Books specifically for student engagement and multi-modal learning in distance learning?

Hi all, As everyone is racing to prep distance-learning materials (we in Sweden are a few weeks behind in this), I'm inquiring if anyone has good book resources that cover student engagment and multi-modal exercises for distance learning? For in-person teaching, I utilize these books, which provide a sense of what i'm looking for, but in distance teaching (note the below links will take you to Google Sweden, but the info should be in english still): 1. Does anyone have examples of these, but for distance learning? (Of course, with some time and effort, these books can be tailored to distance learning). 2nd, multi-modal might be similar to having students writing a blog post after a distance learning lecture/meeting, and then recording a "diary" post reflective about the blog writing (issues of privacy, legality are obvious here, but mentioned purely as an example). I send my regards to all those freaking out and working extra long hours in attempts to create nurturing, inspiring digital classrooms for thier students. This article is a contribution to critically theorising the changes societies have undergone in the light of the coronavirus crisis. It asks: How have everyday life and everyday communication changed in the coronavirus crisis? How does capitalism shape everyday life and everyday communication during this crisis? Section 2 focuses on how social space, everyday life, and everyday communication have changed in the coronavirus crisis. Section 3 focuses on the communication of ideology in the context of coronavirus by analysing the communication of coronavirus conspiracy stories and false coronavirus news. The coronavirus crisis is an existential crisis of humanity and society. It radically confronts humans with death and the fear of death. This collective experience can on the one hand result in new forms of solidarity and socialism or can on the other hand, if ideology and the far-right prevails, advance war and fascism. Political action and political economy are decisive factors in such a profound crisis that shatters society and everyday life. Advice for Converting to Online Conference Format during Covid Crisis

Hello AIRers I recently attended an in person conference and am looking for advice on how to convert aspects of a face to face conference to an online format. This list may be able to offer some advice or references. In terms of software applications, My experience with hosting classes so far has been with Zoom, and I am familiar with Webex and other applications but have no experience being a host on them. Conference components under consideration 1) Panelist Presentations -This is the easiest component that can be done online 2) Discussant feedback -Also achievable online 3) Audience Q&A -Achievable with a moderator I lose track of the order of the students asking questions in class more often online than in person classes 4) Poster sessions -Can be replicated as a repeated slide presentation with content from poster 5) Formal networking sessions -Difficult to replicate online, any ideas? 6) Table discussion e.g. at a dinner or conference banquet -Difficult to replicate online, any ideas? DiscoverText is looking for academic host institutions. If your university has the cloud credits to spare on AWS or Azure, we have the code and experience to run the system for your institution. These are very difficult times. This is no time to shut off tools that scholars and students need to collaborate on research across time and space. If your university can move quickly to reach an agreement to host it for a year or two, then you can use it free of any license fee. Please contact me directly once you find the VP of Technology with control over the distribution of cloud credits for distance research and education. The first three institutions to fully sign off to implement the proposal outlined here in any country (excluding past customers) can have an Enterprise site license for free for two years. Academics have used DiscoverText to conduct research in more than 30 languages. We want to preserve the work of 13 years spent engineering a system for collecting, searching, filtering, clustering, labeling, and machine-classifying data. Indeed, some have already done so. Recently ‘Mindar’, the android version of the Buddhist deity Kannon Bodhisattva, has been introduced in a Buddhist Temple in Kyoto, while both Catholic and Protestant contexts have seen such inventions as SanTO and BlessU2 respectively. While roboticists have started producing ‘theomorphic robots’ to represent and mediate the divine, there is a great need to join this effort with theoretical, ethical and theological discussion. This is exactly what this workshop takes aim at, and a main priority to this end - in the spirit of the conference theme - would be to identify values and theological aims of religious communities that social robots should be developed, tested and introduced in compliance to. TOPICS AND AIMS This workshop invites contributions from developers of theomorphic robots along with robot ethicists, philosophers of religion, and theologians to discuss empirical findings from experiments with theomorphic robots as well as theoretical aspects of social robots in religious contexts. The workshop aims to reflect on how theomorphic robots and robotic technologies in general can be developed for faith communities to comply with and perhaps enhance values and theological aims local to that community. The workshop invites contributions on: • Critical research on representing the divine in robotic technology. • Exploration on which functions and roles social robots might fill in religious contexts without replacing humans. • Identifying theological aims of specific faith communities that social robots might contribute to. • What anthropomorphic robot-building says about our conceptions of being human within religious contexts – including attention to central themes of identity, selfhood, authority, communal life, ritual, and so on. • Social robots in pedagogical and catechistic perspectives. • Automation in devotional life. FORMAT The workshop will run two legs of 3-4 presentations of 20 minutes (including 5-10 minutes for questions), depending on the final number of accepted speakers. The DC provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers from the field. Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. Students are expected to document in a brief submission their doctoral research (see below described submission information for further details), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected for presentation at a Doctoral Consortium Session as part of the conference. Promising, but less well- developed applications will be selected for presentation at a poster session. SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCESS ============================ To apply for the ACM UMAP 2020 doctoral consortium, students should submit a paper presenting their doctoral research organized under the following headings: - Research Problem. The problem being addressed and a motivation outlining the relevance of the problem; - Related Work. Work already performed by other researchers related to this problem. This should situate your work, showing your knowledge of the relevant previous work and how your work will make a new contribution; - Research Questions and Proposed Approach. The main questions the PhD project aims to answer, contributions it aims to achieve, and the thesis methodology; - Progress to Date and Future Work. The progress made to date (including a clear description of the approach, methodology and preliminary results) as well as the plan for further research. Topics include (but are not limited to) the ACM UMAP 2020 key areas. Each DC submission should cover: identification of related (state of the art) work, indication of the potential innovation, application or advancement of the state-of-the-art that the work intends to achieve. In addition, as appropriate for the PhD project, each submission may cover: indication of data to be used for experimentation, indication of implementation approach, indication of evaluation criteria and experimental design. Each DC paper submission should be accompanied by a cover page that states: the paper title, name of the PhD candidate, the name of his/her supervisor(s) and University, a paragraph describing the stage they are in the PhD programme, together with a brief description of their background. This will enable the committee to adapt its assistance to each student. The DC will be most useful to students who have completed enough of their thesis work to have a solid foundation with a clear topic and literature review but the student should be early enough in their studies to still benefit from guidance and advice.
