Decentralized Web Archives Research Findings (June 2, 12 EDT)

For the past 6 months New Design Congress [1] and Webrecorder [2] have been engaged in interviews with archivists and memory workers to help understand the benefits and potential harms of *decentralized* web archives [3]. They are sharing some preliminary results on their monthly call today from 12-1PM EDT [4], and I thought this might be a conversation that others in the AoIR might be interested in. Web archives, like the Internet Archive, British Library or PageFreezer, are typically institutional platforms which collect web content from elsewhere and present it for historical or evidentiary purposes. These platforms have their own practices, policies and procedures that shape what gets collected, how it is viewed, and how it gets removed. The Webrecorder project has been building browser based tools to allow users to create and and publish web archives, similar to other media types (images, audio, video). You can think of these archives as something like screenshots, but which afford more interaction while documenting the provenance of the content (the HTTP traffic is recorded, serialized and then played back on demand). Hopefully it will be an interesting conversation. Semi-structured digital records, like emails, and unstructured text, like social media posts, present a significant threat of privacy breaches. The enormity of data presents an uphill task to identify and mitigate private information on digital and social media platforms. While AI-powered privacy solutions are a welcomed step, it is only recently that researchers have focused on more human-centered and transdisciplinary (Polk, 2015) digital privacy solutions. Privacy protection is a legal and ethical responsibility of both public and private sector organizations, and AI development and deployment should account for the diversity of the target audience, the cultural contexts, and extant biases (Ehsan et al., 2021). Privacy solutions should not only be effective and accurate but also human-centered and accountable (Hepenstal et al., 2019). This minitrack aims to attract submissions on digital privacy solutions that bring different disciplines together, especially computer science, system sciences, information science, social science, and law. The focus of this minitrack is to bridge the gap between algorithmic development (automated decision-making systems, fair, accountable, and transparent systems) and human-centered approaches (usability studies, surveys, user interviews). We encourage submissions that address privacy concerns in digital and social media through inter- and trans-disciplinary approaches, including but not limited to AI and ML. Potential submissions for this minitrack should address (but are not limited to) the following research topics: - quantitative, qualitative, and computational studies on digital (e.g., images, webpages, emails, websites) and social media (e,g., Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, TikTok, Weibo) privacy; - qualitative studies using interviews, surveys, and usability studies to identify the privacy behavior of users (when using digital and social media); - quantitative work on digital privacy using statistical analysis; - machine and deep learning approaches to identify, classify, and mitigate sensitive and private information on digital and social media platforms; - novel privacy solutions using explainable AI, transparent ML algorithms, or any interdisciplinary methods. CFP: Workshop on cultural representations of machine vision - Bergen, 15-17 August

Call for submissions: CULTURAL REPRESENTATIONS OF MACHINE VISION: AN EXPERIMENTAL MIXED METHODS WORKSHOP Location: Bergen, Norway Workshop dates: 15-17 August 2022 Proposals due 15 June The ERC project Machine Vision in Everyday Life invites submissions to a workshop to be held at Solstrand Hotel near Bergen, Norway, on 15-17 August 2022. The workshop will combine qualitative close readings/case studies of machine vision in art, fiction, games and social media, with data analysis of the project’s dataset on machine vision in 500 creative works (see references below). WHO IS THIS FOR: The interdisciplinary workshop is for scholars at all levels from graduate students to full professors. We welcome participants from the humanities and social sciences as well as those with a background in data science or similar and an interest in interdisciplinary collaborations. The project will cover the cost of hotel and board for the workshop, and a limited number of travel stipends may be available. TOPIC As visual technologies are increasingly combined with machine learning to interpret and generate images, societies around