Greetings, A student asked me to provide my opinion on the following questions. Some of these questions are easy to answer but others require independent research inquiry (and data) to answer it. I will appreciate your thoughts and possible responses to these questions, if possible. Or perhaps share some articles which may have answered some of your questions. 1. 2020 Teresa Award for the Advancement of Feminist Scholarship

The Feminist Scholarship Division of International Communication Association seeks: (1) nominees for the Teresa Award for the Advancement of Feminist Scholarship; and (2) volunteers willing to serve on the Teresa Awards Committee to help choose among the nominees. Those wishing to serve on the committee should hold a doctoral degree and have a depth of familiarity with feminist communication scholarship. Service on the committee requires a minimal commitment of time in March after the nominations are in. Please indicate your interest in serving on the Teresa Award Committee by sending an email to the co-chairs of the Teresa Award Committee, Carolyn Byerly (cbyerly(a)earthlink.net<mailto:cbyerly@earthlink.net>) and Natalia Rybas (natrybas(a)gmail.com) Those interested in nominating a feminist scholar for the award should inform co-chairs of the Teresa Award Committee about their intent. The nominating materials should be submitted to the co-chairs no later than March 1, 2020 (EST). The Teresa Award recognizes work from established feminist scholars who have made significant contributions to the development, reach and influence of feminist scholarship in communication and/or media studies. While the FSD awards committee favors research that consists of multiple projects and publications that have made a clear, coherent and sustained contribution to the advancement of feminist scholarship over time, single works and/or activities which have been highly influential in the field of feminist communication scholarship may also qualify someone for nomination. The strongest nominees for this award will have accomplished one or more of the following: (1) opened up new theoretical and/or methodological territory in feminist research; (2) made other important contributions to the advancement of feminist scholarship; and (3) engaged in feminist activism within academia that advanced feminist scholarship. Any scholar who has made significant contributions to shaping the field of feminist communication and media studies may be nominated. They do not have be a member of Feminist Scholarship Division. We encourage self-nominations as well as the nomination by others. In most instances, members of the Teresa Award Committee may not submit nominees for consideration. Nominations should include the following: (1) One letter of nomination, not to exceed two pages. Letters must: (a) provide full name and affiliation of the person being nominated, (b) specify the relevant body of work and/or other contributions made; (c) address the work's and/or activity's contributions to feminist scholarship (in the case of research, this will involve theoretical and methodological assessments); and (d) make a case for its influence and impact on the advancement of feminist scholarship. (2) Current CV of the scholar being nominated. (3) Three representative examples of the work cited, where appropriate. If the example is book length, only the title page, copyright page, table of contents, and one chapter should be sent for that work. 2019 conference schedule?

Dear AoIR-ists, I'm certain I'm missing something obvious - but I'm trying to find a detailed schedule for the 2019 Brisbane conference, in hopes of identifying papers on ethics for possible cultivation and inclusion in some upcoming issues of the Journal of Information, Communication & Ethics in Society (JICES) - and coming up with zilch / nada / zip / nothing. Nothing left on the website. Nothing in my emails - not even an indication of the conference app ... and thanks to a major phone crash a few weeks ago, my phone had to have everything freshly re-installed: oddly, Google Play Store does not have a record of an conference app ... Any tips, tricks, and suggestions for a befuddled old guy? *DEADLINE EXTENDED: APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL JANUARY 3, 2020* Understanding Digital Culture: Humanist Lenses for Internet Research, an NEH-funded Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities to be held June 1-5, 2020 at the University of Central Florida, seeks applications. Understanding Digital Culture aims to increase the number of humanities scholars using digital tools for data collection and analysis in internet research. Drawing on the expertise of an interdisciplinary community of humanities scholars spanning digital humanities, information studies, American studies, fan studies, cultural studies, media studies, and games studies, Understanding Digital Culture will enable sharing ideas and methods for using digital technologies to advance humanities research and teaching. Specifically, we will provide resources, training, and a community of collaborators to engage both computational network and data analysis tools and the ethics and best practices of using the web as a site of research. No previous experience in digital humanities is required to apply, and the workshop sessions are structured to assume no prior knowledge of either the technology or theory in order to allow for the broadest range of participation. Graduate students and early career scholars are especially encouraged to apply, as are faculty and staff at institutions such as HBCUs,Tribal Colleges, and community colleges. All who are selected to participate will receive a stipend of $1,250 to support their attendance at the Institute. 