The European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) is an international venue on practice-centred computing and the design of cooperation technologies. It is a series of conferences on computer-supported cooperative work located in Europe that was established in 1989. The 19th edition of ECSCW will take place in Zurich, Switzerland, from 7 to 11 June 2021. This call invites submissions of Journal Papers, the most established category of papers featured in ECSCW. The submissions undergo an integrated, journal-like review and revision process. The accepted articles are published in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW): The Journal of Collaborative Computing and Work Practices. ECSCW 2021 Call for Journal Papers The European Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) invites submissions of original and novel research related to the wide field of CSCW. ECSCW is a single-track conference that contributes to developing an interdisciplinary and global community, supported by EUSSET, the European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies ( https://www.eusset.eu/) The conference format facilitates critical discussion across disciplinary and national borders in the field. The Conference features a range of submission formats including journal papers, exploratory papers, notes, posters, and demos, as well as various events such as masterclasses, workshops or a doctoral colloquium. Submission Description We invite journal papers documenting original, rich, and in-depth contributions to CSCW. Authors are encouraged to submit papers that improve and extend the CSCW field. Relevant themes include, but are not limited to: - Empirical investigations of collaborative practices. Findings, guidelines, and/or studies related to communication, collaboration, and social technologies, practices, or use. - System design focusing on solutions to support cooperative work in increasingly complex, networked, and data-driven settings. - Hardware, architectures, infrastructures, interaction design, technical foundations, algorithms, and/or toolkits that enable the building of new social and collaborative systems and experiences. - Methodologies and tools for investigating human practices, e.g., the nature of ethnography and the role of other innovative research approaches in building systems or studying their use, the application of critical design or design fictions to investigate future possibilities. - Critical analysis or theory with clear relevance to study, design, or use of collaborative settings and systems. - Domain-specific social and collaborative applications, including applications to digital civics, grassroots movements, healthcare, transportation, ICT4D, sustainability, education, workplace, accessibility, global collaboration, or other domains. - Analysis of the ethics and policy implications of socio-technical systems, the values that inform them, and the algorithms that shape them. - The changing nature of collaboration and teaming in relation to intelligent machine agents, e.g., human-AI relationships in collaborative practices. - Studies, prototypes, or other investigations that explore interactions across disciplines, distances, languages, generations, and cultures, to help understand how to design in relation to social, temporal, and/or spatial boundaries. - Discussions and extrapolations of work-practices and technologies, which contribute to the core topics of ECSCW. Review and Revision Process Submissions to the journal-track of the ECSCW conference will undergo a fully integrated, continuous review process. The submission and review process will allow authors to develop and refine stronger papers over a longer time period. The review process is single-blind. Each submission is assigned to one of the three ECSCW 2021 Journal Papers Chairs, who is in charge of finding three reviewers, writing a meta-review and making a decision. This decision is transmitted to the Lead Editor of the CSCW Journal in charge of ECSCW contributions, who will transmit the decision to the Editor in Chief of the Journal, and will manage conflicts of interest among the different Journal Papers Chairs if necessary. Authors of the submitted papers will be considered as reviewers for other submissions and may be contacted by the Journal Papers Chairs on this behalf. Authors are encouraged to submit as soon as they have their manuscripts ready. The system is already open for submissions. Early submissions will allow for multiple Revise & Resubmit cycles and will generally result in earlier publication of the accepted manuscript in the Journal. Papers could take approximately three months between submission and results of the first review cycle, and approximately two months in the subsequent review cycles, but the Journal Papers Chairs are working hard to speed the process up. Papers usually go through at least two review rounds. Upon an acceptance notice (status “Accept but incomplete”), the paper will go through production (including proof corrections) and only then will it be published on Springer Online First. To be considered for publication and presentation at ECSCW 2021, papers must reach the status “Accept but incomplete” by the 1st of April 2021. This status differs from a “Minor revisions” recommendation. The former refers to papers which require only minimal formatting amendments, while the latter refers to papers which still