Request for Proposals — Bid on ACM IUI 2023 (deadline extended) --------------------------------------------------------------- Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI) is the premier conference series sponsored by ACM (SIGCHI and SIGAI) and has been held annually since 1993 as the principal international forum for reporting outstanding research and development on intelligent user interfaces. To involve the greater IUI community in conference organization and better plan for the conference, we request proposals for hosting and organizing IUI two years ahead of time. We regularly rotate the conference locations to engage with IUI research communities around the globe. Below shows the location and time of the three most recently scheduled IUI conferences: IUI 2020 Cagliari, Italy March 17-20 IUI 2021 College Station, Texas April 13-17 IUI 2022 Helsinki, Finland March 22-26 Why host IUI? There are several benefits of hosting and organizing an IUI conference. First, conference hosts/organizers have an opportunity to publicize their work, build relationships, and interact with the international IUI community. Second, this is a great opportunity for the organizers/hosts to introduce their students and colleagues to the IUI community and help grow the community as a whole. Third, hosts/organizers can use the opportunity to build local IUI communities, connecting representatives from both academia and industries. Bid Requirements All proposals must be written in English with a readable font not smaller than 12 point and margins not less than one inch on all sides. The proposal should address each aspect outlined below but not exceed 15000 characters (approx. 5-6 pages). Based on the merits of the proposals and factors such as ensuring a diversity of conference locations, the board will choose the top candidates and then a finalist will be chosen and announced at IUI 2021. Please note that the bid requirements have been modified from previous years. Please read the requirements below carefully before writing up your bid. Hosts/Organizers The conference hosts/organizers should have knowledge of the IUI community, such as having attended and published regularly at IUI, and have experience with conference organization. One of the main IUI goals is to bring together people from diverse backgrounds. For that reason, the bid proposal must suggest ONLY the conference general chairs. The IUI steering committee will work with the selected bid proposers on building the conference organizing team. We especially encourage that the key conference organizers consist of people from both industry and academia, representing both AI and HCI since the work presented at IUI is at the intersection of these disciplines. Please include short bios of the proposed conference general chair(s). Location Since IUI is an international forum, we expect that attendees will travel from different parts of the world to the conference location. It is important that the proposed location is conveniently located for all attendees to reach by available means of transportation. Time IUI conferences have been held at various times during late winter through early spring, most typically in March though earlier times will be considered. Your bid should include a proposed time with key dates (e.g., paper submission and notification). The choice of time should also take into account the weather conditions of the proposed location to avoid potential weather-caused travel delays and potential conflicts with other conferences and their submission deadlines. Virtual Attendance and the Impact of COVID-19 We hope that by the time of the 2023 conference that it will be possible to hold a physical conference similar to those held before 2020. Organizers should still prepare for decreased attendance and to offer virtual participation options for those who may not yet be comfortable traveling long distances. Conference Venue Please describe the proposed conference venue, including the following aspects: * Capacity. In recent years, IUI has typically had around 250 attendees, though IUI 2018 had a record high of over 350 participants and IUI 2019 had a similar number. No conference has been held since COVID, however current ACM recommendations are to anticipate a 30-40% decrease in attendance in the near term. IUI has typically taken place over four days, the first of which consists of workshops and tutorials hosted in parallel separate rooms (10-20 people). To encourage interaction among the attendees, during the main conference, it is also desirable to have additional space at the venue to put up IUI posters for the attendees to visit during coffee breaks. * Facilities. The venue should provide basic conference facilities, such as high speed internet access that can support the participants in parallel effectively and LCD projectors. * Location. The venue should be centrally located for attendees to reach quickly by ground transportation and have access to other amenities (e.g., restaurants). * Accessibility. The venue should be accessible to attendees with disabilities. * Reception and poster session dinner. Traditionally, IUI opens with a welcome reception on the night before the 1st day of the conference. The first night of the conference features a dinner reception with the poster and demo session. The location(s) of the receptions are not required to be co-located with the venue, however the location criterion above should still be used to minimize the travel for the attendees. * Social event. Traditionally, IUI has a social event + dinner on the second day of the main conference * Special events. Traditionally, during the conference the “test of time” paper award is given to the most influential IUI paper, which is accompanied by a plenary talk session for its authors. TiiS papers published in the last year are also integrated into the technical program, there is a “town hall meeting” where IUI community issues are discussed, and there is IUI steering committee lunch with current and upcoming conference and program chairs. These events need to be considered while planning the conference Accommodation Most attendees will need accommodation during the conference period. One of the responsibilities of the conference hosts/organizers is to locate and reserve a bulk of affordable lodging for attendees. Please describe the proposed accommodation options, including the price range of the hotel rooms and the distance to the main venue. Provisionary Budget Plan The proposal should also include a provisional budget, outlining the cost of major items, including the rental of the conference venue, cost/per person for the reception and banquet, and the estimated conference registration fee. Please consider including meals for participants in the budget, especially if there are limited food options near the conference venue. Important Dates Jan 29, 2021 (Extended): Bids are due. +++ apologies for cross-postings +++ The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) and the Centre for Fertility and Health in Oslo are jointly offering one PhD student position in economic demography. The PhD candidate will spend most of their time in Rostock, Germany, but also regularly travel to Oslo. At the MPIDR, the position will be based in the Research Group Labor Demography<https://www.demogr.mpg.de/en/research_6120/labor_demography_4733/>. Topic The PhD candidate will study the social, demographic and health consequences of technology-induced job loss. This endeavor can help to better prepare for and identify contexts and policies that mitigate adverse social and health effects of technology-induced job loss. The project includes examining the