Dear AoIRists, cc. to Maura Conway, Our colleagues at the VOX-POL project, headed by Maura Conway, have recently gathered a page of "Researcher Resources" - "a directory of tools, datasets, events and other useful links, which are collected and grouped by topic." This is a very valuable collection indeed, including, e.g., a library of resources, datasets and tools, and so on. Allow me to particularly call attention to the first subset on ethics, which includes both the AoIR and NESH guidelines - as well as more specific reports and resources developed and taken up over the course of the venerable VOX-POL project. [In the name of full disclosure, both I and Elizabeth Buchanan served as ethics advisors to the project.] A second subset focuses on "Researcher Welfare 1: Privacy and Security." A defining thematic in the 3.0 revisions of the AoIR ethics guidelines is precisely the rising importance of "protecting the researcher." I think we made a good start in collecting resources for doing so - some of which are also included here: but the additional resources listed here will be very valuable indeed for researchers needing to take ever greater care against becoming a target of the researched. Finally, a third subset is on Researcher Well-Being - also invaluable. CFP: #DLFteach Toolkit 2.0 on Immersive Technologies in Higher Education

The DLF Digital Library Pedagogy <https://wiki.diglib.org/Pedagogy> group invites all interested digital library pedagogy practitioners to contribute to an immersive technologies centered #DLFteach Toolkit, an online, open resource focused on lesson plans and concrete instructional strategies. Further information about the scope and planned work scheduled is found below. We welcome practitioners from all digital library settings, roles, and career stages. Experience is less important than the willingness to be involved in the process of creating this resource. DLF Teach Toolkit 1.0 has been published online and is available for view<https://dlfteach.pubpub.org/toolkit>. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, both the deadlines for contributor submissions to this toolkit and the publishing workflow will progress on a rolling basis. We seek to coordinate a collection of instructional resources that recognizes and reflects the diversity of context and practice within this broad, emerging field. We take as models for the DLF Teach Toolkit the popular Library Instruction Cookbook (eds. Sittler and Cook) and Critical Library Pedagogy Handbook (eds. Pagowsky and McElroy). We plan to adopt a template for submissions, as modeled by the Collections as Data Facets<https://collectionsasdata.github.io/facets/> project. We envision that contributions will be lesson-plan like: while they won't necessarily be full lesson plans, they should focus on providing examples of instructional goals and activities that can be put into practice. We hope to encourage collaborations that connect participants with new areas of expertise, especially between practitioners of different levels of experience in different areas. Prospective contributors may elect individual authorship, form their own collaborative pairs or groups, or request to be paired with a collaborator of complementary interest by an Editor. Authors will be connected with a Section Editor who will facilitate the process. Theme The #DLFteach Toolkit 2.0 will focus on lesson plans to facilitate disciplinary and interdisciplinary work engaged with 3D technology. For our purposes, 3D technology includes, but is not limited to Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies, 3D modeling software, and 3D game engines, as well as 3D printers and extruders. This proposal builds on the Immersive Pedagogy symposium, which was organized by 2017-19 CLIR postdoctoral fellows. Immersive Pedagogy: 3D Technology Teaching and Learning Symposium for Humanities Practitioners<https://events.library.cmu.edu/immersive-pedagogy/> was held at Carnegie Mellon University on June 26-27, 2019 assembling practitioners representing libraries, academic departments, and professionals who developed teaching materials for 3D/VR/AR, through interactive workshops. The workshops aimed to produce materials that are shareable with a broader audience, including syllabi and lesson plans, as well as templates that could be adapted in a variety of pedagogical settings. 3D technology, while becoming affordable for institutions in the past few years, is often adopted without a clear and responsible plan for pedagogical use. The symposium tackled challenges and affordances of critical teaching materials for immersive pedagogy. We invite further contributions for the #DLFteach Toolkit that aim to be attentive to decolonial methodologies, intersectionality, accessibility, and other critical/humanistic contexts in presenting practical applications of technology for scholarship and pedagogy. Examples of Contributions * An introduction to building 3D/AR/VR environments for use in the Humanities classroom * A multi-session outline or description of embedded approach to combining archival research with a project in immersive technology * Activities to critically evaluate a digital resource in 3D (accessibility, decolonial theory, representation of underrepresented people and histories, or through other theoretical lenses) * Lesson plans using less expensive forms of immersive technology like phone-based headsets * Critical 3D digital humanities methods that incorporate intersectional feminist and decolonial approaches * Exercise that has students work with underrepresented archives to develop ideas for digital projects that highlight the lives and histories of women and people of color * Lesson plans or resources for rapid response online pedagogy (transitioning the face-to-face course to an online course that uses immersive pedagogy) * Models for augmenting traditional face-to-face courses with immersive elements and components. * Best practices for creating immersive components of museum exhibits * A workshop on creating or using immersive technology for community histories and archives * Combining archival research with a 3D digital project to enhance learning and accessibility * Creating critical 3D digital exhibits or archives * Discussion assignments to critically evaluate the claim that immersive technology can act as an 'empathy machine' * Matching tools and methods with learning goals * Critical information literacy and critical digital library pedagogy * Universal design principles and learner-centred teaching strategies for immersive technology * Creating immersive technology in languages other than English Chris