25 places are available. We invite students who feel they would benefit from this kind of feedback on their research to use this unique opportunity to share their work with students in a similar situation. The consortium will be organized with 8 to 12 student presentations selected by the Student Consortium chairs and potentially other reviewers. The strongest candidates will be those who have a clear topic and research approach, and have made some progress, but who are not so far along in their research so that they can still update their research topics or methods. The final version of accepted SC submissions will be included in the main conference proceedings published in the ACM DL. Complimentary/reduced conference registration will be available for students. Katherine Hayles is not only central for her own current work, in which she offers a glimpse in her contribution to the new issue of Interface Critique. It also reflects a main aspect of the issue’s focus: Calling up on the hybridity or interdependency of humans and technology, it criticizes tech ideologies and Californian Narratives which share a premise of “human engineering” – to refer to a term already used in 1965 by K. F. Hywel Murrell, one of the founders of research in human-machine ergonomics.* >From this perspective, current buzz words such as behavioral programming or persuasive technology uncover the powerful bias of research and development in ICT: its assumption that human behavior in technological settings is something to be designed. The critical examination of such a concept of the human – as yet another systemic component – is the focus of this issue, *Navigating the Human*. Rather than to be integrated as an element in functionalistic interface paradigms, the human factor in technology may be conceptualized as resistant moments of subjectification. Since questions of subjective resistance are especially raised by contemporary critical artistic practice, this issue of *Interface Critique* also includes artistic contributions beyond classical scientific paper formats. They are accompanied by contributions from media, art and cultural studies, philosophy, digital humanities and design theory, among other fields. Best, Niki -- Digital⇌Culture 2020 Conference - CALL FOR PAPERS https://digitalcultureconference.wordpress.com/ A one-day conference hosted by the Digital Culture Research Network, and supported by the Midlands4Cities DTP (M4C) Cohort Development Fund Date: Friday 1st May 2020 Venue: University of Nottingham, UK Abstract Submission Deadline: Friday 14th February 2020 The Digital Culture Research Network is pleased to open the call for papers for our third annual conference: ‘Digital⇌Culture 2020’. This year’s theme of ‘Boundaries’ encompasses the varied means by which digital technologies challenge, perpetuate or instantiate margins and limits. Despite the potential to transform notions of accessibility, the embodied realities of digital culture are subject to geopolitical, cultural, or ethical limitations. Digital platforms create new avenues for self-representation, and the boundary between our digital selves and our embodied selves ‘IRL’ are becoming increasingly porous (if they were ever really separate at all). The public/private binary is blurred: these identities can be censored by the platform or the state, and have their data privacy violated. In the era of the “long tail,” concepts of cultural fringes or margins are becoming problematized and objects of academic study shun any designation as “high” or “low” culture. The field of digital cultures also presents new challenges to researchers’ ethical boundaries. Submission For this one-day conference, we invite researchers from a diverse range of disciplines, particularly those early in their careers, to present theoretical and empirical research related, but not limited, to the following topics: -Geopolitical contexts of digital technologies -Methodological and ethical challenges posed by digital culture research -Data privacy and digital surveillance -Creative practice and/in digital technologies -Moderation, censorship and regulation of the Internet -Identity and its digital mediations -Embodiment and the Digital -Digital trash, junk and rubbish -Changing digital research practice In order to encourage proposals from doctoral researchers, up to 12 joint-travel/accommodation grants are available to be awarded to successful proposals. Submissions should follow the format below and be submitted to digitalcultureconference(a)gmail.com by 23:00 GMT on Friday 14th February 2020. -Paper Title -Speaker Name -Speaker Contact Email -Abstract (up to 250 words outlining the paper's main arguments, methods, and relevance to the conference theme) -Speaker Biography (up to 100 words) -Keywords (3 terms relevant to the paper) Funding This year, we are pleased to offer the following grant opportunities: A. 10 grants of one night’s accommodation and £50 towards travel This grant is open to all doctoral applicants, but at least five of the grants are reserved for non-M4C-funded applicants based at one of the DTP’s eight institutions: -University of Nottingham -Nottingham Trent University -Birmingham City University -University of Birmingham -De Montfort University -University of Leicester -University of Warwick -Coventry University Those currently funded by M4C are not eligible to apply for this grant. B. 2 grants of one night’s accommodation and £100 towards travel These two grants are specifically reserved for international researchers in order to facilitate them with the higher cost of coming from abroad to present a paper at the conference. Both grants will only be offered to doctoral students whose papers have been accepted for the conference.
