How to calculate survey sample size for multiple social media platforms?

Hello everybody, Hopefully you are all safe and sound. I need to conduct an online survey, which will be handed out through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the website of a local online newspaper. My objective is to reach their audience as a whole, yet I am confused and lost about how to calculate the survey sample size having in consideration that: 1) There are fans from Facebook and followers in Instagram who are the same person (but of course I cannot match them to filter them out); 2) What number should I use as a population in order to calculate the sample size --i.e Facebook fans, Twitter followers, Instagram followers, web page visitors, or a sum of all of those, an average of all of those, should I calculate and therefore run one survey sample size for each platform/source? If you could give me any input/feedback on this I will be very glad. Part of the new Urban Intersections series hosted by Birkbeck, University of London, each speaker will offer an initial set of reflections drawing on work in-progress (abstracts below), followed by a discussion with one another as well as webinar attendees. Invaded, Degenerate, Untraversable: Far Right Political Geographies of the “Western” City (Bharath Ganesh, University of Groningen) In this talk, I will present initial reflections on far right’s political geography of the city, centering on three tropes. First, the far right imagines the city as the front line of an invasion and “replacement” of “native” culture, with images of mosques, of slums, and non-white inhabitants frequently reproduced in digital cultures. Second, the city is constructed as culturally degenerate, dilapidated, and controlled by leftists. Third, often articulated through the trope of the “no-go zone”, the far right’s political geography of the city renders it as untraversable, a space of risk that threatens the safety of white people—particularly women—that seek to travel through it. In presenting reflections on these three tropes of the far right’s political geography of the city, it emerges as a mythical entity that reflects far right anxiety over the supremacy of whiteness in European and North American space. This myth-making is not simply diagnostic; the myth of the city as invaded, degenerate, and untraversable synthesizes a false sense of white victimhood, reconfiguring the right to the city as the demand for the (maintenance of) the inscription of white supremacy in urban space. The Right in the City: From Charlottesville to the Boogaloo Boys and Beyond (Robert Topinka, Birkbeck, University of London) This talk charts a provisional trajectory from the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville to street-fighting Proud Boys in Seattle’s CHAZ and the menacing but ambiguous public appearance of so-called Boogaloo Boys at recent Black Lives Matter protests. Although these reactionary subcultures are typically understood to be ‘extremely online,’ the city looms large in the reactionary imaginary not only as a scene of riotous, unruly black and brown bodies but as a material and embodied site of violent political contestation. I suggest that recent work on platform urbanism has much to offer the study of right-wing extremism. Rather than attempting to categorize these contradictory reactionary phenomena as ‘movements,’ I argue that the recombinatory and modular affordances of platforms shape and circulate protean political affects in digital and urban space. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) communities meet, with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, and more. Our focus is on improving the interaction between humans and digital technology, by leveraging both HCI approaches and state-of-the art AI techniques from machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ### Why you should submit to ACM IUI While other conferences focus on either the AI or HCI side of this research, we address the complex interaction between the two. We strongly encourage submissions that simultaneously discuss research from both HCI and AI. We also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other, but still highlight the connections between the two. We value papers that contribute methodology or theory for the evaluation of intelligent user interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contributions. Digital Sociology seminar series launch

We would like to alert subscribers to the roll out of an ongoing series of discussions hosted by the British Sociological Association's Digital Sociology Study Group. Starting from July 15th 2020, The Digital Sociology Study Group will be hosting monthly discussions, workshops, and book launches with academics, researchers, authors, practitioners, and activists exploring a range of issues around digital sociology. These will be hosted online and available to all who wish to take part. The first session, taking place 13:00 - 13:45 on July 15th, will be a book-launch for ‘Designing the Social: Unpacking Social Media Design and Identity’<https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-981-15-5716-3> written by Harry Dyer, a member of the Digital Sociology Study Group and a Lecturer in Education at the University of East Anglia. This will be a 20 minute introduction to the book from Harry, followed by a Q+A. Call for nominations, 2020 ASIS&T SIG SI (Social Informatics) Awards

The *Special Interest Group for Social Informatics* (SIG SI) of the *Association for Information Science and Technology* (ASIS&T) is issuing a *call for nominations* for the 2020 Annual *ASIS&T SIG SI Awards*, with *nominations due by July 10*. Self-nominations are welcome and the nomination process is quite short, as detailed below. For those familiar with our prior awards structure please note there are a few changes this year. We seek nominations in the following two categories: 1. *Best Paper**:* For a paper published either in a *peer-reviewed journal* or in *peer-reviewed conference proceedings*, during the *2019 calendar year*, on a *topic informed by social informatics*. Submissions from all researchers at any career stage are welcomed. The winning author(s) will receive a *$750 (USD) cash award* and be *invited to attend* and have their work recognized at the *Social Informatics Research Symposium* as part of the ASIS&T 2020 Annual Meeting. The Symposium is co-organized by SIG SI, SM (Social Media), and IEP (Information Ethics & Policy) and will be held online later this fall. 2. *Emerging Social Informatics Researchers*: For up to *two students* whose research is on *topics informed by and/or relating to social informatics*. Center on Digital Culture and Society University of Pennsylvania Call for Applications for a Post-doctoral Fellowship The Center on Digital Culture and Society (https://cdcs.asc.upenn.edu/) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication invites applications to fill one postdoctoral fellowship position for the 2020-2021 academic year. Applications are welcomed from scholars who have received their Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last three years. The term of appointment is: September 1, 2020 – August 31, 2021. Founded in July 2019, the Center on Digital Culture and Society (CDCS) supports critical, interdisciplinary scholarship on digital culture, technology, and society. CDCS aims to develop critical approaches to digital cultural studies and create spaces for dialogue and collaboration among academics, citizens, and activists. CDCS postdoctoral fellowships support research on all aspects of digital culture and society which fall within CDCS’s broad mission. Fellows at the CDCS pursue their own research and participate in the activities of the Center. This fellowship comes with a stipend of $75,000, a $3,000 research fund, and health insurance. In addition to research, responsibilities of this fellowship include managing the CDCS website, the speakers series, workshops, and other CDCS office and academic activities.
