Propose a session about research for Wikimania 2019!
by Benj. Mako Hill 11 May '19

11 May '19

Greetings! You might have already seen an announcement for Wikimania (the Wikipedia and Wikimedia's community annual conference). It will be hosted in Stockholm this year on August 14-18. This year the conference is broken down into a series of tracks called "spaces." Along with Leila Zia from the Wikimedia Foundation, I'm helping running a space focused on research. We're interested in talks about research (or about how to do research) on Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and open collaboration more broadly. I've pasted in a call for proposals for the Research Space below. The conference is a great way to connect both with other researchers and with the Wikipedia and Wikimedia communities of contributors and leaders. Please submit a proposal! Regards, Mako Call for Sessions Proposals about Research @ Wikimania 2019 =========================================================== Wikimania: The Conference of the Wikipedia and Wikimedia Community Stockholm, Sweden | August 14-18, 2019 Submission Deadline: June 1, 2019 Research Space website: https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Research General Conference website: https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/ About the Conference & Research Space ------------------------------------- Wikimania is the annual conference of the Wikimedia community. In 2019, Wikimedia is being managed as a series of largely independent "spaces" (similar to tracks). This call for papers is only for the Research Space. The Research Space will host talks that showcase research of interest to the broader Wikimedia community as well as tutorials focused on helping people do research in Wikipedia. We are particularly interested in submissions that aim to: - Present actionable research projects by people conducting research on Wikimedia projects and in adjacent spaces (either completed or in-progress); - Provide tutorials to help Wikimedians and researchers learn to use a series of useful tools for collecting and analyzing data from Wikimedia projects; - Provide a space to discuss issues related to doing research in Wikimedia projects. Proposing a Session ------------------- The research space is actively encouraging submissions for three types of sessions: - Presentations of Research - Tutorials - Research Lightning Talks We encourage submissions from researchers studying Wikimedia projects, researchers studying adjacent projects (e.g., peer production projects like OSM, etc), Wikimedia community members, and members of the WMF research team. We are particularly interested in work that touches on issues related to the UNDP SDGs (e.g., quality education, reduced inequalities, industry innovation and infrastructure). Wikimania is a community conference. We will not be publishing a proceedings. We welcome presentation of either completed or in-progress work. The research space welcomes submissions on any topic related to Wikimedia research. Examples of topics we would welcome include: - Participation in Wikimedia communities - Group Dynamics and Organization in Wikipedia and related projects - Readership/Engagement on Wikipedia and related projects - Technical Infrastructure and Design in Wikimedia projects - Evaluating Content of Wikimedia projects - Knowledge Diffusion, Outreach, and work that seeks to generalize beyond Wikimedia projects We also welcome submissions on these or other topics in "adjacent spaces" including free culture, free software, open hardware, open knowledge, and so on. Submissions are due on June 1, 2019. Conference Organization and Questions ----------------------------------------------------- The Research Space leaders are: - Benjamin Mako Hill (University of Washington) — makohill(a)uw.edu - Leila Zia (Wikimedia Foundation) — leila(a)wikimedia.org All questions about submissions should be emailed to the space leaders or a message can be asked publicly on the public Research Space discussion page which is available at the link above. -- Benjamin Mako Hill https://mako.cc/academic/ Creativity can be a social contribution, but only in so far as society is free to use the results. --GNU Manifesto

