Annette will present a framework for building 'moodboarding as a method' for critical pedagogy and participatory engagement. The workshop proceeds in five parts: 1. Professor Annette Markham will launch the workshop with a talk introducing the idea and premises of 'moodboarding as a method for transgressing smart city data'. 2. Participants will then work with visual and textural materials in the space to visualise 'moods', based on facilitator prompts. 3. Participants move into small teams to create a visual and sensory 'moodboard' of their current and imagined future city. 4. Participants will discuss the challenges and value of the exercise, as well as moodboarding or other creative layering, as a form of data production, citizen social science, or city engagement. 5. Participants will then open the workshop doors from 19:00 to 20:00 to showcase the resulting moodboards in the style of a gallery opening, and where a sound artist will be invited to add another interpretive sonic layer to the moodboards. 'In the Mood – Moodboarding as a Method' is presented by RMIT Europe, RMIT PlaceLab, and Digital Ethnography Research Centre, and held as part of the New European Bauhaus Festival and Barcelona Design Week ’22. Social media have become one of the main channels to inform, interact with, and mobilize citizens. As a result, the use of communication channels, communication styles, and contents as well as organizational structures of parties and movements themselves have changed. Visual content—like memes or videos—has become more important. New political actors like populist parties, social movements, or so-called new civics have entered the political stage in many countries around the world. Micro-targeting, inauthentic user behavior, and the automation of the distribution of political messages influence how citizens perceive politics. Our thematic issue closes research gaps by inviting studies focusing on the role of social media in political and societal mobilization by established political actors such as parties and politicians but also social movements and new civics. Therefore, it focuses on the goal-directed use of platforms, contents, and mechanisms of distribution, including the strengths and possibilities of digital campaigns. However, it does not ignore the risks and dangers by also inviting works on mobilization by means of the intentional spreading of false information, conspiracy narratives, or the dysfunctionalities of algorithms and mismanagement by platforms. The thematic issue aims at contributing to a broader scientific understanding of the political implications of digitalization for political and societal mobilization and insights into how digital instruments could promote or hinder democratic development. Submissions might address (but are not limited to) the following questions: * Which mobilization strategies do different political actors and/or movements use, and which differences and similarities can be identified between different countries and political strands? * (How) do mobilization efforts of social movements and political parties complement or substitute each other? * How do left- and right-wing online activism differ (from other forms of online activism, e.g., that of centrist actors and/or green parties and movements)? * How does (micro-targeted) online advertising influence citizens’ willingness to participate in political processes? * Under which circumstances does “hashtag activism” become impactful? * Under which circumstances does online activism lead to “slacktivism” and when and how is it more impactful? Dear colleagues, Come work with us - We have two new postdoc positions available at our Center at Aarhus University in Denmark – application deadline is 20 June 2022 23:59 CEST: Two postdoc positions in computational analysis of social media and collective behaviour DATALAB – Center for Digital Social Research at the Department of Media and Journalism Studies within the School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in computational analysis of social media communication and collective behaviour. The first postdoc position is affiliated with the research project NORDIS funded by the EU Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), and the second postdoc position is affiliated with SHAPE - Shaping Digital Democracy funded by Aarhus University. Postdoc profiles We are looking for applicants who have growth mindsets and documented experience in computational analysis of human data (preferably social media, but this is not a requirement) with the purpose of investigating human collective behaviour. Furthermore, we are ideally looking for applicants who have advanced skills in Python and classifiers from related fields and at least documented experience with Python and applied machine learning (preferably deep learning and/or NLP models such as BERT or LDA). Experience with API data collection, hidden Markov models (or other change point detection models for postdoc 2), network and time series analysis is not a requirement but would be positively evaluated. The successful applicant will be expected to co-author (with other DATALAB researchers) at least two highly ranked journal articles, one as first author, in the areas of detecting and analysing reactions to fact-checked disinformation on the Ukrainian war in selected EU countries, detecting and analysing super spreaders and potential influence operations across the Nordic countries, the EU and the US (postdoc 1), as well as change point detection and other dynamics of civic collective behaviour on social media (postdoc 2). The successful applicants will be working within an interdisciplinary group of researchers from other fields such as media, information and communication studies, cognitive semiotics, neuroscience and sociology, and your main tasks will be to write articles, process data (in a distributed setting using high-performance computing), qualify the choice of and advance the mathematical models (for example machine learning) and apply relevant statistical analysis. Dear Colleagues, Today on the CaMP anthropology blog, Florian Jaton discusses his book, The Constitution of Algorithms. https://campanthropology.org Best, Ilana A laboratory study that investigates how algorithms come into existence. Algorithms—often associated with the terms *big data*, *machine learning*, or *artificial intelligence*—underlie the technologies we use every day, and disputes over the consequences, actual or potential, of new algorithms arise regularly. In this book, Florian Jaton offers a new way to study computerized methods, providing an account of where algorithms come from and how they are constituted, investigating the practical activities by which algorithms are progressively assembled rather than what they may suggest or require once they are assembled. Drawing on a four-year ethnographic study of a computer science laboratory that specialized in digital image processing, Jaton illuminates the invisible processes that are behind the development of algorithms. Tracing what he terms a set of intertwining courses of actions sharing common finalities, he describes the practical activity of creating algorithms through the lenses of *ground-truthing*, *programming*, and *formulating*. He first presents the building of ground truths, referential repositories that form the material basis for algorithms. Then, after considering programming's resistance to ethnographic scrutiny, he describes programming courses of action he attended at the laboratory. Finally, he offers an account of courses of action that successfully formulated some of the relationships among the data of a ground-truth database, revealing the links between ground-truthing, programming, and formulating activities—entangled processes that lead to the shaping of algorithms. In practice, ground-truthing, programming, and formulating form a whirlwind process, an emergent and intertwined agency.

Throughout the week, events will be exploring key issues and debates concerning the impact of digital technologies on society, politics, methods, games, arts and the environment.
