Please note our extended deadline: 15 July OxBAT 2022 [Oxford Blockchain, Art & Technology Conference] Blockchain Art and NFTs: Spreading the Wings of Encounter Call for Papers NFTs represent the democratic ideals of blockchain technology and its introduction of a system based on decentralised power while the blockchain itself offers an additional novel medium for blockchain-native art. However, the recent explosion of NFTs has led to much controversy in public, ranging from admiration to astonishment and condemnation, and the intensity of the industry’s commercial success has eclipsed its aesthetic, creative and social potential. The inaugural Oxford Blockchain, Art, and Technology (OxBAT) conference will be held on 26–28 September, 2022 at the University of Oxford. As the first multi-disciplinary conference on the aesthetic, social, and philosophical perspective on blockchain art, it will bring together art historians, artists, social scientists, curators, blockchain developers, and more in an open forum. The focus will be on encouraging interaction and networking between those interested in studying or working in this space. We are currently seeking submissions for proposed talks from any of the aforementioned fields. We will accept submissions from anyone with or without an academic/institutional affiliation as long as academic standards are met, as the aim of the conference is to bring together researchers and industry professionals. We welcome critical perspectives on blockchain technology and NFTs. At the same time, it provides a basis for quantitative assessment of the political situation in the World. Event extraction has long been a challenge for the natural language processing (NLP) community as it requires sophisticated methods for detection and classification of events: machine learning, syntactic and semantic parsing, event ontologies, event co-reference resolution, acquisition of language resources, grammar learning, terminology learning, temporal and spatial reasoning, and other algorithmic approaches (Pustojevsky et al. 2003; Boroş, 2018; Chen et al. 2021). Social and political scientists have been working to create socio-political event (SPE) databases such as ACLED, EMBERS, GDELT, ICEWS, MMAD, PHOENIX, POLDEM, SPEED, TERRIER, and UCDP following similar steps for decades. These projects and the new ones increasingly rely on machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and NLP methods to deal better with the vast amount and variety of data in this domain (Hürriyetoğlu et al. 2020). Automation offers scholars not only the opportunity to improve existing practices, but also to vastly expand the scope of data that can be collected and studied, thus potentially opening up new research frontiers within the field of SPEs, such as politically-motivated violence and social movements. Automated approaches, however, suffer from major issues like bias, generalizability, class imbalance, training data limitations, and ethical issues that have the potential to affect the results and their use drastically (Lau and Baldwin 2020; Bhatia et al. 2020; Chang et al. 2019). SPEs are varied and nuanced. Both the political context and the local language used may affect whether and how they are reported. Therefore, all steps of information collection (event definition, language resources, and manual or algorithmic steps) may need to be constantly updated, leading to a series of challenging questions: Do events related to minority groups are represented well? Are new types of events covered? Are the event definitions and their operationalization comparable across systems? This workshop aims at finding answers to these questions as well. Inspiring innovative technological and scientific solutions for tackling these issues and quantifying the quality of the results. Task Overview ================================================ The task consists of four subtasks relevant to Event Causality Identification: Subtask 1: Document classification ⇒ Does a news article contain information about a past or ongoing event? Subtask 2: Sentence classification ⇒ Does a sentence contain information about a past or ongoing event? Subtask 3: Event sentence coreference identification ⇒ Which event sentences (subtask 2) are about the same event? Subtask 4: Event extraction ⇒ What is the event trigger and what are its arguments? Participants may design mono- or multilingual solutions that work on a single, multiple, or all subtasks concurrently. Participants are also allowed to combine annotations for either task. Additional datasets can be utilized for training or validation purposes. The systems developed for one or more of these subtasks will be invited to process a news archive to measure the correlation between automatically and manually created event datasets. This task will be referred as Task 2. Please see Guigni et al. (2021) for the similar task we performed last year. Data ================================================ Training data: The training data we use for the Task 1 is the training data for CASE-2021 and consists of English, Portuguese, and Spanish news articles. Please find the detailed description of the data on Hürriyetoğlu et al. (2021), https://aclanthology.org/2021.case-1.11.pdf. Test data: There will be two test sets for Subtask 1. These are i) test data from CASE 2021, which is already available, and ii) new test data for CASE 2022 including new data both in existing and in new languages, e.g. Japanese, Urdu, Mandarin, and Turkish. The test data for subtasks 2, 3, and 4 will be the same as CASE 2021 test data for subtasks 2, 3, and 4 respectively. Evaluation ================================================ The F1-macro score on predictions