She is a human rights lawyer and privacy and data protection expert. Her work focuses on the opportunities and challenges that arise at the intersection of human rights and technology. Rob Kitchin is a Professor in the Maynooth University Social Sciences Institute, Ireland. He has conducted extensive research on digital technologies and their impact on society. He is (co)author or (co)editor of 30 academic books and a couple of hundred articles and book chapters. He is a recipient of the Royal Irish Academy’s Gold Medal for the Social Sciences. ACM UMAP 2020 - Call for Student Volunteers Applications

The UMAP Student Award Program is intended to help student authors be a part of the first online UMAP conference. Student Awards are given to students to encourage them to attend UMAP 2020. Preference will be given to Doctoral Consortium presenters and to students who are first authors and will present their paper at the conference. Preference will be also given to Ph.D. students and to underrepresented groups such as women. Students from low income countries are also encouraged to apply, regardless of whether they are authors or not. The UMAP 2020 conference will take place online instead of physically in Genoa, Italy, due to Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, student volunteers will be requested to help session chairs (according to their time zones) manage the virtual sessions. They should also provide technical assistance remotely to attendees in connecting to the online platform and speakers during presentations. Sessions will be covered by several students so that the load for each student will be limited. Student volunteers will thus have the opportunity to attend several sessions. Training will be provided to the volunteers on the use and troubleshooting of the conference tools, if necessary. Throughout the conference, the student volunteers will also be assisted by student volunteers chairs. Financial support will be provided via reimbursement of the registration fees. Culture, identity and inclusion mini-track at the 54th HICSS conference - deadline extended to July 15

With apologies for cross-posting: The deadline for submitting papers to the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences has been extended to July 15th, 2020. The organizers expect to hold the conference on Kauai as planned, as it is known for its interdisciplinary interactions, and add that "if it becomes evident that face-to-face convening in Kauai is not advisable, we will propose an alternate solution to preserve as much as possible the HICSS experience." Regardless of what happens, all the accepted papers will be published in the HICSS proceedings, which are open access, highly cited and an excellent way for your work to reach diverse researchers. Consider submitting to our mini-track on Culture, Identity, and Inclusion within the Digital and Social Media track. The CULTURE, IDENTITY & INCLUSION Digital and Social Media Minitrack The research possibilities and practice implications for systems sciences’ examinations of the complex intersections of digital and social media with culture, identity and inclusion are especially timely now and expanding rapidly. There is a need for multi-disciplinary and cross-cultural approaches and methodologies as well as for ethical and innovative analyses. Papers addressing major societal including racial, generational, implicit and/or explicit inequalities and/or COVID 19 in the context of this minitrack are particularly encouraged. This minitrack welcomes a range of research foci, methods and frameworks as it addresses this vital and ever-changing research arena. Work is needed to focus on the culture kaleidoscope (the myriad levels of culture from small group and occupational to organizational, interorganizational and national) as well as the intersectionality of culture, gender, identity and material conditions including poverty. Similar to the culture kaleidoscope there are also multiple and complex identities including cultural, racial, gender, age, generational, and ability-related identities. Most importantly, the intersections among social media and the culture and identity kaleidoscopes presage additional research agendas as we examine social media design and usages and their outcomes in myriad contexts. Indeed, what is the relationship between social media and social change in the context of culture, identity and inclusion? Can the design and use of digital media platforms combat exclusion and, if so, how and under what conditions? Is there decolonization of social media, assuming digital media colonization? Similarly, can the use and design of digital and social media help shape (or reshape) identities? What are the overlaps among social media and power with regard to gender or identity or inclusion (and in what settings)? Do digital and social media have a role in relationship with major inequalities in society? The overall future trajectory of our field itself remains open and provides plentiful research challenges. More attention also needs to be focused on rigorous yet appropriate research methodologies for such exploration and the new ethical challenges that accompany this work. These presage increased collaboration across disciplines with a focus on the three I’s of internet, identity, and inclusion as they intersect with transformational social media and, indeed, impact human lives. Interrogating assumptions of racial privilege embedded in structures of media use also entails revisiting the limits of Media Studies, a post WW2 discipline that has fragmented into a multi-paradigm field without coming to terms with its own fraught history. This artistic engagement has resulted in algorithmic theatre, bot art, and algorithmic media and performance art of various kinds that thematise the dissemination and deployment of algorithms in everyday life. Especially striking is the high volume of artistic engagements with facial recognition algorithms, trading algorithms and search engine algorithms over the past few years. The fact that these three types of algorithms have garnered more responses than other