Hello all Many of us are currently facing challenges as we seek to carry out qualitative research which addresses inequalities under socially distanced conditions. Lots of people are thinking creatively about how to overcome these challenges, and we’re aware of a number of events, webinars and discussions on this topic that have taken place. We are gathering together resources on this topic (including recordings of webinars, if available), which we will share publicly on our Living With Data <https://livingwithdata.org/> project website in August. We will include general resources about doing qualitative research in socially distant times (such as Doing fieldwork in a pandemic <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1clGjGABB2h2qbduTgfqribHmog9B6P0NvMgVuiH…>), but we are especially interested in resources relating to inequalities research, covering, for example, researching with marginalised, minoritised or hard-to-reach groups and communities, or facilitating qualitative research with diverse groups (including diversity in groups, eg in relation to race, class, culture, language, lived experience, politics, accessibility). Inquiries into memory modalities in digital media ecologies” Digital media ecologies open-up publics for articulations of people and groups beyond the established institutions. They promise to break with traditional knowledge hierarchies by providing new modes of participation and publicness. However, participatory memory making for people and groups in vulnerable social situations did not emerge by itself through the re-mediation of memories, which emerges from digitalization with its particular capacity for representing, sharing and sustaining knowledge (including emotional, practical and tacit knowing). Being aware of the fact that culture may cultivate integrative or disruptive forces, establishing inclusive politics of heritage for envisioning possible futures has become a key issue in memory making. Building on the rich knowledge on participation in memory making, we thus want to move on and explore the wide array of modalities, in which mediated memories contribute to opening-up established knowledge orders in public memory. This panel invites contributions on how memory modalities open-up established knowledge orders and foster social inclusive, future envisioning memory making. We seek to discover and inquire which organisational settings, discourses, business models and finances, cultural economies, legal frameworks or potential other modalities facilitate accessibility, agency and motivation of people and groups to partake in public memory making. Being part of the public memory is important for envisioning positive possible futures acknowledging people’s and groups’ history, identity, belonging, and membership, in questions of eligibility for public support or redemption, for partaking in economic outcomes or questions of ownership of cultural heritage resources. The goal of the tutorials is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (emails above), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of tutorials, including but not limited to: - "Hands-on" or "project-centric" tutorials around a specific problem or topic. - Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. Tutorials will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of proposals for half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) tutorials. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the tutorial chairs. We encourage you to consider virtual and semi-virtual options for the tutorial in the submission. The organizers of accepted tutorials are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Tutorial organizers are also required to set up their own website with information about the tutorial and the IUI 2021 web site will refer to this website. PROPOSAL FORMAT Tutorial proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions at https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template. Please either use the Word interim template with Libertine fonts downloaded and embedded, or the LaTex sigconf template. The proposals should be organized as follows: - Name and title: A one-word acronym and a full title. - Description of tutorial topic: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to IUI and its interest for the IUI2021 audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the tutorial is of particular interest. - Organizer(s): Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the organizer(s). Provide a brief description of the background of the organiser(s). We are now accepting applications for the 2021-23 cohort and are looking for researchers from diverse disciplines and backgrounds advocating for digital rights. The Fellows program is a great opportunity for researchers to inform our policy advocacy work and to engage with policy-makers in the US and EU. What CDT offers to Fellows: * CDT commits to providing a platform for publishing relevant fellows’ work, as well as providing regular updates on key tech and internet policy developments. * Fellows are invited to attend certain CDT-branded public events and webinars, including our Annual Dinner, Tech Prom, as guests of CDT. * Throughout the fellowship, CDT Fellows will have the opportunity to engage with our team, and to provide feedback and suggestions on policy positions, white papers, research, and other outputs. The workshops will produce a report for NSF defining the key research goals for broadband in the United