The first IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC) was held in 1995 in response to the growing interaction between the fields of computers and communications. ISCC takes place annually, usually in the Mediterranean region, in locations such as Egypt, Greece, France, Tunisia, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Italy, and Brazil. In 2022, the Symposium is going to be held in Rhodes, Greece. ISCC sessions will include presentations on new research results and tutorials. Papers describing original work are invited in any of the computer and communications areas that the Call for Papers considers. Accepted papers will be included in the ISCC 2022 Conference Proceedings, which will be subject to independent peer-review procedures for quality, and may be eligible for inclusion in the IEEE Xplore(r) Digital Library. Merit, relevance, and originality will guide paper acceptance. Best Paper Award and Best Student Paper Awards will be presented. ISCC 2022, in its 27th edition, will provide an insight into the unique world stemming from the interaction between the fields of computers and communications. Social good is typically defined as something that provides a benefit to the general public. They must be original works and must not have been previously published. At least one of the authors of all accepted papers must register and present the work at the conference; otherwise, the paper will not be published in the proceedings. All accepted and presented papers will be included in the conference proceedings published in the ACM Digital Library. Dear Colleagues, We invite you to submit to the Data for Policy 2022<https://dataforpolicy.org/data-for-policy-2022/> special track on Citizen-generated Data for Policy, Innovation, and Democratic Participation<https://dataforpolicy.org/special-track-6/>. The conference will use a hybrid format with in-person sessions held in three locations: Hong Kong (5th Dec), Seattle (9th Dec) and Brussels (13th Dec). The deadline for submissions is 1st June 2022. Session Overview: Data innovations are having a growing effect on the participation of citizens in both political and non-political issues of public concern around the world. Initiatives to engage citizens through data platforms and systems are having an impact on numerous sectors, such as science, public health, humanitarian interventions, activism, and much more. At the same time, countries are beginning to develop policies that affect these systems, covering issues such as cybersecurity, data protection and privacy, and artificial intelligence. As we have observed in this regulatory process globally, citizens are not always at the centre of these policy processes, often competing with diverging national and corporate interests. Citizen science is a way for citizens to engage with and learn about scientific processes, contribute to issues they care about, and effect change. Engagements commonly occur both in person – e.g. through environmental monitoring – or online. Crowdsourcing is a technique used both within citizen science and innovation, allowing either volunteers or paid crowd-workers to engage in activities such as data categorisation, often for later use in machine learning algorithms. Open source projects in many fields use similar approaches, including collaborative projects such as Open Street Maps or Wikipedia, where groups of users with specific interests contribute to achieving common goals. What all of these activities share is that citizens generate contribute or process data. The motivation for this proposed track is therefore to allow researchers to highlight citizens' uses of data innovations, with the hope of placing citizens at the centre of future policy-making initiatives. The track aims to discuss challenges and opportunities in developing data platforms, systems and policies for civic participation, including for participation in global development processes, democratic participation and inclusion of marginalised communities. The aim of this special track is to explore and showcase the full potential of citizen-generated data in its many forms, for both policy and innovation. We will go into more depth on the specific challenges related to the generation, processing and use of citizen-generated data for policy and innovation; connections between policymakers, innovators, and citizens to enable the use of such data; and case studies of both successful and unsuccessful connections. Possible topics might include (but not be limited to): * Consultations and monitoring for regional or global development (such as the Sustainable Development Goals); * Civic participation in democratic governance and other decision-making processes; * Citizen-centric data governance frameworks (such as data trusts, data commons, and data collaboratives); * Citizen science or participatory research; * Citizen generated data for innovation; * Citizen perspectives on emerging data and technology policy challenges (such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc.); * Tensions between grassroots data collection and monitoring and high-level engagement and policy; * Perspectives on the above in relation to gender, age, ethnicity, or migration. Hi all, Along with my colleagues Amelia Acker and Andrew Iliadis, I invite you to submit to the HICSS 56 Digital Social Media minitrack panel on Critical and Ethical Studies of Digital and Social Media: https://hicss.hawaii.edu/tracks-56/digital-and-social-media/#critical-and-e… This minitrack focuses on two themes: a) research that critically interrogates how and when digital and social media reify existing power structures or realign power for underrepresented or marginalized groups, and b) research that addresses ethical issues associated with doing research on digital and social media. The minitrack seeks both conceptual and empirical approaches to these two themes. Conceptual papers should address foundational scholarship and theories —e.g., important interventions for thinking about information exchange in communities and societies, key ideas, paradigms, and methods. Empirical papers should draw on original studies of digital and social media that illustrate the critical or ethical dimensions of digital infrastructures, social media platforms, or data use. Potential paper topics could explore the following topics and themes: - studies of the perpetuation of gender, race, ethno-nationalist, and faith-based hostility and bullying found in a range of online environments; - studies of the values and worldviews embedded within specific hardware and software technologies; - studies that look at the political economies and labor conditions of digital content creation, digital work, and the consequences of sharing economy platforms; - studies that look at mediated representations and practices of political community; - studies that examine digital power relations between individuals, collectives, and societal institutions. - case studies that grapple with the challenges and opportunities of unequal data access among digital and social media researchers (e.g., APIs, open vs. proprietary data); - studies that explore the situated ethics of social media research in different digital contexts - studies of the environmental impact that digital and social media researchers have on the planet by using and reusing data and metadata stored in resource-intensive ways; - studies of academic collaborations with actors that are a focus of controversies (e.g., military units, immigration enforcement officials, lobbying groups); - studies that mobilize non-traditional or experimental research methods developed for the specificities of digital and social media. Since then, it has expanded internationally, and its members have organized larger conferences in Paris (2019), Toronto (2019), Milan (2020, online), and Edinburgh (2021, online). INDL's next conference will take place on November 3-5, 2022 in Athens and will be the first in-person meeting since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The network encourages the participation of researchers in all academic stages and from any part of the world. Call for submissions The concept of digital labor is central to the digital transformation of society. New jobs like online freelancing, gig-work, and remote crowdwork are made possible by digital intermediaries. Under the impetus of work from home, conventional jobs have changed to teleconferencing and have introduced algorithmic management. Despite the pervasiveness of this phenomenon, the notion of digital labor remains elusive. Different disciplines and fields in the social and economic sciences, political theory, law, and philosophy have attempted to capture the attributes of labor in the digital age. These academic endeavors take place against the backdrop of the rise of platformization of work and the introduction of new activities that produce data and meanings for large sociotechnical systems. Thus, digital labor not only necessitates the transformation of the traditional concepts and methodologies we employ to study this essential human activity but also calls for a new understanding of labor relations to overcome the looming threats of unfair remuneration, job instability, harsh working conditions, lack of social grounding and, very often, self-alienation. This conference aims to map these new working environments by connecting different disciplines and fostering dialogue around the nature of digital work, as well as the possible futures that academic research may help bring about.
