Call for nominations, 2020 ASIS&T SIG SI (Social Informatics) Awards

The *Special Interest Group for Social Informatics* (SIG SI) of the *Association for Information Science and Technology* (ASIS&T) is issuing a *call for nominations* for the 2020 Annual *ASIS&T SIG SI Awards*, with *nominations due by July 10*. Self-nominations are welcome and the nomination process is quite short, as detailed below. For those familiar with our prior awards structure please note there are a few changes this year. We seek nominations in the following two categories: 1. *Best Paper**:* For a paper published either in a *peer-reviewed journal* or in *peer-reviewed conference proceedings*, during the *2019 calendar year*, on a *topic informed by social informatics*. Submissions from all researchers at any career stage are welcomed. The winning author(s) will receive a *$750 (USD) cash award* and be *invited to attend* and have their work recognized at the *Social Informatics Research Symposium* as part of the ASIS&T 2020 Annual Meeting. The Symposium is co-organized by SIG SI, SM (Social Media), and IEP (Information Ethics & Policy) and will be held online later this fall. 2. *Emerging Social Informatics Researchers*: For up to *two students* whose research is on *topics informed by and/or relating to social informatics*. First consideration will go to *students who are an author* on a paper or poster *accepted for the ASIS&T 2020 Annual Meeting *or to the* Social Informatics Research Symposium* to be held as part of the conference. Center on Digital Culture and Society University of Pennsylvania Call for Applications for a Post-doctoral Fellowship The Center on Digital Culture and Society (https://cdcs.asc.upenn.edu/) at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication invites applications to fill one postdoctoral fellowship position for the 2020-2021 academic year. Applications are welcomed from scholars who have received their Ph.D. or equivalent degrees in the last three years. The term of appointment is: September 1, 2020 – August 31, 2021. Founded in July 2019, the Center on Digital Culture and Society (CDCS) supports critical, interdisciplinary scholarship on digital culture, technology, and society. CDCS aims to develop critical approaches to digital cultural studies and create spaces for dialogue and collaboration among academics, citizens, and activists. CDCS postdoctoral fellowships support research on all aspects of digital culture and society which fall within CDCS’s broad mission. Fellows at the CDCS pursue their own research and participate in the activities of the Center. This fellowship comes with a stipend of $75,000, a $3,000 research fund, and health insurance. In addition to research, responsibilities of this fellowship include managing the CDCS website, the speakers series, workshops, and other CDCS office and academic activities. The impact of online platform transparency of information on consumers’ choices

However, the presentation of search results, transparency about contractual parties and the publication of user reviews that contribute to the value of online platforms in Europe's Single Digital Market also pose significant risks regarding consumer protection and market competition. The current study investigates how enhanced information transparency in online platforms might affect consumers’ trust in online activities and choice behaviour. Following an exploratory qualitative study, three online discrete-choice experiments were conducted with representative samples of 1200 respondents in each of four countries: Germany, Poland, Spain and the UK. The objective of the experiments was to test whether increased transparency in the presentation of online search information, details of contractual entities and the implications for consumer protection and user reviews and ratings would affect consumers’ choices. The results show that increased online transparency increases the probability of product selection. A comparison across the four countries found that the similarities in responses to online transparency were far greater than the differences. The findings are discussed in relation to the biases and heuristics identified in behavioural science. In conclusion, recommendations are made to increase online transparency, which the empirical evidence of this study shows would benefit both users and platform operators. ----------------------------------- Giuseppe A. Dear colleagues The Vitalities Lab, UNSW Sydney, has developed two open access resources concerning research methods that may be of interest to some of you. These are specifically designed for teaching and learning purposes. Dear colleagues, Please see the Call for Participation below for the 16th Annual Social Informatics Research Symposium - Sociotechnical Change Agents: ICTs, Sustainability, and Global Challenges: https://easychair.org/cfp/SI-2020 <https://easychair.org/cfp/SI-2020> Aligning with the theme of the 2020 ASIS&T Annual Meeting, Special Interest Group Social Informatics (SIG SI) will hold its 16th annual symposium in conjunction with SIG Social Media (SIG SM) and SIG Information Ethics and Policy (SIG IEP), allowing for ASIS&T members to better discuss how we might work collaboratively as “change agents actively addressing society’s grand challenges” (ASIS&T, 2020). This two-part pre-conference workshop will investigate how research and practice focused on the interaction of people, technology, and society may support social change, including addressing the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations, 2015). We are seeking paper and panel proposals and brief poster proposals that consider the use of ICTs (e.g., traditional technologies, computer/networking systems, mobile and pervasive devices, social media platforms, data analytics, and artificial intelligence) in relation to addressing any societal “grand challenges,” including sustainability efforts. We are also interested in broader research in social informatics, social media, and information ethics and policy that considers the social and technical aspects of using ICTs. We additionally welcome practitioners from business sectors, ICT communities, and human rights organizations. Submissions may include empirical, critical and theoretical work, as well as practice cases and demonstrations. Some topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Digital equity and the digital divide Sustainability and environmental concerns in ICT manufacturing Human rights to information and technology Equitable and/or sustainable information and knowledge systems Sustainable data protection, storage, and/or privacy AI for change and/or sustainable development ICTs and social change movements Big data approaches to supporting social change and/or sustainability Automation and sustainable job markets Using ICTs to address and/or discuss social challenges (e.g., misinformation spread, spam/bot/cyberbullying detection, health support communities, political analysis of social media) Sociotechnical approaches to supporting the U.N.’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Implications and social influence of ICT design We encourage submissions in the form of extended abstracts (1,000–2,000 words, including references) that either propose a panel discussion or present work in these topic areas. We additionally encourage the submission of virtual poster proposals (500 words) for works in progress and early research ideas. Rather than taking a “paper presentation” approach, participants will be encouraged to present their work during breakout discussions using methods adapted from participatory design (Simonsen & Robertson, 2013), thereby allowing them to not only share their own work and ideas but to generate meaningful synthesis and new collaborations. We will organize submissions into themes and focus areas, so that participants may discuss their related work together in more detail during the workshop breakout sessions.