States for the next five or so years, while also reflecting on earlier research accomplishments and gaps. The workshop series will consist of three workshops, each with a different main theme: *Broadband Technology*, *Broadband Economics* and *Digital Inclusion*. Each of these three workshops will take place over two afternoons (U.S. Eastern Time), via videoconference. Abstract: This SoLAR webinar, led by Journal of Learning Analytics (JLA) editors Simon Knight, Xavier Ochoa and Alyssa Wise invites the community to engage with the complex question of what constitutes "rigorous research" in learning analytics (LA). LA is a highly interdisciplinary field drawing on machine-learning techniques and statistical analysis, as well as qualitative approaches, and the papers submitted to and published by JLA are diverse. While this breadth of work and orientations to LA are enormous assets to the field, they also create challenges for defining and applying common standards of rigour across multiple disciplinary norms. Extending the conversation begun in the 2019 editorial of JLA 6(3), this session will examine (a) indicators of quality that are significant in particular research traditions, (b) indicators of quality that are common across them, and (c) indicators of quality that are distinctive to the field of LA as a confluence of research traditions. This session will comprise brief presentations from 6 expert panellists in the field followed by a lively discussion among them with Q & A. This webinar will lay a foundation for future participatory sessions inviting conversation across the community more broadly. Chairs Alyssa Wise is Associate Professor of Learning Sciences and Educational Technology at New York University and the Director of LEARN, NYU's pioneering university-wide Learning Analytics Research Network. She holds a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences and an M.S. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and a B.S. in Chemistry from Yale University. Dr. Wise's research is situated at the intersection of learning and educational data sciences, focusing on the design of learning analytics systems that are theoretically grounded, computationally robust, and pedagogically useful for informing teaching and learning. Dr. Wise serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Learning Analytics is a Co-Editor of the Handbook of Learning Analytics. Xavier Ochoa is Assistant Professor of Learning Analytics in the Department of Administration, Leadership, and Technology of the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. He is also a member of the Learning Analytics Research Network (LEARN) at NYU. Xavier holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Leuven (Belgium), an M.Sc. in Applied Computer Science Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussels (Belgium) and a B.S. in Computer Science from Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (Ecuador). Simon Knight is a senior lecturer in the University of Technology Sydney, Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. Panellists Perspectives on Rigor in Statistical Approaches to Learning Analytics Research Sandra Milligan is Director and Enterprise Professor at the Assessment Research Centre at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research areas include assessment, micro-credentialing and using big data to support assessment of higher-order learning skills. Philip Winne is Distinguished Professor of Educational Psychology and former Canada Research Chair in Self-Regulated Learning and Learning Technologies at Simon Fraser University, Canada. His research interests include self regulated learning, metacognition, motivation and use of adaptive software to promote self regulation. Perspectives on Rigor in Computational Approaches to Learning Analytics Research Dragan Gašević is Professor of Learning Analytics in the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University, Australia and former President of Society for Learning Analytics Research. His research interests include developing computational methods that can advance understanding of information seeking, sense-making, and self-regulated and social learning. Jelena Jovanović is Associate Professor in the Department of Software Engineering, University of Belgrade, Serbia. Her research interests include the use of statistical / machine learning methods and techniques, semantic technologies, and other computational approaches that combine human and machine intelligence to improve understanding of the learning process. Perspectives on Rigor in Qualitative Approaches to Learning Analytics Research Kristine Lund is a Research Engineer in the Human and Social Sciences and the vice-director of the Language Sciences laboratory Interactions, Corpus, Learning and Representations at the University of Lyon, France. Dr. Lund's research interests include the multimodal co-construction of complex knowledge in goal-oriented computer-mediated human interaction and interactive phenomena such as explanation and argumentation in problem solving situations. Bodong Chen is Associate Professor in Learning Technologies and the Bonnie Westby Huebner Endowed Chair in Education & Technology at the University of Minnesota. He is also the co-director of Learning Informatics Lab of the College of Education and Human Development. His research interests include the study of computer supported collaborative learning, online learning, knowledge analytics and network analytics.
