Some suggest that online work platforms and the so-called 'gig economy' are now planetary in scope, promising access to work for anyone with an internet connection and some skills. However, to what extent does that hold true for the world's refugees? Parallel to this spread of digital opportunities, refugee self-reliance has now become one of the leading mantras in global refugee governance and international development. A plethora of programmes and initiatives have therefore tapped into a pool of digital opportunities for livelihood provision and skills training among displaced persons and host communities. However, their scope, methods, and outcomes remain underexplored in both academia and policy. This special issue will explore the diverse implications of this transformation on refugees, who often face severe restrictions to economic activity, financial inclusion, and a limited right to work. Particular consideration will be given to critical contributions that are rooted in empirical research and offer insights linking important debates in the international development literature on refugee economies, livelihoods, and digital work. Articles might address one of the following questions: What do particular case studies tell us about the unique relationship between forced displacement and digital economies? How does the inclusion of refugees, and a perspective grounded in their experience, change established views on digital economies and the future of decent work? How do digital economies reshape the role of work within increasingly prolonged conditions of forced displacement? What are the risks and opportunities of digital work for refugees? Other themes articles might address may include the following: * Digital refugee livelihoods and the decent work agenda * Digital skills training or remote job-mentoring * Freelancing and online entrepreneurialism * Working conditions and social protection * Informal means of digital work (e.g. social media platforms) * Refugees' involvement in the informal or illicit digital economy * Gender dimensions of digital work * Barriers to digital access and/or financial inclusion * The interaction between host country legal and social environments and digital economies These questions and issues are for guidance only and should not be considered exclusive of other important themes. CfP: Graduate Colloquium on Digital Labour – 27-28 March 2020 – Milan, Italy

The European Network on Digital Labour<http://endl.network/> is an association of scholars working on various aspects of the relationship between work and digital technology. In its desire to integrate young scholars and foster collaborations with senior members, the network will host its third graduate colloquium, set to take place during the 2020 conference “Unboxing AI” in Milan, Italy. The event is co-organized by the Fondazione Feltrinelli with support from the Nexa Center for Internet and Society. Confirmed speakers include Jeremias Adams-Prassl (University of Oxford), Janine Berg (International Labour Organization), Nick Couldry (London School of Economics), Alessandro Delfanti (University of Toronto), Leopoldina Fortunati (University of Udine), Baruch Gottlieb (Berlin University of the Arts), Andrea Miconi (IULM University of Milan), and Phoebe Moore (University of Leicester). The upcoming colloquium welcomes all postgraduate students (master’s & Ph.D.) in different stages of their research who work on any topics related to computer-mediated work, platform economies, online value production, automation, robotics, and tech-enabled outsourcing. It aims to give junior researchers the chance to engage with other scholars working in similar areas of interest, discuss their current projects and methodological issues, and to receive advice on the thesis writing process and career prospects. Please note that, while the registration to the colloquium is free, the network cannot provide funding for travel or accommodation in Milan. The discussants of the doctoral colloquium are Juan Carlos de Martin (Polytechnic University of Turin) and Andrea Fumagalli (University of Pavia). ================================================================================================ REFRESH 2020 1st International Workshop on Real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond - co-located with IEEE DCOSS 2020 ================================================================================================ Scope and Overview: The economic and societal potential of emerging 5G and cyber-physical social systems is vastly greater than what has been realized so far, and major investments are being made worldwide to develop the corresponding science and technology. The Future Internet paradigm, the proliferation of emerging networks and architectures, wireless access technologies and multi-homing smart devices are evolving towards a competitive environment, where users and devices have access to various resources, while their behaviors become strongly interdependent. This fact demands and motivates the development of user-centric resource management and optimization frameworks, which enable user's self-optimization and autonomy. This vision is further motivated and supported by the convergence of various emerging technologies enabling Cyber-Physical Systems operation, including 5G/B5G technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Edge Computing and Software Defined Networking, all targeting flexibility and efficiency. To deal with the involved complexity, and driven by the requirements of autonomy and scalability, distributed resource orchestration approaches appear as a necessity rather than a desire. The REFRESH Workshop aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of real-life modeling in 5G networks and beyond. This year's edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of wireless networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as, but not limited to: mobile edge computing, Internet of Things, cyber-physical systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, public safety networks, dynamic spectrum utilization, smart grid communications, wireless power communication, green wireless networks, information-centric wireless networks. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research and development approaches and results, as well as work-in-progress papers. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for 5G networks and beyond. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Using quantitative as well as qualitative techniques the studies included in the book examine the impact of gender, personality traits, app interface and design, and culture on success and failure in online courtship. Among the issues dealt here are ghosting, sex emoticons, body presentation in the virtual universe, dime dating, religious courtship and more. Amir Hetsroni is a professor in the Department of Media and Visual Arts at Koç University in Turkey. He is the author/editor of four books and nearly 100 journal articles and book chapters. He is also a media celebrity in his home country, Israel, where he takes part in reality shows as a consultant and commentator, and takes an active role in anti-censorship campaigns. He failed to find love in online dating, but did not lose hope. Meriç Tuncez, a PhD candidate in Design, Technology, Society program at Koç University, received his BA in Business Administration from Koç University, and received his M.F.A. in Media and Design from Bilkent University. His research interests span interactions with artificial intelligence and virtual assistants including humanness, mental state, emotion, intention, sociality and morality attributions to artificial intelligence, and online dating. He is also a digital artist and his artworks were included in a recent interdisciplinary exhibition about coincidences called Yaratan Disiplinler: Tesadüfler by Tasarım Atölyesi Kadıköy (TAK) in Istanbul. His first real love was exclusively on the net but later he realized that he was being catfished by that person for the duration of a year.

