Job Title: Assistant Professor, Digital Curation and Preservation, (TE) Posting Number: F22120 Job Description: The School of Information at the University of Arizona seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a record of research in digital curation and preservation to begin in mid-August, 2020. We are especially interested in candidates who are well-versed in quantitative methodologies, those with interest in academic leadership roles (e.g., program supervision, student advising), and/or those who bring a record of working on interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary funded grant teams. We welcome all candidates working within digital curation, but are especially interested in candidates with any of the following expertise: • Curation and management of scientific and research data • Digital preservation infrastructures, systems, or tools • Cyberinfrastructures • Digital archives • Archives, access, and preservation with historically marginalized communities • Impact of digitization and digital access • Access systems, aggregation, and linked open data • Computational techniques in analyzing archival collections This position will include teaching responsibilities at both undergraduate and graduate levels and across online and face to face formats. The successful applicant will have ideally developed a strong track record of excellence in teaching and academic citizenry. The School of Information is an academic department and a professional school in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona, the state’s only public land grant university. emotion detection machines - round 2

Dear AoIRists, First of all, many thanks again to everyone who contributed suggestions and critical comments regarding emotion detection machines. My student settled on Senpy, despite important criticisms and limitations, and is now in a second phase of analysis. The student is collecting emotional analyses of both primary posts and comments. Primary posts range around 800 - comment posts are ca. 7000. The student went through the primary posts, and found that Senpy misread a post ca. 20% of the time, e.g., Senpy's analysis of a post might be "sadness," but when read in context, the emotional response was clearly happiness. Query: what is there to do, if anything, with Senpy's analysis of the 7000+ comment posts? It is not possible for the student to do the same process of manually cleaning the data. So: does the student just take up the results as they are, assuming that there will likely be a 20% error rate and simply accept that as a limit to the method / analysis? Or: ??? I can't think of a good way forward here (no surprise: my PhD was on Kant ...) - so I'm hoping very likely many AoIRists will have one or more good solutions or suggestions. Work is increasingly shaped by technologies such as platforms and algorithmic systems, which standardize and reorganize the labour process, incorporate managerial tasks, and devise new forms of value generation. By decomposing or outsourcing jobs, technologies are being used to make workers increasingly replaceable. New surveillance techniques are used to control and discipline workers, and new forms of despotism in the digital workplace are on the rise. But workers don’t passively obey the rules of the digital economy. In recent years, repertoires of tactics inherited from the industrial era have been revived, adapted, and extended by digital workers to fuel new struggles in the contemporary economy. Look no further than drivers in the ride-hailing industry in the streets of the world, domestic workers and freelancers in North America and Asia, food-delivery couriers in Europe and Canada, warehouse workers in urban peripheries across the globe, software engineers from China to California, and game designers and other digital media workers in cities across North America. The ubiquitous penetration of digital technologies in warehouses, workshops, offices, and app-based workplaces is met with novel workarounds and solidarity-building techniques. Both overt organizing and covert resistance connect workers in traditional sectors like hospitality as well as in booming industries such as logistics, online crowdwork, or the urban gig economy. Scholars from multiple disciplines and labour activists have started to shape the debate around digital worker struggle, but questions remain: What are the new challenges and potentials brought about by the new wave of autonomous decision-making technologies? Which new forms of class composition boost solidarity and organizing in the digitally-mediated work environment? What roles do technologies, cultures, geographies, and infrastructures play in worker organizations? How can tactical media be deployed towards workers’ goals? How do workers log out from or subvert digital labour? Building on the success of the 2018 edition, Log Out! 2 brings together critical research on how workers from different sectors of digital capitalism across the world confront, negotiate, and disrupt the technologically-mediated conditions of work that structure and mediate their lives. We are interested in both empirical and theoretical contributions that address worker organizing and unionization, strikes, work refusal, algorithm hacking, tactical interventions, as well as the material and political economic components of resistance. Worker knowledge is critical to understanding labour politics: we welcome contributions from members of worker collectives and labour unions. Dear colleagues, I hope this email find you well! I am the Director of the Information Warfare Working group at Stanford, as well as a social psychologist with expertise in social influence and digital media. I also edit an interdisciplinary ICT journal (linked below). As the editor, I’ve decided I want to put out a call for a special issue on Disinformation and Digital Media and want to recruit a junior scholar or two to co-edit the special issue with. So, I am reaching out to see if any of you are interested in working with me on this special issue. Full disclosure – my journal is not a top tier journal but it’s an opportunity to learn more about the publication process. My plan is to work with and mentor the guest editors so that it can be a positive learning experience as well and an opportunity to disseminate research on this important issue that is plaguing our world.