the globe face practical and ethical questions about how these new possibilities should be evaluated, implemented and governed as they impact people’s everyday life. With their anticipatory and speculative potential, cultural representations of machine vision play a key role in answering these questions. Our premise is that cultural production – including literature, art, cinema, video games, science fiction, memes, fandom and more – is a rich source for understanding the impact of machine vision technologies on society, as well as their potential future trajectory. What can we learn from how machine vision is represented, applied and discussed in digital art, video games, novels, movies, TV-series, fan fiction, electronic literature, popular culture, social media content and other aesthetically or culturally expressive genres? QUALITATIVE INTERPRETATION AND/OR DATA ANALYSIS Seeking to experiment with mixed methods approaches, this workshop will ask participants to explore both qualitative interpretations and quantitative analyses of machine vision in art, games, narratives and more, based on the dataset Representations of Machine Vision Technologies in Artworks, Games and Narratives, which documents how machine vision is portrayed in 500 cultural works. The dataset is available as a set of .csv files and can be also browsed using a more human-friendly interface at http://machine-vision.no. Participants are invited to either present work-in-progress towards individually or co-authored papers on the topic of machine vision and its cultural representation, or to pitch and discuss strategies for analysing the dataset in collaboration with other workshop participants. In either case, workshop hours will be divided between short presentations, feedback sessions, and individual or collaborative data analysis and/or writing. The workshop has two goals: generating new research from the project’s dataset, and experiment with a mixed method approach to digital humanities data. A goal of the workshop is to develop research that combines qualitative methods with data science and data analysis, and to strengthen interactions between researchers using different methods. The workshop will be held at Solstrand Hotel, with delicious meals, beautiful fjord views, plenty of nooks and crannies for writing and group work, and indoor and outdoor bathing opportunities. Participants will be invited to submit papers developed in the workshop to a special journal issue that is currently under development. What happens when your home office starts to feel like a call center and you’re too tired to close down Facebook? “How to get rid of your phone? Wrong answers only.” We wanted to use the pandemic to reset and move on. We failed. The comfort of the same old proved too strong. Instead of a radical techno-imagination focused on rolling out alternatives, we got distracted by fake news, cancel culture, and cyber warfare. Condemned to doom scrolling, we suffered through a never-ending barrage of cringy memes, bizarre conspiracy theories, and pandemic stats, including the inevitable flame wars surrounding them. Random is fun. “We admitted we were powerless—that our lives had become unmanageable.” This confession is Step 1 in AA’s 12 steps, and it is here that Stuck on the Platform also begins. As you and I are not able to resolve platform dependency, we remain glued to the same old channels, furious at others about our own inability to change. In this seventh volume of my chronicles, we’re staying with the trouble called the internet, diagnosing our current phase of stagnation while also asking how to get “unstuck” and deplatform the platforms. What happens to the psycho-cultural condition when there’s nowhere to go and users are trapped in too-big-to-fail IT firms? It’s not pretty. While some believe that our persistent resentment, complaints, and anger are merely part of the human condition, totally unrelated to the shape and size of the information ecology, others (like me) are convinced that we have to take the mental poverty of the online billions seriously. We can no longer ignore the depression, anger, and despair, pretending they will be gone overnight after installing another app. Addiction is real, buried deep inside the body. Habits need to be unlearned, awareness needs to spread. All the while Godot just sits there, staring at the screen, waiting in the lobby for some policy change to be announced. Yet nothing ever happens. The resulting fallback and fatalism comes as no surprise. “What do you do when your world starts to fall apart?” Anna Tsing asks at the very beginning of The Mushroom at the End of the World. It seems we have our answer: we stick to the platform.