consequences of technology-induced displacement, both on individual workers and the wider society, such as families and regions. Within this broad topic, the candidate will have the opportunity to develop their own research agenda and collaborate throughout and beyond the MPIDR. Potential data sets to be used include Norwegian population registries which contain information on occupation, education, cognitive test performance, health, intergenerational relations as well as physiological and mental health trajectories. Additional, alternative data sources include register-based data from other countries, as well as large-scale survey data. Successful candidates will be expected to have the following qualifications: * background in economics, demography, medicine, statistics, epidemiology social sciences or other relevant fields, * good oral and written presentation skills in English. * Experience with data processing and statistics, as well as analysis of large data sets is an advantage. * Competence in relevant statistics programs such as R or STATA is an advantage. * Being results-oriented and having the ability to work independently. * Being innovative, flexible, with great working capacity and teamwork skills. MPIDR is one of the leading demographic centers in the world. It is part of the Max Planck Society, a network of 86 institutes that form Germany’s premier basic-research organization. Max Planck Institutes have an established record of world-class, foundational research in the sciences, technology, social sciences and the humanities. They offer a unique environment that combines the best aspects of an academic setting and a research laboratory. The admitted student will be expected to take part in the International Max Planck Research School for Population, Health and Data Science (IMPRS-PHDS), a training initiative hosted at MPIDR that merges demography, epidemiology and data science. The IMPRS-PHDS school equips doctoral students not only with advanced knowledge of the theory and methods of demography and epidemiology (broadly defined as ‘population health’), but also with strong technical skills in statistics, mathematical modeling, and computational and data management methods (broadly referred to as ‘data science’). Possible dissertation topics are not limited to health, but cover all areas of demographic research, including mortality, fertility, migration, mathematical and social demography, as well as the impact of population aging on changing life courses, intergenerational transfers, and economic activity within populations. PHDS supports strong interdisciplinary research training and exchange within a network of universities in Europe and the US. The research school offers a core training program in Rostock, extensive networking opportunities across partner sites, and high-quality supervision across at least two institutes. Free Webinar - Challenges and possibilities of visual methodologies in researching housing/home

The University of East Anglia's School of Education and Lifelong Learning will be hosting a free webinar on Monday, December 14, at 13:00 PM · UK time that may be of interest to colleagues. Have you ever thought of using the power of the visual as a methodological tool? Visual methods have long been mobilised in the social sciences, but they are still under-represented compared to more traditional methods such as interviews, focus groups or surveys. In this presentation I focus on a particular strand of visual-elicitation, participant-generated photo- elicitation. This method of in-depth interviewing relies on participants talking about photographs they have taken themselves. Reflecting on two recent projects on the housing experiences of low-income private tenants in the UK, I will shows that the method delivers a deeper and different knowledge by empowering participants to talk about what is important to them, by breaking taken-for-granted understanding, and by stimulating reflexivity. Finally, by allowing us to enter in participants’ home located miles away, it inspired us to develop a new theorization of home as assemblage. The webinar will be presented by Dr Adriana Mihaela Soaita, a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow. Dr Soaita's research has focused on some of the ways in which housing and home are permeated by, and shape our ideas of, politics and power, trust and governance, space and place, emotions and embodiment. Podcasting and Popular Music’ Guest editors: Ellis Jones (University of Oslo) and Jeremy Morris (University of Wisconsin-Madison) Abstracts due: 20th January 2021 On 19 May 2020, Spotify announced they had secured worldwide rights to distribute The Joe Rogan Show – arguably the world’s most commercially successful podcast – exclusively through their streaming platform. This move, reportedly worth over $100m, follows a series of notable licensing deals and acquisitions by Spotify (e.g. Gimlet Media, Anchor, The Obamas, etc.). But the heavy investment in this emerging media format also puts podcasts and music in economic and cultural tension. Noting the paltry royalties Spotify distributes to musicians, jazz historian Ted Gioja scoffed that the Rogan deal shows ‘Spotify values Rogan more than any musician in the history of the world.’ So, while academic literature has positioned podcasts in relation to radio as the format they most resemble, outside of academia it is music and podcasts that are more frequently presented as in competition for listeners’ attention, and as generating different listening practices and distinct sets of socio-cultural values. This special issue of The Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast & Audio Media (20.1, May 2022) seeks to put these two competing and complementary formats in dialogue. Topics for articles might include: * Music and podcasts as participatory media. As a ‘home recording’ project, podcasting has potential parallels with the long history of ‘DIY’ and ‘alternative’ music production. What is the significance of being a ‘home’ podcaster, in relation to these politicised lineages of music production? * Identity and political ‘voice’. Podcasts are accessible and ubiquitous, but some early structural features that made it a popular practice for white, educated men still persist. Who can speak through these different forms? How do music and spoken word give voice to different communities, and particular forms of expertise? * Functions and uses. Recorded music and podcasts are distinct formats, yet they occupy similar roles in people’s lives: soundtracking commutes, chores, exercise, etc. How do music and podcasts compare as forms of ‘time’ or ‘mood’ management’? * Music, podcasts, and well-being. How do music and podcasts provide similar or different experiences of comfort, immersion or distraction? Why are podcasts (more than music) categorized as habitual listening, or as addictive binge-listening? * Platformization. What are the consequences of Spotify’s moves away from the open ecosystem podcasting was built on, and what can popular music learn from such changes? What is the relationship of music and podcasts to corporate surveillance and data capture? How has platformization placed pressures on the form, content, and structure of music and podcasts? * Music in podcasts. Podcasts have not (yet) integrated the playback and publicizing of popular music in the same way that radio has, largely due to licensing issues. How might this change in the streaming era? How have licencing issues led to other uses of music in podcasts? How have musicians used podcasts to build audiences and develop alternative revenues amidst a purported ‘value gap’ in music streaming?
