Dear AoIRists, on behalf of my co-editors, Elisabetta Locatelli and aline shakti franzke, I am very pleased to call your attention to the following CfP (and with the usual apologies for the usual cross-postings) for a special issue of the journal Comunicazioni Sociali, to be published in September, 2023. (For more information on the Journal, please see below.) Internet Research Ethics in the Platform Society: Theoretical Reflections, Research Experiences, and Open Questions Edited by Charles M. Ess, aline franzke shakti, Elisabetta Locatelli Since the late 1990s, Internet Research Ethics (IRE) has emerged as a burgeoning field, fueled by an ever-growing variety of ethical challenges and concerns (Zimmer and Buchanan, 2016). To name but a few, questions include how to minimize risks for researchers and research subjects, and issues surrounding informed consent and intersecting interests between corporations and academic approaches: both emphasize the importance of the integrity of researcher but also add challenges to Ethics Committees, who aim to confirm what research can or cannot be conducted (franzke et al., 2020). In recent years, the societal and technological landscape has changed and expanded still again: platforms such as social media and apps aggregate a significant number of users, generating new social, cultural, and media practices to study. Research into these realms is stimulating and challenging but further implies methodological and ethical issues surrounding both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Both ethnographies and big data approaches in particular have different but compelling ethical issues to consider (Zimmer, Kinder-Kurlanda, 2017; Zook et al, 2017). Actually, there is the need to study and comprehend users' behaviors and their socio-cultural implications but users need to be more aware of what may happen to the data they posted and also about the research they are involved into. Moreover, the complex nature of AI technology and platform logics has evoked thunderous academic debates surrounding buzzwords such as fake news, and the importance of taking up misinformation, hate speech and ethical reflection in social media research is more compelling than ever before. In addition to these changes, the role and importance of internet research ethics has grown for over a decade and the approach of having it incorporated by design into the research projects is increasingly more common (Ibiricu, Van Der Made, 2020). For example, when participating in public grants and fundings such as Horizon Europe, the evaluation of the ethics of research is an aspect required from the very beginning also for social sciences and humanities. This entails a specific attention to privacy and developing a new attitude and best practices also for these disciplines, with consequences for how research projects are developed and carried out, including ethics assessments from its very beginning through its dissemination. Among the new challenges there is also the need of making research data open, requiring a further level of reflection. Considering this landscape, the present issue of Comunicazioni Sociali. Journal of Media, Performing Arts and Cultural Studies focuses on the new challenges of the ethics of social media and internet research through eliciting papers addressing theoretical reflections and research projects across the world especially related to social sciences, media studies, performing arts, and cultural studies. This topic is consistent with the tradition of the journal and its attention to the research on media and its context. The aim is to make a collection of research experiences as well as theoretical reflections that can serve as useful examples and references for the academic community. The call for papers invites submission of abstracts regarding the following topics of internet and social media research ethics; abstracts on other topics related to internet research ethics are also welcome: ● Informed consent; ● Possible harms to research subjects (especially when dealing with vulnerable subjects such as children, immigrants and people at the margins, and sensitive issues, such as gender and health); ● Potential harms vis-a-vis the safety and integrity of the researcher; ● Privacy and data protection with small data (e.g., ethnographies, interviews) and big data; ● The role of the research participants in the research project (e.g., considering them as active subjects, as in research with children or in research-action projects); ● Internet Research Ethics across countries (e.g., comparative studies, the role(s) of Ethics Review Boards, etc.); ● Ethics by design and the design of the research process; ● Dissemination of the research and open data. Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it is unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. CfP Youth migration, media and transnational education

Special issue with the Journal of Childhood and Adolescence Research **Youth migration, media and transnational education** Digital media plays a relevant role in transnational migration movements. Its uses have been analysed from different approaches, from managing family and keeping social relations from a distance (Madianou & Miller, 2012), to information seeking in the context of migrants fleeing war and conflict (Dekker et al., 2018) and political participation (Gil de Zúñiga et al., 2009). Apart from notable exceptions (Jayadeva, 2019), still little is known about the uses of media to fulfil transnational educational projects. But even beyond that, media use in migratory contexts remains a relevant topic of research. The communicative possibilities brought by "deep mediatisation" (Hepp, 2020) increase the pace and shape of information exchange. On this ground, new circumstances emerge. Social networking sites (SNS) are central, as they allow for quick and comparatively cheap exchanges. Furthermore, they provide a pool of available connections that can be activated through online interactions. In this way, they serve as a source of latent ties (Haythornthwaite, 2002) even for people who would not be otherwise involved in