The conference remains scheduled for this January on Kauai, but even if conditions forbid travel at that point, the proceedings for HICSS are well cited (the most cited proceedings in the information sciences, according to Google Scholar). L. Cullen, and Christopher Persaud Live streaming is a rapidly growing phenomenon that is having profound effects on the contemporary landscape of digital media, entertainment, and online culture. Across the internet, live streaming takes an array of forms: from gaming-focused sites like Twitch and Mixer, where millions of viewers watch live video gameplay, to social media sites like Facebook and YouTube, where streamers translate their day-to-day lives into broadcasts. As with all technological platforms, live streaming is deeply shaped by (and also itself actively shapes) broader cultural issues. This edited volume will take an interdisciplinary approach to the study of cultural issues in live streaming. Examples of topic areas include but are not limited to: identity, community, power, access, aesthetics, gender, sexuality, race, disability, discrimination, harassment, politics, and activism. While important fundamental work on live streaming has been done by game studies scholars like T. L. Taylor, Mia Consolvo, and Will Partin (among many others), this collection will expand that research to a broader network of questions around the relationship between live streaming and society. We understand live streaming to encompass many forms of real-time broadcasting online such as: Just Chatting streams on Twitch, social eating on YouTube, live music on Facebook, webcam modeling on MyFreeCams, as well as video and analog gameplay. Scholars, methods, and perspectives from across disciplines are all welcome, as long as they are rooted in the cultures, human experiences, and histories that surround live streaming. Contributions from non-academics, including streamers and community organizers, are also encouraged. Contributions may take one of the following general formats: - Academic article written for an interdisciplinary audience. Accessible writing is appreciated. - First-person account of experiences with streaming or streaming communities. - Q&A-style interview with live streamers or others involved in live streaming cultures. - Research- or experience-based call to action, such as arguments for new approaches to design, community management, or platform policy. Abstracts of 300-500 words are due by July 17, 2020 and can be submitted to the contact address above. Authors can expect to hear back regarding abstracts by August 14. Full paper submissions of 3,000 - 5,000 words will be due December 18. Any citation style is acceptable for abstracts. How to calculate survey sample size for multiple social media platforms?

Hello everybody, Hopefully you are all safe and sound. I need to conduct an online survey, which will be handed out through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the website of a local online newspaper. My objective is to reach their audience as a whole, yet I am confused and lost about how to calculate the survey sample size having in consideration that: 1) There are fans from Facebook and followers in Instagram who are the same person (but of course I cannot match them to filter them out); 2) What number should I use as a population in order to calculate the sample size --i.e Facebook fans, Twitter followers, Instagram followers, web page visitors, or a sum of all of those, an average of all of those, should I calculate and therefore run one survey sample size for each platform/source? If you could give me any input/feedback on this I will be very glad. Part of the new Urban Intersections series hosted by Birkbeck, University of London, each speaker will offer an initial set of reflections drawing on work in-progress (abstracts below), followed by a discussion with one another as well as webinar attendees. Invaded, Degenerate, Untraversable: Far Right Political Geographies of the “Western” City (Bharath Ganesh, University of Groningen) In this talk, I will present initial reflections on far right’s political geography of the city, centering on three tropes. First, the far right imagines the city as the front line of an invasion and “replacement” of “native” culture, with images of mosques, of slums, and non-white inhabitants frequently reproduced in digital cultures. Second, the city is constructed as culturally degenerate, dilapidated, and controlled by leftists. Third, often articulated through the trope of the “no-go zone”, the far right’s political geography of the city renders it as untraversable, a space of risk that threatens the safety of white people—particularly women—that seek to travel through it. In presenting reflections on these three tropes of the far right’s political geography of the city, it emerges as a mythical entity that reflects far right anxiety over the supremacy of whiteness in European and North American space. This myth-making is not simply diagnostic; the myth of the city as invaded, degenerate, and untraversable synthesizes a false sense of white victimhood, reconfiguring the right to the city as the demand for the (maintenance of) the inscription of white supremacy in urban space. The Right in the City: From Charlottesville to the Boogaloo Boys and Beyond (Robert Topinka, Birkbeck, University of London) This talk charts a provisional trajectory from the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville to street-fighting Proud Boys in Seattle’s CHAZ and the menacing but ambiguous public appearance of so-called Boogaloo Boys at recent Black Lives Matter protests. Although these reactionary subcultures are typically understood to be ‘extremely online,’ the city looms large in the reactionary imaginary not only as a scene of riotous, unruly black and brown bodies but as a material and embodied site of violent political contestation. I suggest that recent work on platform urbanism has much to offer the study of right-wing extremism. Rather than attempting to categorize these contradictory reactionary phenomena as ‘movements,’ I argue that the recombinatory and modular affordances of platforms shape and circulate protean political affects in digital and urban space. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) communities meet, with contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design, the arts, and more. Our focus is on improving the interaction between humans and digital technology, by leveraging both HCI approaches and state-of-the art AI techniques from machine learning, natural language processing, data mining, knowledge representation and reasoning. ### Why you should submit to ACM IUI While other conferences focus on either the AI or HCI side of this research, we address the complex interaction between the two. We strongly encourage submissions that simultaneously discuss research from both HCI and AI. We also welcome works that focus more on one side or the other, but still highlight the connections between the two. We value papers that contribute methodology or theory for the evaluation of intelligent user interfaces. Digital Sociology seminar series launch

We would like to alert subscribers to the roll out of an ongoing series of discussions hosted by the British Sociological Association's Digital Sociology Study Group. Starting from July 15th 2020, The Digital Sociology Study Group will be hosting monthly discussions, workshops, and book launches with academics, researchers, authors, practitioners, and activists exploring a range of issues around digital sociology. These will be hosted online and available to all who wish to take part. The first session, taking place 13:00 - 13:45 on July 15th, will be a book-launch for ‘Designing the Social: Unpacking Social Media Design and Identity’<https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-981-15-5716-3> written by Harry Dyer, a member of the Digital Sociology Study Group and a Lecturer in Education at the University of East Anglia. This will be a 20 minute introduction to the book from Harry, followed by a Q+A.
