Hi, I would like to inform you about a survey that we (at MIT) have been doing in collaboration with Facebook. The survey is ongoing with over 400,000 respondents from 67 countries and focuses on beliefs, behaviors and norms related to COVID-19. ISTAS is a multi/inter/trans-disciplinary forum for engineers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, philosophers, researchers, social scientists, technologists, and polymaths to collaborate, exchange experiences, and discuss the social implications of technology. ISTAS20 Theme: Public Interest Technology Public interest technologies (PIT) serve to address social needs and challenges in society. People working in this space ask communities what their needs are first, without presuming they know what is best for them and generally use a participatory approach to innovation with values in mind and cultural awareness. In short, context matters in the creation of technologies and technological systems. Public interest technologies pertain to technologies that may aid not-for-profits and non-government organizations to achieve their goals. These technologies might leverage open source software for collaboration, and open data initiatives to overcome societal challenges, may exercise crowdsourcing and crowdsensing techniques toward collective awareness, and provide open workforce exchanges where Information and Communication Technologies and engineering volunteerism is encouraged towards satisfying the needs of under-resourced organizations and citizenry. Public interest technologies are equally relevant to private corporations who seek to embed the goals of human rights, social justice, sustainability and environmental justice in their workforce, going beyond corporate social responsibility and compliance. It is a corporate mode of operation that considers people as citizens, not just as customers in traditional business models. In essence, a public interest technology approach to design addresses public problems in society such as privacy encroachment, data breaches, unsustainable practices, humanitarian crises, energy inefficiencies, accessibility to information and how technology can be applied to aid in policymaking and public service for the alleviation of these problems and adherence to universal services and obligations of all peoples. ACM IUI 2021 - CALL FOR TUTORIAL PROPOSALS In conjunction with the 26th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2021) College Station, Texas April 13-17, 2021 https://iui.acm.org/2021/ Tutorial co-chairs Osnat Mokryn, University of Haifa Vijay Drajanna, Sensel Emails: ossimo(a)gmail.com vijay.drajanna(a)gmail.com CALL FOR PROPOSALS We are pleased to invite proposals for tutorials to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the tutorials is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (emails above), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of tutorials, including but not limited to: - "Hands-on" or “project-centric” tutorials around a specific problem or topic. - Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. Tutorials will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of proposals for half-day (3 hours) or full-day (6 hours) tutorials. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the tutorial chairs. We encourage you to consider virtual and semi-virtual options for the tutorial in the submission. The organizers of accepted tutorials are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Tutorial organizers are also required to set up their own website with information about the tutorial and the IUI 2021 web site will refer to this website. PROPOSAL FORMAT Tutorial proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions at https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template. Please either use the Word interim template with Libertine fonts downloaded and embedded, or the LaTex sigconf template. The proposals should be organized as follows: - Name and title: A one-word acronym and a full title. - Description of tutorial topic: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to IUI and its interest for the IUI2021 audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the tutorial is of particular interest. - Organizer(s): Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the organizer(s). Provide a brief description of the background of the organiser(s). Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Also please provide a list of other tutorials organized by the organizers in the past. - Participants: A statement saying how many participants you expect and how you plan to invite participants for the tutorial. If possible, include the names of at least 10 people who have expressed interest to participate in the tutorial. -Tutorial format: A brief description of the format regarding the mix of events or activities, such as teaching activities, hands-on practical exercises, and general discussion. Call for Applications: Two Associate Editors Officially Assuming Duties September 2020; Overseeing 2020-2023 Volumes The Journal of Communication Technology in association with the Communication Technology division of AEJMC is seeking applications for Associate Editors. The appointed Associate Editors will begin processing manuscripts Fall 2020, officially assuming duties Sept. 9, 2020 and overseeing volumes for 2020-2023. Description of the Journal The Journal of Communication Technology is the official journal of the Communication Technology division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The expressed aim of this journal is to bring together research that facilitates discussion and cultivates understanding of the ways in which communication technologies are changing not only media processes and content, but also audiences, institutions, and society at large. Since communication technologies themselves have now come to fulfill a central, social role in virtually all forms of mediated communication, JoCTEC welcomes scholarship from a broad area of inquiry provided that the focus pertains to communication technologies. This includes but is not limited to studies of social media, advertising, science, networks, health, politics, history, policy, public relations, management, economics, ethics, minorities, and visual communication. Requirements and Responsibilities The Associate Editors must be a member or become a member of AEJMC Communication Technology division and must maintain membership in the division throughout the editorial term. Additional responsibilities include the following: ● Promoting submissions to the journal. ● Providing timely decisions and suitable feedback to authors. ● Assembling issues according to the publication schedule. ● Maintaining good communication with fellow JoCTEC editorial team. About that COVID-19 app your university just required you to install...

Dear AIR-L friends, I bet many of you are among the millions who are just about to be required to install a new coronavirus-related app by your university. I'm writing to announce that the ESC Center has just released 15 best practices for pandemic apps at US universities. It is a very short read. Here is the list: http://esc.umich.edu/pandemic-apps/ My own personal takeaways are: [1.] App experts aren't recommending apps. (At least, not for many of the things they are being deployed to do.) And [2.] The apps being deployed right now by universities are deviating widely from good practice in terms of human rights and software development. These apps are doing all kinds of unexpected things in the name of the pandemic. A great example is Albion College, which reportedly just deployed the Genetworx Aura app to geofence its campus. If you live on campus and decide to go into town, they lock you out of your house. Free online event on microtargeting and elections

The event is co-sponsored by the Internet Society Washington DC Chapter and the Internet Governance Lab: Beyond Cambridge Analytica: Microtargeting and Online Campaigns in 2020. Use of data and microtargeting in political advertising were famously critiqued after in the 2016 US elections, and in relation to other recent influence campaigns around the world. Though the principal firm known for these campaigns, Cambridge Analytica, shuttered in 2018, these techniques are still widely employed, and several former CA employees are now involved with new data analytics and campaign firms including Datapropria, which has been linked to the 2020 election. New research on online discourse about COVID in the US

Dear AOIR, I imagine many of you will be preparing courses for next term and thinking about incorporating issues pertaining to COVID. With this in mind, I wanted to flag up two pieces of work I've recently published concerning discourse about COVID on Twitter in the US. The first looks at reactions to health misinformation, using Trump's comments about the potential of UV and disinfectant based treatments as a jumping off point: https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.05271 The second looks at articulations of different kinds of rights and freedoms (collective vs. individual, negative vs. positive freedoms etc.) in pro- and anti-COVID restriction discourse: https://arxiv.org/abs/2008.09440 I am hoping to publish two more before the end of the summer, one about balancing risks of systemic racism against risks of disease transmission in the May BLM protests and one about the potential impacts on the November election, using discourse about voting in some of the primaries that occurred this summer.
