This recent development brings significant research interests on the interplay between mobile communications networks, mobile computing and social networks. Due to its increasing prevalence and interdisciplinary nature, social networks have also attracted research attentions to a number of related technical areas, including blockchain, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, big data analytics, data mining, information security and privacy protection. This track aims to provide a forum that brings together scientists and researchers from academia, industry, and government to present their cutting-edge innovations in all aspects of the field. Papers on practical applications and R&D results from industry and academic/industrial collaborations are encouraged. Such tasks are commonly related to user authentication, human interaction proofs (e.g., captcha), privacy and security pop-up dialogs, setting privacy and security features within online user profiles, etc. Recent privacy and security incidents of famous online services have once more underpinned the necessity towards further investigating and improving current approaches and practices related to the design of efficient and effective privacy and security. In order to achieve this objective, one possible direction is related to providing adaptive and personalized characteristics to privacy- and security-related user tasks, given the diversity of the user characteristics (like cultural, cognitive, age, habits), the technology (like standalone, mobile, mixed-virtual-augmented reality, wearables) and interaction contexts of use (like being on the move, social settings, spatial limitations). Hence, adaptive and personalized privacy and security implies the ability of an interactive system or service to support its end-users, who are engaged in privacy- and/or security-related tasks, based on user models which describe in a holistic way what constitutes the user's physical, technological and interaction context in which computation takes place. APPS 2020 aims to bring together researchers and practitioners working on diverse topics related to understanding and improving the usability of privacy and security software and systems, by applying user modeling, adaptation and personalization principles. Our special focus in 2020 will be on healthcare systems, more specifically on ensuring security and privacy of medical data in smart patient-centric healthcare systems. The workshop will address the following objectives: - increase our understanding and knowledge on supporting usable privacy and security interaction design through novel user modeling mechanisms and adaptive user interfaces; - discuss methods and techniques for understanding user attitudes and perceptions towards privacy and security issues in various application areas; - identify human-centered models for the design, development and evaluation of adaptive and personalized privacy and security systems; - discuss methods for evaluating the impact and added value of adaptation and personalization in privacy and security systems. Dear all, Hope everyone and your loved ones are doing well. As part of a project connected to MisinfoCon <http://misinfocon.com/> and The Carter Center <http://cartercenter.org/>, and also in conversation with the Secretariat at the Forum on Information and Democracy <https://rsf.org/en/news/eleven-organizations-civil-society-create-forum-inf…>, I have been overseeing a landscape review of current practices related to researchers entering into closed messaging spaces (e.g. WhatsApp, Telegram). This landscape review is intended to inform a set of recommended practices related to closed messaging spaces to be developed in conversation among human rights practitioners, election observers, and fact-checking projects. We are seeking protocols and examples of research practices mentioned in papers, in addition to how these efforts define privacy and public discourse; the particular backdrop has been elections but can be broader. Examples of issues that we are focusing on: * how the study defines *public* and *private* * whether the size of the group matters and how * whether and how the researchers identified themselves * what protocols have been defined related to de-identification of participants, limitation of content collected, and the storage around the datasets * whether the study protocol has been reviewed by an IRB or other external organization Should you have recommendations of papers and reports to include, I would love to hear about them here or off-thread. Critiques of Academic Scholarship

Hi everyone, I’m having difficulty finding some literature on critiques of academia. Key words tend to bring up “critical theory” which I’m sure includes this topic somewhere but it’s a pretty large haystack. Ideally, what I’m looking for are performative aspects of writing which create authorized speech, knowledge production, and expertise. Sort of the Archeology of Knowledge or Signature Event Context/Limited Inc. but applied specifically to academic writing. Style, citations, minimization of limitations, peer review, to name a few.
