, Canada and the UK. Three chapters bring the digital experimentally to the fore, presenting pioneering ethnographies of an extra-legal peer-to-peer site and the streaming platform Spotify, a series of prominent internet-mediated music genres, and the first ethnography of a global software package, the interactive music platform Max. The book is unique in bringing ethnographic research on popular, folk, art and crossover musics from the global North and South into a comparative framework on a large scale, and creates an innovative new paradigm for comparative anthropology. (Apologies for crossposting) Just wanted to draw your attention to a newly published book that explores the sociology and culture of sexual fantasies, HIV and health. The book is titled The Eroticising of HIV: Viral Fantasies and it's published in Palgrave's Health, Technology and Society collection. "The Eroticising of HIV" examines sexual fantasies and their influence on everyday life and culture through the stories of twenty-two men who introduce themselves as bugchasers, i.e. gay men who eroticize HIV. The book defines bugchasing, charts its history and contexts, and considers how it has changed in the age of internet and PrEP. Through the participants, their experiences and contexts, this text also theorizes about sexual fantasies, seeking to understand how people define sexual fantasies and use the internet as a space to navigate their desires, meet others, and find support. Chapters also consider the practical implications of fantasy, most notably, how fantasies influence men’s decisions around HIV prevention and care. This book speaks to renewed interest in both the AIDS crisis and the sociology of everyday life to illustrate how fantasies such as bugchasing appear, evolve, and adapt. This book will be of interest to scholars focused on queer studies, sexuality studies, gender studies, and healthcare. It Jaime García-Iglesias holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester, has a degree in English from the University of Oviedo (Spain) and in Cultural Studies from the University of Nottingham. He has held the prestigious Mildred Baxter Research Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh and has led large-scale projects on sexuality, health and internet use across the UK.
