Dear All, I wanted to let you know that Open Humanities Press has just published my new book, the contents of which will hopefully be of interest to the readers of this list. Fittingly for our times, it discusses a world behind windows and screens in which we all become part of a vapour-like global labour force, no matter how creative our occupations or ambitions are. AI Art: Machine Visions and Warped Dreams by Joanna Zylinska Like all Open Humanities Press books, *AI Art* is freely available to download: http://www.openhumanitiespress.org/books/titles/ai-art/ Can computers be creative? Is algorithmic art just a form of Candy Crush? Cutting through the smoke and mirrors surrounding computation, robotics and artificial intelligence, Joanna Zylinska argues that, to understand the promise of AI for the creative fields, we must not confine ourselves solely to the realm of aesthetics. Instead, we need to address the role and position of the human in the current technical setup – including the associated issues of labour, robotisation and, last but not least, extinction. Offering a critique of the socio-political underpinnings of AI, *AI Art: Machine Visions and Warped Dreams* raises poignant questions about the conditions of art making and creativity today. The book critically examines artworks that use AI, be it in the form of visual style transfer, algorithmic experiment or critical commentary. It also engages with their predecessors, including robotic art and net art. *AI Art* includes a project from Zylinska’s own art practice titled ‘View from the Window’, which explores human and nonhuman forms of intelligence, perception and action. The book closes with speculation on future art – and on art’s future. About the author Joanna Zylinska is a writer, lecturer, artist, curator, and – according to the ImageNet Roulette’s algorithm – a ‘mediatrix’. She is currently Professor of New Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. The author of a number of books on art, philosophy and technology – including *The End of Man: A Feminist Counterapocalypse* (University of Minnesota Press, 2018), *Nonhuman Photography* (MIT Press, 2017) and *Minimal Ethics for the Anthropocene* (Open Humanities Press, 2014) – she is also involved in more experimental and collaborative publishing projects, such as *Photomediations* (2016). Don’t we all want to participate? For all its problems, participation still has a great public image, in large part due to its associations with self-expression and democratic legitimacy. Meanwhile, the terminology surrounding those who engage with our research projects, and how we as researchers engage in the worlds we act on and observe, continues to shift. Are those with whom we do research perhaps “interlocutors” engaged in a dialogue, or “collaborators” in a kind of conspiracy, or maybe “participants” in our imposed agendas? Are we as researchers “participant observers” or can we not help but to interfere? These questions have been thrown into sharp relief in 2020, as questions about how we engage has been disrupted, triggering new thinking about the forms of participation that have characterised research and how they might be remade. In this workshop, Kari Lancaster, Jenny Kennedy, Timothy Neale and Matthew Kearnes will reflect on the many meanings of participation in their research. Those who attend the workshop will be required to complete a small amount of reading beforehand and submit a question – relating to participation – about a current or possible future research project for small group discussion. *How to participate:* This session has two parts: the first half will be a panel discussion from the presenters; the second half will be a workshop style format with participants taking part in activities and discussion. Furthermore, applicants should be profoundly experienced in qualitative methods of digital communication research. Teaching Fellow in Digital Media and Culture Full time (36.5 hours per week) Fixed term contract for 12 months. The Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (CIM) at University of Warwick seeks to appoint a 1 year full-time Teaching Fellow. You will contribute to our Masters programmes by teaching on one or more of our existing modules and may be required to develop your own module in collaboration with other members of the Centre. You will undertake module development, lecturing, seminar and workshop teaching, essay tutorials, office hours, marking of postgraduate work, and monitoring of student attendance in accordance with the Centre’s quality assurance practices. Where appropriate, you will also be required to provide pastoral support and guidance to postgraduate students during the academic year. You will possess experience in teaching and have a background in digital culture, digital media studies and social studies of technology appropriate for research-led teaching. You should have completed a PhD in a field related to the above, or have your viva scheduled. All applications must be accompanied by a CV and covering letter and names of two referees. Jean What is #ResearchersOnRead? #ResearchersOnRead is a campaign by AlgorithmWatch’s Governing Platform project. The campaign aims to collect experiences of researchers who have been ‘left on read’, i.e. ignored or snubbed by platforms as they conduct public interest research on issues like hate speech, bias, or disinformation. The stories will be compiled and published to our website as a journalistic story (or series of stories, depending on the number of submissions). These stories will help us shape a narrative about the importance of improving access to data and introducing strong platform transparency tools ahead of the discussions on EU’s proposed Digital Services Act. Recording phone interviews

Hi everyone, Given these times of social distancing, a colleague and I are conducting interviews by telephone. We are looking for solutions to record the interviews locally (so that we can transcribe them), but also maintain the privacy of the interviewees. We have considered various options (from conducting the interview over loudspeaker with a recorder next to it, to using Google Voice, to using subscription services). We have decided against services that ‘join’ the call as a conference call participant and send you the recording because we would like to maintain full control over the recorded data (again, for ethical reasons). So, we were wondering what the experience of the community here has been. Are there any recent and reliable tools that people here are using? What have you found to work well? Thanks!