J. L. Cullen, and Christopher Persaud Live streaming is a rapidly growing phenomenon that is having profound effects on the contemporary landscape of digital media, entertainment, and online culture. Across the internet, live streaming takes an array of forms: from gaming-focused sites like Twitch and Mixer, where millions of viewers watch live video gameplay, to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube, where streamers translate their day-to-day lives into broadcasts. As with all technological platforms, live streaming is deeply shaped by (and also itself actively shapes) broader cultural issues. This edited volume will take an interdisciplinary approach to the study of cultural issues in live streaming. Examples of topic areas include but are not limited to: identity, community, power, access, aesthetics, gender, sexuality, race, disability, discrimination, harassment, politics, and activism. While important fundamental work on live streaming has been done by game studies scholars like T. L. Taylor, Mia Consolvo, and Will Partin (among many others), this collection will expand that research to a broader network of questions around the relationship between live streaming and society. We understand live streaming to encompass many forms of real-time broadcasting online—such as “Just Chatting” streams on Twitch, social eating on YouTube, live music on Facebook, webcam modeling on MyFreeCams, as well as video and analog gameplay. Scholars, methods, and perspectives from across disciplines are all welcome, as long as they are rooted in the cultures, human experiences, and histories that surround live streaming. Contributions from non-academics, including streamers and community organizers, are also encouraged. Contributions may take one of the following general formats: - Academic article written for an interdisciplinary audience. Accessible writing is appreciated. - First-person account of experiences with streaming or streaming communities. - Q&A-style interview with live streamers or others involved in live streaming cultures. - Research- or experience-based call to action, such as arguments for new approaches to design, community management, or platform policy. A good way to respond to a query from a student about activism?

Dear AOIRers, I wanted to ask this great list a question for our times. See the message below from a student I taught in an online social media and society course, in which we had a module on #BlackLivesMatter. Can you think of a better way to respond than just with a list of campus groups and a note that I was impressed that she wanted to commit to activism for her beliefs? That's what I did, but I'd like to help a bit more because it's heartening both to see students wanting to put their scholarship into action. Thanks in advance. BTW, I asked her if I could ask the list and she said that was great. Here is her message: As a young black woman, I am struggling to cope with all that is happening in our country right now. Looking at social media I am further saddened to see images of Black men being murdered and their deaths reposted and reposted for all to see. I fear people will become desensitized to these images and names like George Floyd will just become another hashtag and forgotten victim of a corrupt system. *... I was wondering if you had any advice or resources for action beyond social media. I know the Black Lives Matter module discussed the sort of "wind tunnels" we create where like-minded people swirl ideas among mutual followers, but little action is taken beyond likes and retweets. I want to do something that goes beyond liking a post or ranting about it on Twitter. The deadline for the Hawaii International Conference on the System Sciences had been extended to July 15th. The organizers expect to hold the conference on Kauai as planned, as it is known for its interdisciplinary interactions, and add that "if it becomes evident that convening in Kauai is not advisable, we will timely propose an alternate solution to preserve as much as possible the HICSS experience." Papers may address theory, design, practices, use or evaluation of social technologies. "Social networks and communities" refers broadly to social phenomena that may range from fully virtual to geographically based communities, and includes communities of inquiry, interest, or practice; epistemic communities and networked advocacy; as well as other collective phenomena emerging within networks of individuals. In order to leverage the interdisciplinary nature of HICSS and enable dialogue between social and technological disciplines, papers may be motivated by a broad range of theory-driven or data-driven perspectives and methods, including for example but not limited to social network analysis, content analysis, ethnographic investigations, and agent-based simulations. We particularly encourage papers that: • advance our understanding of social network growth, formation, structure and outcomes through social media; • explore how socio-technical affordances relate to social media use and outcomes; • interrogate entanglements of technology and culture in community settings; • examine how information and misinformation spread in social media and networks, and how algorithms, bots, and social media design affect this spread; • evaluate design of social media technologies and practices for effective community development and maintenance; and • develop theories, models and principles of social media design, use and outcomes. Papers that examine how social networking and media are used to take collective action on Covid-19 concerns or mitigate the impact of "social distancing" will be of particular interest this year. ABOUT HICSS The Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, in its 54th year, is one of the longstanding scientific conferences and is highly ranked among information systems conferences. Dear colleagues, The European Society for Social Drug Research (ESSD) is inviting abstract submissions for its 31st Annual Conference from 24-25 September 2020 at the University of Vienna. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be held online. The 31st Annual Conference of the ESSD will focus on a variety of themes including drug related implications of COVID-19, new trends in drug use and digitisation of drug markets. Additionally, there will be presentations on theories and concepts for drug policy. Lastly, methods in drug research and ethical challenges in drug research will be discussed. Presentations should preferably include a European dimension, and/or theoretical analysis that draws inferences from the local to the global.