for test data in each language will be calculated separately for Subtasks 1 and 2. The subtask 2 will be evaluated using F1-macro. Subtask 3 will be evaluated using scorch - a python implementation of CoNLL-2012 average score for the test data ( https://github.com/LoicGrobol/scorch) Finally, we will use CoNLL-03 evaluation script (https://github.com/sighsmile/conlleval) for subtask 4. The new test data for subtask 1 may be utilized to improve performance on these subtasks. The evaluation will be managed on a Codalab page. Participants will submit their scores and the highest performing submission will be used for ranking teams. There will be a limit on the number of submissions that can be performed. From travel bans on an international level, national lockdowns, accessibility and availability of public places, vaccines and testing, to the spread of disinformation, social media censorship, and discussions on corporate responsibility have led to new types of social division and exclusion in society. These inconsistencies and the different narratives on Covid-19 have been met with diverse responses from individuals, governments, justice systems and the private sector. While some countries cite the ending of the pandemic, others have tightened regulation and introduced punitive measures for non-compliance with transient measures. These in turn have created pockets of individuals and larger collectives to engage in "Covid non-conformities". Recent studies refer to such incentives as `Covid fraud`, cultures of resistance, pandemic disobedience, or corruption of medical professionals, while others identify online criminal networks, that are assisting counterfeiting national Covid regulations and health care markets. However, due to the growing uncertainties and controversial decision-making practices, deviant responses are increasing in all corners of societies. In this special issue such non-conformities are defined from a greater scope as actions, images, initiatives, vernacular, or behaviour, that defy, challenge, or draw into question Covid-19 measures imposed on the local or the international level and which are met with dissenting response. Covid-nonconformities go beyond solely (il)legal conduct, but also include professional and moral deviance. In this special issue we invite contributions that examine the dynamics of deviance and the widening of what constitutes Covid non-conformity, to be published in the Autumn of 2022. We welcome innovative and original research representing interdisciplinary objectives, including cultural, critical theoretical approaches which identify these fault lines in society, as well as the responses to them. Contributions presenting qualitative or empirical inquiries seeking to describe and explore Covid non-conformities are highly encouraged, as well as multidisciplinary research from criminology, criminal justice, media and communication studies, anthropology, sociology, and other humanities disciplines. 2022 Nancy Baym Book Award Winner

We are excited to announce Catherine Knight-Steele's Digital Black Feminism as the 2022 AoIR Nancy Baym Book Award winner. *Digital Black Feminism* reclaims feminism for Black women and directly intervenes in Internet scholarship. The book is historically informed, considering how Black women have forged forms of resilience -- including through engagements with technology -- prior to the Internet age. It then shifts focus to more contemporary practices, developing provocative metaphors such as the "virtual beauty shop" and devices such as putting contemporary Black feminists on Twitter in conversation with historical figures. Knight-Steele also considers Black influencer cultures and the dangers of commodification of Black women's lives. This book is deeply tied to to AoIR scholarship and pushes our intellectual community forward. Committee members were effusive in their praise for this book. "*Digital Black Feminism* offers an exceptionally liberating perspective in which democratic rights are enhanced by the wide opportunities of the Internet," says Arantxa Vizcaino Verdu. "This book expresses in an innovative and deeply personal voice a unique identity that today concerns women worldwide". Robert Tynes adds, "*Digital Black Feminism* is what we hope for in Internet studies--excellent scholarship, innovative analysis, and salient vision, based on the most dire issues of today." Regarding the dire issues of today, the committee made this selection before the recent retrenchment of reproductive and privacy rights in the United States. We know that Black women in the US and around the world have suffered and been marginalized throughout modernity. The end of abortion access in the US is only a further exacerbation of this marginalization -- Black women's reproductive autonomy in many parts of the world was already highly curtailed before the US Supreme Court decision. Now, many poor women, especially Black women, will suffer even more, not just for lack of access to abortion, but through enhanced surveillance and even more precarious access to healthcare. Enter a book like this. As Knight-Steele writes, "Black women consistently do the *radical* work of calling for the US to make right its promise of democracy.... It is time for the left to understand that the future of politics is women of color." Part of this future needs to be learning from Black women's innovations in the cultural practices of digital media. That can be part of AoIR's future, too. While the committee has strongly endorsed *Digital Black Feminism* as the winner, this was by no means an easy decision. The pool of books submitted for consideration was deep, filled with excellent scholarship relevant to Internet research. It