While technologies like videoconferencing and learning management systems have drawn a great deal of critical review and pedagogical development, we can also apply the lessons of higher education's sudden foray into mass remote teaching to other types of tools. In particular, XR-a catch-all term including augmented and virtual reality, as well as related technologies for spatial and pervasive computing-holds both great potential and challenges for educational use under pandemic conditions. This virtual conference will explore areas where XR can mitigate the challenges of engaging with students and collaborators remotely as well as investigate new opportunities to apply XR technologies across remote, face-to-face, or hybrid environments. In particular, we are interested in opportunities to use XR to help teach and work within or across disciplines such as laboratory science, clinical education, studio art, fieldwork, or other object- and place-based teaching and research. We welcome proposals for brief (5-minute) lightning talks showing off existing XR projects. Of interest are student and faculty feedback from remote classes that can help shape future XR projects, and ideas for safely dealing with the logistics of technology that is literally in your face while trying to maintain social distancing standards, as well as discoveries or ideas related to knowledge discovery and collaboration. These brief presentations will be organized into sessions that seed generative discussions as part of a day-long event. Examples of relevant presentations would include: - Discussions of existing XR software that has been deployed for classroom use (live in-headset demonstrations will not be supported, though screenshots and videos are welcome), independent research, or collaborations - Results of faculty or student surveys highlighting where XR could fill gaps in remote learning built around videoconferencing - Experiments in or ideas for using XR to support remote community building in teaching or research - How plans for exploring or deploying XR in the classroom or research have changed since the beginning of the pandemic - Examples of development patterns or technologies to quickly build lessons or research platforms for XR - Rigorous testing methodologies that demonstrate efficacy - or the lack of efficacy - for XR as a classroom tool that increases student engagement or improves learning outcomes - Best practices for safely sharing XR resources like VR headsets while trying to contain viral spread - Ideas for designing pedagogy meant for headsets rather than screens - Sources for primary materials that have particular impact when experienced with XR (e.g. 360 videos) - Methods for hybridizing experiences that are partially virtual and partially physical - Research on the environments in which students and faculty have been accessing remote classes, including how spaces are shared at home, network connection quality, and other factors that could influence XR adoption - Novel technologies and applications that expand the classroom, laboratory, or workspace by mixing the virtual and the physical HOSTS Information, Technology, and Consulting; The Neukom Institute; Film and Media Studies @ Dartmouth College Online Learning Initiative @ University of Pennsylvania

Mark *Call for papers - Migration, migrant work(ers) and the gig economy - Environment and Planning A* The study of platform-mediated gig work has granted insufficient critical attention to questions of migration and migrant labour. My colleagues, Niels van Doorn, Fabian Ferrari, and Srujana Katta, and I, are putting together a theme issue <https://journals.sagepub.com/pb-assets/EPA%20theme%20issue%20GRAHAM%20et%20…> of Environment and Planning A to address that gap (see also our working paper on Migration and Migrant Labour in the Gig Economy <https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3622589>). One set of questions that contributors to the theme issue may address concerns the structural role of migrant labour in sustaining the gig economy. Without a steady influx of migrants, platform companies like Uber, Ola, Helpling, Rappi, and Deliveroo would have trouble maintaining their labour supply in almost any of the cities in which they operate. As is the case for the informal economy, the precise numbers of migrants working in the gig economy remains unclear, due to the lack of comprehensive publicly accessible data on the topic. However, from New York to Santiago to Cape Town to London, it is clear that migrant workers play an outsized role in providing the labour power behind a range of services offered in the gig economy, where the distinction between formal and informal labor is frequently blurred. Even in India and China, countries with huge domestic labour markets, internal migrants play an oversized role in providing key gig economy services such as ride-hailing, domestic work, and food delivery. In this sense, it is evident that migrant labour serves an infrastructural function for these platform companies—one that is as vitally important as the steady influx of investment capital—and its governance at the intersection of labour market regulation and immigration policy forms a critical institutional condition for their business model’s viability. Another set of questions concerns migrants’ lived experiences of work and social reproduction within the gig economy. The relative ease of finding work through platforms enables a valuable lifeline for migrants, who often face significant barriers to formal employment and welfare provision. However, compared to native-born gig workers, migrants often face additional dimensions of precarity as a result of their migrant status. For example, they are often subject to discrimination from consumers and co-workers alike, face accusations of depressing wages, and encounter substantial uncertainty with shifts in policy regimes (e.g. Brexit). Crises like the COVID-19 pandemic render workers with irregular immigration status especially precarious, as their tenuous existence at society’s economic and socio-legal margins inhibits their access even to the marginal support afforded by platforms and/or governments. It is clear that—as in other contexts of precarious work—migrants’ working lives in the gig economy are forged at the intersections of workplace conditions, labour market and welfare regulation, migration policy, and public attitudes towards migrants. In order to bring questions around migration and migrant labour to the forefront of debates on the gig economy and platform-mediated work, and to thereby connect these debates to broader concerns pertaining to migrants’ position in low-wage labour markets and informal sectors, this theme issue of EPA: Economy and Space will bring together new and original scholarship on these topics. The ‘gig economy’ in this context is understood broadly, to comprise both location-based platform labor and remote cloud/crowdwork platforms. We invite papers and commentaries including, but not limited to: - The role of migration in local and global platform-mediated labour markets; - The intersections of migration, welfare, and labour market policies, and their impacts on gig workers and gig economy platforms; - The opportunities and challenges of platform-mediated gig work for migrants; - Migrants’ overlapping experiences with gig work and other kinds of formal and informal labor arrangements; - The socially reproductive struggles and strategies of migrant gig workers and their families; - Labour market segmentation and inequalities in the gig economy due to intersecting factors such as immigration status, gender, race/ethnicity, nationality, education, and age. - Labour platforms’ hiring, management and promotional strategies with respect to migrant workers; - The impacts of changing migration policy (e.g. Brexit) on migrant gig workers; - The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on migrant gig workers; - Policy approaches to creating and sustaining decent working and living conditions for migrant gig workers. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) communities meet, with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, and more. Our focus is on improving the interaction between humans and digital technology, by leveraging both HCI approaches and state-of-the art AI techniques from machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ### Why you should submit to ACM IUI While other conferences focus on either the AI or HCI side of this research, we address the complex interaction between the two. We strongly encourage submissions that simultaneously discuss research from both HCI and AI. We also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other, but still highlight the connections between the two. We value papers that contribute methodology or theory for the evaluation of intelligent user interfaces. We do not require evaluations with users, but we do expect papers to include an appropriate evaluation for their stated contributions. Cheers, annette ******** *CfP: ‘Algorithmic Governance in Context’* Special issue of *New Media & Society* Special issue editors: Daria Gritsenko (University of Helsinki), Annette Markham (RMIT), Holger Pötzsch (UiT – The Arctic University of Norway) and Mariëlle Wijermars (Maastricht University) We invite paper proposals for a special issue in the journal *New Media & Society* that will interrogate the functions and effects of algorithms in contemporary governance. Contributing to the current academic debate, the special issue seeks to conceptualize the notion of context in algorithmic governance by, first, perceiving of algorithmic governance as an activity taking place in a variety of contexts and aiming at investigating these contexts in a systematic manner. Second, by focusing not only on how algorithms are used as tools for governance, but also on how such tools can be governed – controlled and held to account – and what challenges such forms of governance imply. The use of algorithms in society can imply a moving of contestable issues from negotiable to non-negotiable spaces, thereby reducing agency and influence of human actors. Active recontextualizations can become an important tool to problematize such and other consequences of algorithmic governance and reveal possible unintended implications and effects. The special issue builds upon a series of workshops (2019-2020) facilitated by a networking grant from *The Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils in the Humanities and Social Sciences* (NOS-HS) coordinated at the University of Helsinki, that focused on the multiplicity of contexts in which algorithmic systems operate. Drawing upon the conceptual work conducted during the workshops, the special issue focuses on two key themes: multiplying the contexts of algorithmic governance and governing algorithms in context. *Multiplying the contexts of algorithmic governance* Articles are invited that explore how specific conditions impact upon the efficacy and perceived legitimacy of algorithms as tools for governance. In particular, contributions may direct attention to the manifold everyday practices through which algorithmic governance is effectuated and investigate the legal, political, cultural, economic, and technological frames that predispose and tacitly guide these. Through this focus, it becomes clear that algorithmic governance is not only a deeply contextual activity, but also an activity carried out within the frames of a multiplicity of different and often competing context*s*. Identifying exactly which contexts matter when, in which ways, and to whom becomes an important task for the planning of algorithmic forms of governance in and through autonomous machine learning systems. At the same time, active recontextualization enables problematizing and resisting algorithmic governance in cases where it is perceived as illegitimate or biased. *Governing algorithms in context* Articles are invited that focus on the fact that algorithms at once govern, and are themselves governed by, either human or non-human agents. The increased use of algorithms in all areas of life makes the question of how to understand and sufficiently control such governing algorithms a timely and salient area of critical inquiry. Issues such as the complexity and opacity of algorithmic assessment and feedback systems as well as their growing autonomy and pervasiveness are important areas of research dedicated to improving the governance of algorithms. Articles could, for example, aim at facilitating new technical solutions, at raising public awareness, at informing practices of decision-makers and funding bodies, as well as at critically assessing cultural and other responses to the governance of algorithms. We welcome both disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives and studies employing various social scientific methods, including comparative case-studies, ethnography, socio-legal studies, design studies, and historical inquiry. We particularly encourage studies that challenge the status quo, either through innovative (mixed method) methodologies or critical reflections on the state of the art. Papers could address, but are not limited to, the following questions: · What are the different ‘realities’ constructed by the use of algorithms in governance? How do they play out across time and space? · How do individuals – in private or organisational contexts – make sense of and respond to algorithmic governance? · What are the similarities and differences in the deployment of algorithmic governance within public and private sectors? · What are the challenges of developing effective strategies for governing algorithms at the intersection of law and technology? · How can different publics be made aware of ‘algorithmic bads’, while still benefiting from ‘algorithmic goods’? Savannah State University invites applications for a tenure-track teaching and administrative appointment as Associate Professor/Professor and Chair of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications. The Chair will have administrative responsibility for the Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications with concentrations in Journalism, Multimedia and Digital Communications, and Public Relations and Strategic Communications. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communications currently has an enrollment of 300 students. The Chair will also be required to teach two courses per semester and may be directed to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically delineated in this description. Additionally, the candidate should present an established research and practice record in Journalism or Mass Communications and show a history of service at the university and community levels. Demonstrated knowledge of and show evidence of experience with Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC) structures, self-study writing and procedures, reaffirmation standards and program assessment. Must show experience in developing and supporting distance education, grant acquisition, securing of external funding, and resource development preferred.