transnational social networks. SNS create other connection opportunities in migratory social networks, namely those established among unknown SNS users solely for information exchange purposes. Young people are particularly active on SNS and they are more likely to follow migratory projects associated with educational opportunities. This special issue contributes to investigating the use of media in such contexts from different perspectives. We are particularly interested in analyses that account for social inequalities and would provide insights into questions such as: What are the different uses of media among children and young people from different class backgrounds seeking educational opportunities abroad? What are the roles of race and gender in that intersection? What are the entanglements of digital labour and educational attainment among young migrants? How do educational institutions profit from or are affected by the information exchange and informal counselling on SNS among transnational mobile children and young people? Platforms, Cultural Consumption and Taste Formation (within the theme: Cultural Heritage and Identity – Creative industries, Media and Popular Culture) As cultural consumption increasingly occurs through online platforms that employ automated recommendation systems, there is an urgent need to understand how contemporary taste affinities and boundaries are cultivated and drawn through practices and styles of consumption. This project will examine taste formation through platforms (Tiktok, YouTube, Spotify, Netflix, etc.) and the implications for cultural identities, social cohesion and political polarization. 3. Media and Digital In- and Exclusion (within the theme: Communication, information and social inequalities in a digital world). Digitalisation and the ubiquity of online platforms offer opportunities for having better access to public services, being better informed and more participation in public debate and decision making processes. At the same time, there are major risks of digital exclusion; millions of citizens are not digitally literate enough to fully participate in a digital society. A fully funded PhD opportunity to research diaspora humanitarianism online The project is available for candidates who are willing to undertake research into how and why Australia-based migrant groups use social media platforms to organise and respond to humanitarian crises abroad. The successful candidate will join a growing interdisciplinary research team which is funded by the Australian Research Council. They will be situated within the interdisciplinary, research-intensive environment at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), within the College of Asia and the Pacific at The Australian National University. They will be supervised by - - Professor Alan Gamlen, Australian National University - - Professor Robert Ackland, Australian National University - - Dr Olga Boichak, University of Sydney Eligibility We invite applicants with a strong background in computational social sciences, digital humanities and/or data science. Essential criteria: - A first-class Honors or Master’s in a social science discipline, or equivalent background - Demonstrated technical skills in computational social science, regional studies, data analysis, or computer programming (with a strong preference for R or Python) Desirable criteria: - Competence in both qualitative, quantitative and/or computational research methods - Social media data collection and analysis skills (e.g. Natural Language Processing (NLP),text mining, network analysis) - Data visualisation skills, content analysis, corpus linguistics, humanitarian data analysis, population analytics, econometrics, social informatics, big data analysis, geospatial analysis, immersive analytics, interaction design, API programming, or machine learning/deep learning Expression of interest will close on Friday, 16th of September 2022. AoIR Best Dissertation Award 2022

We are pleased to announce the Best Dissertation Award for 2022 goes to Dr. Sebastián Lehuedè “Governing Data in Modernity/Coloniality: Astronomy Data in the Atacama Desert and the Struggle for Collective Autonomy.“ *Congratulations, Dr. Lehuedè!* Dr. Lehuedè’s dissertation is a fascinating study of astronomy data produced in one of the least light polluted sites in the world. The dissertation tackles the question of data governance in an inspiring and innovative way theoretically combining discourse theoretical approaches with sociological and anthropological perspectives. Dr. Lehuedè’s research shows the limits of Eurocentric concepts of open data and data sovereignty from the proposition of a collective autonomy of data, making thus an important contribution to the ongoing debates on postcolonial foundations of datafication and data governance. The Committee also recognizes Dr. Rebekah Larsen’s “Exploring Definitional Power in the Digital Age: A Case Study of Right to Be Forgotten Framing” and Dr. Karina Rider’s “Volunteering the Valley: Designing Technology for the Common Good in the San Francisco Bay Area“ with an Honorable Mention. Dr. Larsen’s dissertation provides a very timely study on internet governance, user data processing and control. The study is particularly interesting as it looks at the right to be forgotten as an “activist” tool for marginalized groups but also on the other hand how it serves as an exclusionary measure. The dissertation thus not only deals with many issues important in internet scholarship but has implications for policy debates along the North-South divide. Dr. Rider’s dissertation is excellent in demonstrating how “tech can save the world” reproduces itself as an ideology, epistemology, and belief. The disseration presents an exciting study of the emerging and important Technology for Public Good/Civic Technology movement and how it plays out in the hotbed of technology that is the Silicon Valley. The dissertation, thus, speaks to issues that are critical to both internet scholarship and the current public debate about technology, making an original contribution to digital justice and digital labor area.
