by Roberts, Sarah 08 May '19

08 May '19

Greetings, all - Contributions are being sought from scholars in the social sciences and from those who, specifically or broadly, do work concerned with contending with online abusive language and behavior. Important Updates: - We have extended the deadline for brief social science-related abstracts for those who wish to participate in the workshop until May 14. - In addition, we have introduced a new option for participation for those who cannot attend in person but would like to contribute and participate. This takes the form of an extended abstract. This latter option may be considered a publication and will serve as the basis for discussion at the onsite event in August. - More information can be found, and both/either can be submitted via the conference submission portal accessible from: https://sites.google.com/view/alw3/call-for-papers Please share widely! Thank you. --- 3rd Workshop on Abusive Language Online (ALW3) The annual meeting of the Association of Computational Linguistics 2019 (Florence, Italy), August 01, 2019 Submission deadline: May 3, 2019 Website: https://sites.google.com/view/alw3 Submission link: https://www.softconf.com/acl2019/alw/ Overview Interaction amongst users on social networking platforms can enable constructive and insightful conversations and civic participation; however, on many sites that encourage user interaction, verbal abuse has become commonplace, leading to negative outcomes such as cyberbullying, hate speech, and scapegoating. In online contexts, aggressive behavior may be more frequent than in face-to-face interaction, which can poison the social climates within online communities. The last few years have seen a surge in such abusive online behavior, leaving governments, social media platforms, and individuals struggling to deal with the consequences. Held In conjunction with the 2019 annual meeting of the Association of Computational Linguistics in Florence, Italy, this workshop seeks to bring together technical practitioners and researchers with that have a greater focus on the social and societal influence and implications of online abuse. In previous iterations, the workshop has invited persons directly affected by online abuse and legal scholars to address the many facets and forms of abuse as it occurs on social media. In this third edition of the workshop, we wish to emphasise the the vast body of knowledge that exists and is being produced by internet and social scientific scholars while retaining a focus on the computational applications, calling for an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and dealing with online abuse. Paper Topics We invite long and short papers on any of the following general topics related and not limited to legal, social, and policy considerations of abusive language online: • The social and personal consequences of being the target of abusive language and targeting others with abusive language • Assessment of current computational and non-computational methods of addressing abusive language • Legal ramifications of measures taken against abusive language use - case studies, best practices, emerging issues • Social implications of monitoring and moderating unacceptable content • Considerations of implemented and proposed policies for dealing with abusive language online and the technological means of dealing with it • The psychological and social consequences of dealing with abuse, from user, community, worker and other perspectives. In addition, in this one-day workshop, we will have • a multidisciplinary panel discussion, • a forum for plenary discussion on the issues that researchers and practitioners face in efforts to work with abusive language detection, and • Selected papers from each of the 3 iterations (2017-2019) of the workshop will be selected for publication in a special issue of the journal First Monday. See https://sites.google.com/view/alw3 for further detail. Facebook/Instagram ToS and research
by Locatelli Elisabetta 08 May '19

08 May '19

Dear all, I resume a topic already discussed in the list some months ago to have a help about doing research on Facebook/Instagram contents posted by users and platforms’ ToS. After Cambridge Analytica both platforms restricted access to data. Facebook new ToS say “You may not access or collect data from our Products using automated means (without our prior permission) or attempt to access data you do not have permission to access.” Instagram ToS say “You can't attempt to create accounts or access or collect information in unauthorized ways. This includes creating accounts or collecting information in an automated way without our express permission.” So I was wondering if someone can help or maybe suggest literature about: * How much binding are ToS for a researcher? * Do these restrictions regard all kind of methodologies? * If I obtain the permission from a user to analyse his/her profile (i.e. in an ethnographic research project) or I access data that I can access with my own profile (i.e. for ethnographic analysis or for an analysis of public posts on Instagram), in these cases should I have the required permission/authorization or do ToS do refer exclusively to platform’s permission/authorization? * If a I retrieve data using an app that didn’t pass Facebook approval but that it is still working, I suppose these data should not be used, but if I decide to use them which kind of consequences may be? Just ethical ones or also legal ones? Thank you in advance for your help Best Elisabetta [http://Static.unicatt.it/layout/img/layout/5x1000.gif] Il tuo 5x1000 all’Università Cattolica è molto più di una firma CF 02133120150 www.unicatt.it/5permille<http://www.unicatt.it/5permille/>

New Journal Issue Published and CFP: In-Between Spaces
by Johnson, Gareth 08 May '19

08 May '19

Dear all, I'm delighted to announce the latest issue of Exchanges: The Interdisciplinary Research Journal (v6.2) has been published. A fully open-access and scholar-led title, Exchanges has a twin mission to enable the dissemination and support the development of authorial voices of post-graduate and early career researchers within a interdisciplinary context. https://exchanges.warwick.ac.uk/issue/view/25 Call for Papers: In-between spaces For the Spring 2020 issue, we particularly welcome submissions which will contribute to a themed section on in-between spaces. As scholars we are often focussed directly upon examining and understanding specific objects, cultures, properties or thinking. Yet, there is also incredible value in considering what lies between, outside or around our subject focus. Hence, we are invite authors to submit original, exciting, insightful research-based articles addressing some aspect of in-between spaces: however you or your disciplinary traditions conceptualise them. Exchanges especially welcomes articles tackling this topic by multiple authors with contrasting positions or from disparate fields. Submission deadline: Friday 1st November 2019 The full call and submission guidelines are available online. https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/cross_fac/ias/exchanges/cfp-exchanges_may_2019.pdf https://exchanges.warwick.ac.uk/about/submissions We also welcome non-themed papers, addressing topics suitable for an interdisciplinary readership. Re: [Air-L] Christchurch Call - relevant research links request
by Tarleton L. Gillespie 08 May '19

Erika, I've been working on a comprehensive list of scholarship on content moderation and platform governance. This is NOT it, at least not yet. Just a briefer sampling. But since you're on a tight schedule, I'm posting it here. (Anyone who feels their missing from this list, my apologies; I do have a longer list, you may be on it, and I'm still working on it. Happy if you send me pointers off list.) Ansd this does not cover the excellent scholarship that looks into specific challenging phenomena - hate speech, harassment, terrorism and social media, misinformation. The focus of the list is how the platforms respond. If you email me directly, I can gently indicate which of these are current, from scholars who might be particularly right for the event you're talking about, etc. Tarleton = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = *Content moderation and platform governance* Gorwa, Robert. 2019. “What Is Platform Governance?” Information, Communication & Society, 1–18. This meeting might consider issues such as online radicalization and hate speech, and perhaps also wider considerations of civil society in a digital era, though the exact agenda has yet to be finalized I have been asked to request of the global research community any recent scholarly works that might be useful for people here to consider as they work through their thinking as to what the Call should - rather than restricting to a particular topic, I'd like to cast the net wide at this stage, as the agenda is still evolving. So could you please send me directly links/cites to your work or works of your colleagues that may help contribute or feed into this important public discussion. There is a tight timeframe here, so if you could get them to me by the 10th May NZ time (which early in the 9th for the US and late in the 9th for Europe) I would be very appreciative. I will pass them onto the team as I get them. Thanking you in advance. Erika (PS: thanks also for making me one of your open seat representatives - I look forward to serving the organisation!) Hi Air-L, I’ve been varying my writing a bit and have just had two pieces published in Fast Company on Automation and Facial Recognition. My goal has been to contribute to the ongoing “news” conversation from an anthropological perspective. They may be interesting and/or useful for you and/or your students: S.A.
