Seeking non-Zoom platform recs for a workshop

Hi all, I'm gearing up to later this year co-teach a series of workshops that's a hybrid game-development / creative-writing workshop. We want to find a non-Zoom, possibly graphics-based solution that can help us meet and be in a digital space that existing in will help prime people to feel more receptive to exploring creative ideas together - we don't need video for this class. Maybe at most it would be great to find a platform that would let people share and present files or small video clips of their work, but that would be secondary. Does anyone have any recommendations for platforms that might fit this description? I'm building a short list of ones to consider but have found it surprisingly difficult to search and find new ones... Thanks! David

What are the opportunities and limits of existing analytic tools for understanding new forms of digital valuation? What vistas and perspectives do emerge for research into valuation? This theme issue of *Valuation Studies* will explore novel, cross-cutting approaches to problematizing, analyzing, and examining the intersection of digitization and valuation in contemporary societies. Contributions are welcome from a number of approaches to the study of valuation practices, including sociological, anthropological, cultural, political, semiotic, historiographic, legal, institutional, critical, and organisational. Potential research themes include, but are not limited to: * Linkages between digitization, valuation, and accountability * The relationship between digital and other modes of valuation * Issues of bias, discrimination, and gaming in digital valuation * Innovative methodologies for studying digital valuation * The roles and relevance of automation in digital valuation * The relationship between digital valuation and new modes of governing * How different modes of sensing the world (digital or otherwise) are valued * How agency is redistributed by digital valuation systems * Questions of privacy, ownership, and control * Due process, recourse, and contestability * Historical analyses of digital valuation practices Expressions of interest should be submitted in the form of an extended abstract (about 1,000 words). New article on algorithms in facilitating online deliberation

Hi all, I hope you're staying safe and well. My article on algorithmic facilitation in online deliberation has been published in Contemporary Politics. In the article I survey some of theoretical and practical blind spots in replacing human facilitators with algorithms and artificial facilitators (chatbots) in democratic citizen deliberation. With Facebook now having existed for more than a decade and a half, young people who have grown up using social media can look back and see earlier versions of themselves staring back: nostalgic moments with friends from school, reminders of painful breakups, birthdays and graduations, posts that allude to drama with family, experiences of travel, and blurry drunken photos. How do we make sense of our own personal histories inscribed on and through social media? What are the implications for future careers, for public trust in social media companies, and for our own memories? Growing up on Facebook examines the role of Facebook, and other social media platforms that have emerged around Facebook, in mediating experiences of 'growing up' for young people. Based on interviews with the first generation of young people to grow up with social media, the book covers education and employment, love and relationships, family life, and leisure (drinking, travel, and music). Educators' Perception of Cultural Inclusivity in Online Teaching

The University of Northern Iowa faculty is conducting a research study on educators' perceptions of cultural inclusivity in online learning. We invite educators to respond to a survey about their perception of cultural inclusivity in online teaching and learning. We seek responses from educators from different disciplines globally. Theorizing the Web Presents: Surveillance of Black Lives

Dear AoIR Community, As you may have heard, due to the continued impact of Covid-19, we’ve made the hard decision to cancel Theorizing the Web 2020 at the Museum of the Moving Image on October 16 & 17. As much as we’d wanted to celebrate 10 years of Theorizing the Web in person, we owe it to you and to all of our communities not to risk facilitating the spread of the novel coronavirus. That said, we haven’t given up: Although there won’t be an in-person conference this year, we’ve come up with something that we hope can fill the TtW-shaped hole in your hearts and minds. TtW Presents will feature live video discussions in partnership with the Museum of the Moving Image. Some of these talks will be in the style of our evening keynotes, while others will be more like our daytime sessions. The journal tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critque (http://www.triple-c.at) celebrates Engels’ birthday with a special issue, in which critical theorists reflect on the relevance of Engels’ works for the analysis of digital and communicative capitalism. The special issue’s contributions shall provide perspectives that address the question: How do Friedrich Engels’ works matter for the critical analysis of digital and communicative capitalism? Contributions focus on single or several of Friedrich Engels’ works.
