The Department of Public & Applied Humanities at the University of Arizona is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The top candidate will be able to contribute expertise, leadership, and imagination to the department’s efforts to theorize and prefigure responses to the future of the human being. Candidates for the position should be highly collaborative, exploratory, and hardworking, with a humanities-oriented and publicly engaged research specialization in one or more of the following areas: the environment (natural or built), health (epidemiological, dis/ability-related, and/or societal), technology (digital, analog, biological), narrative knowledge (place-based, embodied, digital), or similar cross-cutting and emergent research areas, including areas related to the curricular emphases of the BA in Applied Humanities. Dr Alexander Ketchum, McGill University, is leading this series and it includes talks that many people here are likely to be interested in joining. I was pleased to contribute to the series with a talk yesterday on digital (un)sustainability. For more information about the series, here is an excerpt from their website: The Feminist and Accessible Publishing, Communications, and Technologies Speaker and Workshop Series seeks to bring together scholars, creators, and people in industry working at the intersections of digital humanities, computer science, feminist studies, disability studies, communications studies, LGBTQ studies, history, and critical race theory. The series will bring forward critical approaches to publishing practices, innovative communication strategies, and techniques for making research dissemination more accessible. Part of the motivation of this series is that while humanities scholars will critique "traditional" academic publishing and communications strategies as being sexist, classist, racially biased, and inaccessible, the kinds of solutions proffered (such as open access, such as "innovative new technologies," etc) often romanticize and fetishize technological alternatives and do not look at how inequity can be perpetuated or only shifted (especially at the level of algorithms!). The technologies behind open access scholarship, self-publishing, website design, and other communicative technologies that humanities and social science scholars use as alternatives to traditional academic publishing in order to communicate with the public are not neutral. It is vital that humanities and social science scholars engage with computer scientists and engineers if we seek to truly expand accessibility and create ways of communicating our scholarship in a socially just and feminist way. The Feminist and Accessible Publishing, Communications, and Technologies Speaker and Workshop Series of 2019, 2020, and 2021 is timely as Montreal grows into “the world’s leading Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning Hub.” Samsung, Facebook, Google Brain, Element AI, and Microsoft all have or are developing AI campuses within the city. In 2017, the Forum on the Socially Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence unveiled the Montreal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence. It is important that humanities and social science scholars enter into these conversations as AI and machine learning undergirds the kinds of technologies we utilize as we seek to make publication and information distribution more accessible. This series includes speakers from across Canada and the United States. Over the course of the year, there will be guest lectures, discussion sections, and practical workshops covering topics such as discrimination in algorithms, open access, data set design, feminist bookstores, podcasting, and website design. In order to make the series as accessible as possible, lectures will be livestreamed and recorded when possible. Dear all, Dr Crystal Abidin, Prof Michael Keane, and the Centre for Culture and Technology at Curtin University <https://ccat.curtin.edu.au/> invite submissions to a virtual symposium on Cultures of TikTok in the Asia Pacific. This event will be a critical forum for cutting edge research on TikTok, the globally influential short video platform that has captivated international attention and made headlines over the past two years. In particular, this event focuses on the cultures of TikTok (including but not limited to the platform, players, and politics) throughout the Asia Pacific Region. Contributions to this symposium will help pioneer research methodologies for studying TikTok and create further resources for curriculum development and future research. This half-day virtual symposium will take place via Zoom on 7 December 2020 featuring presentations from contributors and a keynote delivered by Associate Professor Haiqing Yu (RMIT). Each contributing speaker will have approximately 15 minutes (10 minutes to present, 5 minutes for Q&A). We invite submissions from researchers working in the Humanities and Social Sciences, including but not limited to in Internet Studies, Media Studies, Communication, Sociology, Anthropology, Theatre, Screen and Digital Media, Cultural Studies, and Journalism. Valenti School of Communication at the University of Houston invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position to teach courses in media production beginning in Fall of 2021. The candidate will need to have demonstrated a substantive record of research, or the potential thereof. The successful candidate would be expected to teach undergraduate courses in media production and/or multimedia and visual journalism, and graduate courses in journalism/mass communication. The successful candidate will have teaching or professional experience in areas such as narrative or documentary production, broadcast journalism, multimedia storytelling, podcasting, and/or data visualization. Valenti hosts ~500 undergraduate students majoring in media production, and these students gain real-world experience taking classes and producing content in our Lance T. Dear all, Please join us for a Zoom seminar this Friday on the intimacies of data-driven culture with Irina Shklovski, Deborah Lupton and Minna Ruckenstein. The talks will also be posted on our website for later viewing. What’s intimate about data? What’s intimate about data flows? Who tracks what or whom? Why should we care? Digital media is, especially in these times of social distancing, infrastructural in how we navigate the obligations of work, studies and social life. Devices, apps and services both generate and leak data as we message, do searches, post on social media, track our number of steps or match with someone on a dating app. All kinds of daily routines give rise to data shadows reflective of our habits, likes and intimate attachments. Our seminar asks, what is at stake in data-driven technologies both shaping and invading everyday life. The invited speakers are the world’s leading experts within the fields of research on intimacy, data and the digital world. This drives her research in three areas: privacy and creepy technologies, ethics and responsibility in innovation, and how to address the sense of powerlessness people experience in the face of massive personal data collection. break Deborah Lupton, University of New South Wales, “More-than-Human Data Intimacies” Deborah Lupton has a background in sociology and media and cultural studies. Minna Ruckenstein, University of Helsinki, “Self-Tracking and the Limits of Intimacy” Minna Ruckenstein works as an associate professor at the Consumer Society Research Centre and the Helsinki Centre for Digital Humanities. Her research group explores digitalization/datafication by highlighting emotional, social, political and economic aspects of current and emerging data practices.