Yet the online world and complex algorithms that drive, direct, and govern children’s experiences have not been constructed with their needs and interests in mind. Children represent an especially marginalized and vulnerable population who are exposed to high levels of poverty and inequality, while being dependent on adults to structure their experiences and opportunities. Big tech and policy makers have a responsibility to consider the rights and needs of children. Instead, the burden is most often placed on families, educators, and community leaders to understand, support, guide, and regulate children’s access to media, information, and social connection. > > While a growing body of research has shed light on how algorithms can reinforce racism, sexism, ableism, and other forms of injustice and inequality, studies of algorithmic justice and required protections for children are still sparse. If left unattended, children’s digital experiences will continue to diverge, with privileged children reaping the benefits that do exist, while vulnerable and lower-income children experience the ill effects of an algorithmic world. The science of child and youth development is typically left out of technology design and policy considerations. Commercial incentives to build a healthy and equitable Internet for kids are low. Well-meaning data policies and parent strategies intended to protect children have resulted in curtailing the rights of children and creating barriers for the less advantaged and for children who lack advocates and mentors to guide their online activities. > > This special issue invites both empirical and conceptual papers from diverse perspectives that explore different facets of this emerging area of inquiry. We also welcome submissions from children and young people. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: > > • Implications of children’s engagement with online platforms, conversational agents, and interactive toys > > • Family dynamics around media management and engagement > > • Analysis of data and AI ethics and policy that implicate children > > • Challenges and risks in designing algorithms and platforms for children > > • Innovative designs and solutions for algorithmic justice, learning, equity, and wellness for children > > • Design processes that involve children and families and attend to the wellbeing and the flourishing of children > > • Paradigms and structures to provide appropriate incentives to produce better outcomes for children > > • Levers and strategies for intervention into existing systems and products to change optimizations so that they focus more on benefits for children > > Information about Submissions > > Proposals should include the following: an abstract of 500-750 words (not including references) as well as background information on the author(s), including contact information and an abbreviated bio that describes previous and current research that relates to the special issue theme. Submissions will be judged on the quality of review and level of analysis, and the applicability of the results to other democracies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track on Posters & E-Voting System Demos Chair: Rønne, Peter (University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg) We invite demonstrations of electronic voting systems and related software, and posters on e-voting topics in general, to be presented in an open session on Tuesday 1 October before the welcome reception. Participation is open to all participants at the conference, but for demos we request a Short Paper (two pages) by 15 September submitted via Easychair describing system requirements and properties, e.g.: - whether the system is intended for use in controlled (i.e. in polling stations) or uncontrolled environments (i.e. remotely via the Internet or in kiosks); - which types of elections it accommodates; - whether it addresses needs of voters with disabilities; - what sort of verifiability it provides; - the extent to which it guarantees voter privacy; - whether it has been deployed in a real election; - how to obtain more information. This year we also invite presentation of posters of preliminary or finished work on the topics mentioned in the other tracks above. Poster presentations will give you a chance to present your work and get feedback from other attendees. To join the session it is necessary to prepare an abstract of maximum two pages or the poster itself, and submit this by 15 September via Easychair. The participants will have to print and bring the posters themselves, and these will not appear in the proceedings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Colloquium Chairs: Koenig, Reto (Bern University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland), Driza Maurer, Ardita (Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau ZDA/ University of Zurich, Switzerland) The aim of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of scope for discussion and to initiate collaboration based on presentations by attendees. Each participant interested should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) in the form of a short paper (two pages in length) using the conference’s EasyChair platform. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Format of the Conference The format of the conference will be a three-day meeting. The PhD Colloquium and the Demonstration Session take place on the day before the formal conference begins. No parallel sessions will be held, and sufficient room will be provided for informal communication. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper-based Submissions Paper-based submissions may be in one of two formats-either as a full paper or as an abstract. - Full paper submissions (max 16 pages in LNCS format in total); - Short Paper submissions (max 2 pages in LNCS format in total). All submissions will be subject to double-blind review. Submissions must be anonymous (with no reference to the authors). Submissions must be made using the conference’s EasyChair system, which serves as the online system for the review process. During submission, please select the appropriate area of interest or the PhD colloquium. The chairs of the fields of interest reserve the right to re-assign papers to other areas, in case of a better fit based on reviewer feedback and in collaboration with other focus of interest chairs. LNCS style must be used. If you believe that one or more of the program’s committee members may have a conflict of interest with your submission, please inform the general chairs at conference-chairs(a)e-vote-id.org. In turn, settings in the EasyChair system will be set accordingly, so that the respective member/s is/are not involved in the review process. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Key Dates for Submissions Deadline for submitting papers: (Hawaiian time, rigid deadline, no extension) 15 May 2019 – 23:59 Notification of Acceptance: 24 June 2019 Deadline for PhD Colloquium submissions: 28 June 2019 Deadline for Short Papers for E-Voting System Demo Session: 15 September 2019 Other Relevant Dates Deadline for Paper Bids: 20 May 2019 Deadline for Reviews: 15 June 2019 Programme Committee Discussion: 21 June 2019 Deadline for Re-submitting Conditionally Accepted Papers (shepherding process): 12 July 2019 Deadline for Camera-Ready Paper Submissions: 26 July 2019 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Publication Conference proceedings will be available at the time of the conference.
