Dear all, a call for contributions to AoIR colleagues working on issues of health, illness and medicine. As you'll see, the longer CfP invites those engaging in internet research, so please do consider submitting an abstract. *Full CfP*: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/pb-assets/SHI%20CfP%20July%202020-159419659… *Complicity: Methodologies of power, politics, and the ethics of knowledge production (Special Issue and edited monograph)* The annual Sociology of Health and Illness journal monograph is this year focused on 'methodological complicity'. We are interested in incorporating critical reflections from beyond sociology, and would certainly welcome relevant contributions from internet researchers and media and comms scholars exploring health related issues. Global inequalities, colonial legacies, and the innumerable power imbalances striating the social world have never been more pertinent to social studies of health and illness. It is thus vital to interrogate how exactly we research these issues, as well as the ethics and politics of knowledge production relating to them. We ask, what problematic and productive complicities might we as researchers engage in as we endeavour to produce this knowledge? We understand ‘complicity’ as a broad, explorative term for thinking through the methodological politics of contemporary sociological research into health and illness. *About the journal and monograph series* Sociology of Health and Illness is a world leading journal for the medical sociology community (Impact factor 2.2; 30/148 in Sociology). ACM IUI 2021 CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS In conjunction with the 26th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2021) College Station, TX, USA April 13 - 17, 2021 http://iui.acm.org/ IUI 2021 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics (or related). This year we are particularly interested in workshops that have an interactive aspect. Preference will be given to workshops with interactive and hands-on sessions where participants can team up or work together towards the common goal of the workshop. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to: - "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). - "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. - "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation. == PROPOSAL FORMAT == Note: One of the keys to a successful workshop submission is to CONTACT THE CHAIRS WITH YOUR IDEAS (workshops2021(a)iui.acm.org) and work together to prepare an exciting proposal! Workshop proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the standard sigconf format, using one of the Interim ACM templates available at http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html Please submit your proposal via the PCS 2.0 submission system (https://new.precisionconference.com) The proposals should be organized as follows: - Name and title: A one-word workshop acronym and a full title. - Description of workshop topic and goal: This description should discuss the relevance of the suggested topic to the IUI audience. Include a brief discussion of why and for which audience the workshop is of particular interest. - Organizers: Names, affiliations, emails, and web pages of the workshop organizers. This can be a single person or a group of people. Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Please indicate the primary contact person and the organizers who plan to attend the workshop. - Previous history: List of previous workshops that were held on the topic including the conferences that hosted past workshops and the number of participants. Also please provide the list of other workshops organized by workshop organizers in the past. - Workshop program committee: Names and affiliation of the members of the (tentative) workshop program committee that will evaluate the workshop submissions. - Participants: A statement saying how many participants you expect and how you plan to invite participants for the workshop. We recommend the proposal to include the names of at least 10 people who have expressed interest to participate in, or contribute a paper to, the workshop. - Workshop format: A brief description of the workshop format regarding the mix of events such as paper presentations, invited talks, panels, demonstrations, and general discussion. - Length: Full-day or half-day. - Proposal format: Workshop proposals should be maximum 2 pages long and follow the formatting instructions from (sigconf): http://www.acm.org/publications/article-templates/proceedings-template.html Additional guidelines: ---------------------- - Workshop proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop chairs. - Organizers: We strongly encourage all of the workshop organizers to attend IUI and take part in their workshop. Last call for HICSS, Digital Methods (7/15 deadline)

Hi, all, Just a quick reminder that the extended deadline for this coming year's HICSS-54 conference is rapidly approaching: July 15. The conference remains scheduled for this January on Kauai, but even if conditions forbid travel at that point, the proceedings for HICSS are well cited (the most cited proceedings in the information sciences, according to Google Scholar). L. Cullen, and Christopher Persaud Live streaming is a rapidly growing phenomenon that is having profound effects on the contemporary landscape of digital media, entertainment, and online culture. Across the internet, live streaming takes an array of forms: from gaming-focused sites like Twitch and Mixer, where millions of viewers watch live video gameplay, to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube, where streamers translate their day-to-day lives into broadcasts. As with all technological platforms, live streaming is deeply shaped by (and also itself actively shapes) broader cultural issues. This edited volume will take an interdisciplinary approach to the study of cultural issues in live streaming. Examples of topic areas include but are not limited to: identity, community, power, access, aesthetics, gender, sexuality, race, disability, discrimination, harassment, politics, and activism. While important fundamental work on live streaming has been done by game studies scholars like T. L. Taylor, Mia Consolvo, and Will Partin (among many others), this collection will expand that research to a broader network of questions around the relationship between live streaming and society. We understand live streaming to encompass many forms of real-time broadcasting online such as: Just Chatting streams on Twitch, social eating on YouTube, live music on Facebook, webcam modeling on MyFreeCams, as well as video and analog gameplay. Scholars, methods, and perspectives from across disciplines are all welcome, as long as they are rooted in the cultures, human experiences, and histories that surround live streaming. Contributions from non-academics, including streamers and community organizers, are also encouraged. Contributions may take one of the following general formats: - Academic article written for an interdisciplinary audience. Accessible writing is appreciated. - First-person account of experiences with streaming or streaming communities. - Q&A-style interview with live streamers or others involved in live streaming cultures. - Research- or experience-based call to action, such as arguments for new approaches to design, community management, or platform policy. Abstracts of 300-500 words are due by July 17, 2020 and can be submitted to the contact address above. Authors can expect to hear back regarding abstracts by August 14. Full paper submissions of 3,000 - 5,000 words will be due December 18. Any citation style is acceptable for abstracts. The OECD's Network of Experts on Artificial Intelligence has launched a short survey to identify and share practical approaches and good practices that can be learned from in order to implement trustworthy AI systems; that is, AI systems which embody principles such as human rights, fairness, transparency, explainability, security, safety and accountability.