was the committee's privilege to read them. Call For Papers: “New Formations of Game Genre,” Edited Anthology Game Studies has adopted a notion of genre that overcomes the “tension between ‘ludology’ and ‘narratology’... [by] conceptualizing video games as operating in the interplay between these two taxonomies of genre” (Apperley 2006). That is, the consensus of the field is that game genres are a combination of both narrative and other forms of representation (e.g. Adventure, Western, or Sci-Fi stories and/or motifs) and formal, ludic structures (e.g cooperative or competitive, role-playing, shooting, platforming). While game studies as a field seemed to quickly embrace consensus around Apperley’s definition of genre, the Approaches to Digital Game Studies series introduction (Voorhees, Call, and Whitlock 2012) maintained a more fluid and promiscuous line: game genres could be distinguished by their theme or representational qualities, rules and mechanics, function, or some combination of the above. However, the ideological effects of the ludology vs. narratology debate are pervasive and game genres are still understood as constellations of formal and representational properties. Despite making allowances for iconography, structure, and use as distinct and not necessarily overlapping ways of distinguishing game genres, most conversations about genre and videogames are still wedded to the representational and mechanical dimensions. Meanwhile, outside of genre studies, game studies has experienced a cultural turn in the last decade, centering the social dimensions of games and play. What resources for theorizing game genres emerge from this cultural turn? How might the critical theories of race and culture, intersectional feminism, queer theory, post-colonial and decolonial approaches, and mad/crip interventions of the past decade suggest new ways of thinking about game genres? And what new and emergent genres can be identified from this side of this cultural turn? Put differently, what would the study of game genres look like today if the ludology vs. narratology debate never occurred? Or if it had taken some form more productive than it ultimately did? How might we understand game genres without the mandate to think about them through the two axes of “representation” and “ergodicity?” For this volume, tentatively titled “New Formations of Game Genre,” to be submitted for publication in the Approaches to Digital Game Studies book series published by Bloomsbury Academic, the editors aim to assemble scholarship that advances two lines of inquiry and thus seek proposal for essays that speak to one or more of the following two areas: 1. Minor forms and new genres that have been overlooked and understudied. Not every set of games warrants a monograph or even anthology like digital role-playing games, first-person shooters, or even Japanese role-playing games. But there are still lessons to be gained from giving space to looter-shooters, rhythm based or deck-building role-playing games, and/or text-based rouge-lites. We are seeking proposals for chapters that explore the various dimensions of these minor and emerging forms. 1. Genres that are distinguished by their social use. Lauren Berlant (2011) describes genre as a set of expectations that organizes a subject’s relationship to their historical circumstances. Closer to home, TreaAndrea Russworm, Bo Ruberg, and Chris Patterson, respectively, ask us to think about what constitutes a Black game, a queer game, and an Asian game, not as a product of the thematic or mechanical aspects but rather – beyond representation – as distinct structures of feeling, patterns of embodied experiences, and/or sets of material practices. We are seeking proposals for chapters that further explore how game genres can be distinguished by their social function, and how they work to mediate players’ relationships to the material world. About the Editors: Gerald Voorhees is an Associate Professor in the Department Communication Arts at the University of Waterloo and President of the Canadian Game Studies Association. He researches games and new media as sites for the construction and contestation of identity and culture, and he has edited books on masculinities in games, feminism in play, role-playing games, and first-person shooter games. Gerald is co-editor of Bloomsbury’s Approaches to Game Studies book series and was managing editor of the Gender in Play trilogy in Palgrave’s Games in Context book series. Josh Call is a Professor of English and Director of the Writing Program at Grand View University. His current research focuses on critiques of games and media as political and ideological expressions of culture and power, and has edited collections on role-playing games, and first-person shooter games. Josh is the co-editor of Bloomsbury’s Approaches to Game Studies book series. Betsy Brey is a PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo in the Department of English Language and Literature. She researches narrative and queerness in video games. Her work examines the social and cultural practices of the communities that play or enjoy these games, including questions of collaboration, digital labour, canonicity, and the cultural economies of fans and fandoms. Matthew Wysocki is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at Flagler College and an Area Co-Chair of Game Studies at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association. Much of his research revolves around questions of control and player agency especially with regard to sex and romance. Matthew is the editor of CTRL-ALT-PLAY: Essays on Control in Video Games and co-editor of Rated M for Mature: Sex and Sexuality in Video Games.