types of algorithms suggests that they form a popular subject of artistic critique. This critique addresses several significant, supra-individual anxieties of our decade: socio-political uncertainty and polarisation, the global economic crisis and cycles of recession, and the centralisation and corporatisation of access to online information. However, the constituents of these anxieties — which seem to be central to our experience of algorithmic culture — are rarely interrogated. They, therefore, merit closer attention. This dissertation uses prominent artistic representations of facial recognition algorithms, trading algorithms, and search algorithms as the entry point into an exploration of the constituents of the anxieties braided around these algorithms. It proposes that the work of Søren Kierkegaard—one of the first theorists of anxiety—helps us to investigate and critically analyse the constituents of ‘algorithmic anxiety’. Dear colleagues, I hope you are all doing well. I have two new articles out that might be of interest to those of you researching issues of identity politics, migration and public diplomacy in relation to digital media. They both draw on an ethnographic study, and explore (from different perspectives) roles of intended public and social surveillance on social media. Destigmatisation strategies of Serbian Londoners on social media looks at banal expressions of nationalism and cosmopolitanism among Serbian Londoners on social media, and shows how cosmopolitanism can (paradoxically) reproduce national identities. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1527476420918384 'Globalised difference': identity politics on social media develops a new concept to refer to this emerging subtle and spontaneous identity politics, greatly brought about by social surveillance on social media, that seeks to reassert national identity and present it as both cosmopolitan and an exotic difference. Call for Papers: Building the Post-Pandemic University In a matter of months, the world has changed beyond recognition. Covid-19 has led to an unprecedented reorganisation of everyday life, with half the world’s population subject to lockdown measures at the peak of governmental response to the pandemic. These measures are being eased across the world, with uncertain and worrying consequences in the continued absence of the vaccine which would herald a potential resolution of the current situation. In its continued absence we face the necessity of institutionalising what has been called ‘social distancing’ but is perhaps better described as ‘physical distancing’, given the capacity of digital platforms to facilitate social interaction without the co-presence which is still frequently seen as its defining characteristic. The impending arrival of the forthcoming academic year means we urgently need to grapple with what this crisis means for the future of the university. How will higher education be transformed by lockdown and social distancing? What university do we hope to work within after this crisis? What contribution should we make to building this post-pandemic university? The current operations of the university are reliant on the affordances of digital platforms and this seems likely to grow in the coming years, even if some face to face meetings resume in the name of blended learning and research capacity. This includes digital platforms like Microsoft Teams and Zoom being incorporated into the core operations of the university in a manner which is likely to be difficult to unwind at a later date, as much as it has served a clear purpose in the present crisis. For this reason it’s essential we begin to incorporate the socio-technical into our established accounts of higher education, opening up the ‘black box’ in order to understand the role played by technology in building the post-pandemic university. However while we see digital technology as playing a crucial role in response to this crisis, the questions which the sector faces are much more than technical ones. Our intention is to facilitate a conversation which bridges theory and practice, analysis and intervention, animated by a shared concern about what this crisis means for the university and how we ought to respond to it. If we want to understand the challenges facing higher education, it is imperative this encompasses the range of potential responses to these difficulties and the interests and ideals served by these for the multitude of groups who will play a part in building the post-pandemic university. We hope this will be a broad and multifaceted conversation which brings together multidisciplinary expertise engaging with an eclectic range of topics rotating around the core problematic of ‘building the post-pandemic university’. We imagine this would include themes such as: - The built environment of the campus and how it is likely to change - The enactment of social distancing across the university’s activities - The impact of the pandemic on racialised, classed and gendered injustice - The implications of these changes for equality & diversity within the university - The impact of Covid-19 on the challenge of climate change - The search for new markets and products by education investors - The public role of the university and transition out of the crisis - Equality and diversity in the post-pandemic university - The geo-politics of Covid-19 and its relationship to global higher education - The challenge of academic mobility and the potential demise of the global conference circuit - The surveillance architecture inherent in the turn towards platforms - Labour relations during the crisis and what this means for the post-pandemic university - These are only suggestions and we welcome contributions on any topic which speaks to the broader theme of building the post-pandemic university, particularly if they also contribute to a broader exercise of mapping out the contours of the present crisis and possible transitions from it. We aim to inform contributors of acceptance by August 10th for an online conference due to take place at a date to be confirmed in September 2020.