Call for papers: Robots, recommenders and responsibility: where should the media go with AI? AI-driven tools play an increasingly important role on many levels of the process of making and distributing news. In the field of journalism, this ranges from smart tools that assist journalists in producing their stories to the fully automated production of news stories (robot journalism), and from audience analytics that inform editorial board decisions to the AI-driven recommendation of which contents and users to match. As such, AI-driven tools are more than simple tools. They are part of a more structural transformation of what it means to make news, to engage with the audience, and to be an informed citizen. The integration of AI-driven tools into the journalistic process raises not only a host of challenging professional, technical and organizational questions. Intense debates about filter bubbles, privacy, shifting power dynamics, gatekeeping, editorial independence and the metrification of journalistic values and fundamental rights also touch upon the legal, ethical, societal and democratic implications that the use of AI in the media can have. So far, much of the discussion has centered around social media platforms. But what are the implications of the introduction of AI-driven tools for the legacy media and its role of informing, being a critical watchdog and providing a forum for public debate? What are the implications of the ongoing trend to automatisation for the realisation of public values and fundamental rights? How do new legal frameworks, such as the GDPR or the plans of the EC to regulate AI affect the media? And are the existing journalistic codes and professional principles useful to guide journalists and editors in an age of AI? Symposium The goal of this symposium on 24-25 June 2020 in Amsterdam is to discuss the societal and democratic role of AI-driven tools in the media, the fundamental rights at stake, and the ethical, legal and technological (design) conditions need to ensure that algorithms and AI create opportunities, and not threats for our democracy. This cannot be done from the perspective of one or two disciplines alone. We therefore hope to bring together a community of scholars from journalism and media studies, communication and computer science, law, STS, economics and whoever has an interest to contribute, despite his or her disciplinary affiliations. Together, such a group of scholars could have a true impact on how algorithms and AI can make a difference for the better in media and democracy – for academia and society. We invite papers on, for example: - How journalists, editors and media corporations use AI and algorithms to contribute to, and expand on their editorial mission, for example through news recommenders and robot journalism; - On how the introduction of digital technologies changes our very idea of news, and what it means to be an informed citizen; - Investigations into the shifts of powers, roles and responsibilities, and new gatekeeper positions as a result of the introduction of AI in the journalistic process; - Studies into the way how the use of AI and algorithms in the media affect the ability of citizens to benefit from their right to freedom of expression, to form and hold opinions, and make informed political choices; - How journalistic and public values such as diversity, objectivity, relevance, etc. can be translated and preserved in algorithmic design and routines; - Governance of the use of data, AI and algorithms in the news media; - Proposals on the maintenance of accountability and public oversight over editorial AI, including the roles and responsibilities of different regulatory authorities, but also the role of public institutions in supporting and stimulating technological innovation in the newsmedia; - The influence of different national, cultural and societal contexts for the assessment of above questions. We invite specifically young scholars to send in their work, and also encourage work in progress. Please send in an abstract of 500 words to personews(a)ivir.nl. Important dates: - Deadline for abstracts: 3 February 2020. - Notification of acceptance around 21st of February. - Deadline for the final papers (or advanced draft): 25th of May. - The conference: 24 and 25 of June 2020. We explore the possibility to facilitate the publication of a selection of articles in a (leading) journal. We have deliberately chosen for a small-scale event, with maximal time for discussion and engagement. A selected number of papers will be presented and commented on by one or two commentators, followed by a plenary discussion. Next to presenters and commentators, a limited number of places is available for non-active participants. We have limited travel funds available for those who lack the means to pay for travel to attend the symposium. Please only apply for a travel grant if there is no other way for you to attend the conference. Priority will be given to speakers and commenters. To apply for (partial) refunds of your travel costs, please send a brief justification of the need for financial support, the estimated costs and a declaration that the applicant will not be able to attend without financial support from some source external to their own institution.