require some minor structural or conceptual changes. Early submission makes it more likely to receive reviews in a timely manner and speeds up the process of publication afterwards. If the paper does not reach the “Accept but incomplete” status by the 1st of April 2021, it will automatically be transferred to the batch of submissions for the subsequent ECSCW conference, unless the submission is withdrawn. With this approach, the authors will not have to restart the submission process. All work completed to this point will be considered for the next edition of the conference. This also means that authors may get their papers accepted shortly after the ECSCW 2021 conference. If this happens, the paper will be published as an Online First manuscript as soon as it goes through the production process; the authors will be invited to present their work at ECSCW 2022. The length of the paper must correspond to the size of the contribution. We suggest the papers to be between 10000 and 15000 words (including tables and appendices, excluding references). Communication Technology and Well-Being There are always concerns for people’s well-being in the current digital age. We are not unfamiliar with the worries that the usage of digital media may increase people’s stress, cause more depression, reduce life satisfaction, or elicit even more serious health problems. Therefore, technology giants, like Google, have emphasized their missions to improve users’ well-being, such as helping people form healthy habits of media use, stay away from distraction, and build balanced relationships with digital devices (see https://wellbeing.google/) However, not everyone agrees with the notion that people’s well-being in the digital age is in danger. A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center among more than 1,000 digital media experts discovered that almost half of the respondents believed in the beneficial impact of digital media on people’s well-being (Anderson & Rainie, 2018). For example, some people argue that the increased connectiveness through social media may benefit people’s mental health. Such inconsistency could also be found in the existing scholarship of well-being and digital media. While some research has reported direct and indirect effects of using digital media on various symptoms of ill-being (e.g., Primack et al., 2017; Vannucci, Flannery, & Ohannessian, 2017), other scholars have argued that using digital media does not necessarily hurt (e.g., Hall, Kearney, & Xing, 2018) or even benefits people’s well-being (e.g., Chou & Edge, 2012). Well-being is a complicated psychological construct. It contains multiple dimensions—from people’s temporary emotional feelings to their overall satisfaction of life (Chan, 2013; Goswami, 2012). It is not our intention to affirm whether using digital media improves or inhibits people’s well-being, as there is no consensus and there will probably not be one. We attempt to carry on the conversation of well-being in the digital age from a different perspective—to understand the role of communication technology. We believe communication technology is a double-edged sword for well-being. Instead of debating whether using digital media is good or bad, a more meaningful way is to investigate how the various aspects of communication technology influence the well-being of different groups of users under distinct circumstances. It is possible that a certain group of users may exhibit improved well-being with a certain aspect of communication technology under a certain circumstance, but they may exhibit a completely opposite symptom of well-being when the technology factor or contextual factor changes. The purpose of this special issue is to provide a forum where the role of communication technology in influencing digital users’ well-being could be deeply discussed. Empirical papers, qualitative research, and literature reviews are all welcome as long as the impact of a certain aspect of communication technology on people’s well-being is highlighted. By identifying the relevant boundary conditions and underlying mechanisms, this special issue aims to forward theory building and development in the field of technology psychology. The ultimate goal of this special issue is to provide some useful guidance for digital practitioners to better protect users and promote their well-being. JoCTEC is the official journal of the Communication Technology Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. This journal aims to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Topics Potential paper topics include (but are not limited to): ● The impact of using digital media on people’s emotions or moods. ● How does media multitasking influence people’s well-being? ● The role of technological features of digital media, such as interactivity and customization, in affecting people’s well-being. ● Users’ well-being in social media platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. ● Users’ well-being in emerging media platforms, like social live streaming (e.g., Twitch and Bilibili). ● Online gamers’ well-being. ● Information clutter/overload and well-being. ● How does digital advertising affect consumers’ well-being? ● How does “fake news” affect the public’s well-being? ● Children’s well-being in the digital age. The postholder will contribute to a mixed-method study into the politics of content governance in neighbourhood Facebook