Castro, Advanced School of Advertising and Marketing (ESPM), São Paulo, Brazil Luiz Peres-Neto, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain Sergio Amadeu da Silveira, Federal University of ABC, Brazil Digital platforms have emerged as a new means of production in the wider global economy by extracting, circulating and controlling vast amounts of data as an economic, social and political asset. The metaphorical term ‘platform’ describes an infrastructure that enables two or more groups to interact, combining big data, cloud and mobile telephony together as an increasingly competitive weapon. Platforms have transformed global promotional industries, which include advertising, branding, marketing, sponsorship and public relations. Moreover, the production logics of platformisation have given rise to new promotional occupations such as digital content marketing, ecommerce, programmatic advertising, social media management and user experience (UX) design, to name a few. While the impact of digital platformisation has been at the forefront of various interdisciplinary debates, there has to date been limited attempt to understand the collective impact of platformisation and algorithmic logics on the global promotional industries. More than quarter of a century ago, the Birmingham School gave us the Circuit of Culture as a way to think about production, consumption and representation in the cultural economy. The model helped in apprehending the promotional fields as representational activity, situated between production and consumption, and responsible for circulating products and services as well as ideas. As digital platforms speed up distribution processes, bringing producers and consumers together in increasingly ‘frictionless’ ways, the gaps between many forms of digital production and consumption are closing. In the platform economy, promotional outputs (e.g. advertisement, branded content or sponsored video) are no longer bounded by time, while the media through which promotional outputs circulate now operates more logistically and algorithmically than it does narratively or representationally, as digital content attracts and organises users, places and things across time and space. How then should we understand promotional activity in the digital age? We welcome contributions that consider any of the following questions: 1. How should we understand digital platforms and their relationship with promotional industries, their workers, their inputs and outputs? Here we acknowledge that some platforms such as Amazon, Facebook and Google are themselves promotional entities, numbering among the largest advertising companies in the world. 2. What are the implications of recent technological developments such as shoppable TV, preparations for Facebook’s metaverse, or the prospective demise of third party cookies? 3. Who are the new promotional intermediaries? What is the future for traditional promotional roles? How are traditional promotional roles positioned against emerging specialisms such as data insight, content strategy, social media management or user experience design? 4. To what extent do contemporary promotional devices, tools and outputs represent new approaches? Contributions might explore anything from conversion funnels to in-house technology stacks, from analytics to tracking tools, from mobile apps to promotional bots and virtual brand influencers. 5. Are there local, regional alternatives to programmatic networks controlled by major platforms that belong to groups such as Alphabet or Meta? Does the current supremacy of Big Techs eliminate the value of national advertising markets and render them hostage to these North American technological giants? 6. The platform economy is intertwined with massive extraction of data. Machine learning and deep learning technologies also depend on data storage. Theories such as spectacularization, control societies, surveillance capitalism or data driven economy attempt to cover the phenomena of conversion of life flows into data. What are the concepts and theories that allow us to better deepen our analyses of promotional industries and platformised logics in the digital age? 7. Finally, how and where can we gauge the changes within promotional industries empirically and theoretically, especially when much of promotional activity is opaque or difficult to trace? In addition to the questions posed above, contributors might also consider the following topics for article development, including but not limited to: 1. AR/VR interfaces 2. The IEEE ISC2 2022 Organizing Committee is glad to announce that it is currently accepting papers for the 8th edition of the IEEE International Smart Cities Conference. This year, the IEEE ISC2 will be held in-person on September 26-29, 2022, in Paphos, Cyprus and the theme of the conference is “Community Smartification and towards ZERO emission Smart Cities for a Green New Era.” The IEEE ISC2 is the flagship conference sponsored by the IEEE Smart Cities Technical Community, a coalition of eight IEEE technical societies and organizations. Besides contributions addressing the conference theme, authors are welcome to submit their original research results in traditional topics across broad application and functional domains, within the context of smart urban infrastructure systems. Paper Submission Guidelines Prospective authors are invited to submit high quality original (Full or Short) papers via the EasyChair submission site at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=isc22022 . Full papers should describe novel research contributions with evaluation results and are limited to seven (7) pages. Short papers, limited in length to four (4) pages, should be more visionary in nature and are meant to discuss new challenges and visions, highlight early research results, and explore novel research directions. All submitted papers must be unpublished and not considered elsewhere for publication, should be written in English and formatted according to the IEEE Template ( https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html ). Each submitted paper will pass through the standard IEEE peer-review process. If accepted and presented at the conference, it will appear in the conference proceedings and be submitted for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. The conference organisers are currently negotiating a number of special issues with high quality journals.