Groups. At the local scale, social media users broadly occupy the same geographical turf, and may encounter or even know one another. Because of this, harmful language or behaviour can have higher stakes, and the risk of offline harm can become exacerbated. This project will explore these issues by studying neighbourhood Facebook Groups across Greater London and its surrounding commuter belt. The project is funded by Facebook Research through an unrestricted research grant. Its Project Team consists of Dr Scott Rodgers (Principal Investigator); Dr Susan Moore (Co-Investigator); and Dr Andrea Ballatore (Co-Investigator). You would join this Project Team and lead the qualitative data collection for the project, including: a preliminary overview of neighbourhood Facebook Groups; selecting and observing a subset of ~16 Groups; in-depth interviews with group administrators and/or moderators; and analysing and interpreting this data using as appropriate software platforms. Alongside the Project Team, you would help formulate and co-author ~2 refereed publications, and lead on designing and authoring a publicly accessible online resource. We aspire for this post to offer a career development opportunity for an emerging social/digital media scholar. You will be welcomed into a collegial and stimulating research environment, with opportunities to participate in events, develop networks, and further your research interests. Some limited teaching opportunities may also be negotiated. In order to be successful in this role, you will need a PhD (or equivalent) in a field relevant to the project, e.g. social media research, digital culture, media studies or digital geography. You will have knowledge of current research and conceptual debates spanning one or more of these fields and have direct knowledge and experience in qualitative research methods and techniques, specifically in relation to online/social/digital media. Proficiency in specialist research software applications and platforms (e.g. NVivo, CrowdTangle) is also desirable. You should also have basic statistical literacy, and some general familiarity with, if not direct experience in, quantitative approaches to social media (e.g. natural language processing, social network analysis) and their possible integration with qualitative approaches. Remuneration Grade 7 of the College's London Pay Scale which is £38,594 per annum. The Department of Communication and Arts, Roskilde University, invites applications for a fully funded position as postdoc in datafication and journalism studies from November 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to a period of 2 years. The postdoc is part of the research project DataPublics funded by the Velux Foundation Denmark. The project is located at Roskilde University, and the successful applicant will be associated with the research groups Journalism and Democracy and Audiences and Mediated Life at the Department of Communication and Arts. The successful applicant will work in close collaboration with the project leader Associate Professor Jannie Møller Hartley and the Velux-research group around the project DataPublics, assistant professor Mette Bengtsson and PhD student Morten Fisher Sivertsen. The research project Data Publics examines what the ever-increasing amount of data available in our society means to Journalism, and thus sheds light on the changes in the relations between the news media and the news users. In recent few years, big tech companies such as Facebook, Google and Amazon have taken on an increasing role in news distribution, and their increased importance is changing not only the journalism as we know it today, but also the news media ecosystem itself. At the same time, news organizations have big data sets about the behavior of the news user, just as the news user can partly personalize his news consumption through filters and partly subject to filtering through various algorithms. In other words, the data affirmation has fundamentally changed the news journalism, and this project examines what it means and what consequences it has for the democratic conversation and public connection. The ideal candidate is an excellent media studies scholar, who has experience in digital infrastructure studies – particularly the new empirical and methodological developments in social and digital media. The candidate should be familiar with or have a strong interest in a transdisciplinary methodological approach, and experience with the field of media production studies. At a time when curtailed mobility has prompted many of us to take our work online, these conversations will consider some of the digital artefacts that avail themselves of STS analyses. While some traditional archives have gone online and other forms of archive are taking shape through the affordances of the internet (Ogden, Halford, and Carr 2019), conceptualising digital life as archive attunes us to the epistemic resources and the power dynamics that guide their aggregation online (Zeitlan 2012). This event comprises three/four ten minute talks on this theme and a subsequent panel discussion, followed by a workshop for HDR and ECRs who wish to engage further in these discussions. *How to participate:* This session has two parts: the first half will be a presentation from the presenters; the second half will be a workshop style format with participants taking part in activities and discussion.
