CFP: CHANTS 2019 – 14th Workshop on Challenged Networks – co-located with ACM Mobicom 2019 - submission deadline June 14, 2019 - Los Cabos, Mexico
by Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou 20 May '19

20 May '19

CALL FOR PAPERS The 14th Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS 2019) http://conferences.ece.unm.edu/chants2019/ colocated with ACM Mobicom 2019, the 25th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking Oct 21-25, Los Cabos, Mexico Scope and Overview Challenged networks comprise those situations where communication is desired, but traditional Internet architectures fail to provide it effectively. Such networks may be characterized by intermittent connectivity, a heterogeneous mix of nodes, frequent nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions. The applications of challenged networks range from time-critical communications such as for disaster relief to delay-tolerant transmission in poorly connected regions or where censorship should be counteracted. However, challenged networking has also found many applications in everyday settings, for which they were not initially conceived, such as opportunistic networking supporting data-centric communications, traffic offloading from cellular networks, mobile cloud/edge computing, opportunistic and participatory sensing as well as challenged IoT. CHANTS builds on the success of the thirteen previous CHANTS workshops and WDTN 2005, and aims to stimulate research on the most novel topics of challenged networking research. This year’s edition encourages submission of theoretical and experimental work (including studies of real deployment), with a primary interest in new directions of challenged networking in concrete application scenarios and demonstrators in areas such as autonomous driving, underwater robots, emergency response operations, underground mining, interplanetary missions, polar research and unmanned aerial vehicles. The workshop seeks original work presented in the form of research papers describing new research approaches and results, as well as demo and poster submissions. Highly disruptive work-in-progress and position papers are also welcome, provided they focus on particularly innovative solutions or applications for challenged networks. All papers shall be forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and shall argue their impact and implications for ongoing or future research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: ● Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs), opportunistic communication and computing ● Modeling and analysis of challenged networks and protocols for challenged networks ● Communication systems and networks for underground mining ● Underwater communication systems and networks ● Security/trust/privacy concerns and solutions in challenged networks ● Networking in polar regions ● Millimeter Wave Networking ● Challenged networking techniques for mobile cloud computing and mobile data offloading ● Challenged networking techniques for participatory and opportunistic sensing ● Challenged networking in the Internet of Things and in Cyber-Physical Systems ● Energy-efficient communication in challenged networks ● User behavior modeling and Quality of Service provisioning in challenged networks ● Space-terrestrial networks, lunar networks as well as interplanetary networks ● Information-centric and content-centric networking in challenged networks ● Real-world mobility trace collection, analysis, and modeling for challenged environments ● Network coding in challenged networks ● Real deployment and case studies in various stages of use ● Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks ● Disrupted scenarios for challenged networks (e.g., disaster relief and emergency management) ● User Interfaces and interactive applications optimized for Challenged Networks ● Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems Program Committee Chairs Suzan Bayhan (TU Berlin, Germany) Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou (University of New Mexico, USA) Workshop Web Chair Estefanía Coronado (FBK CREATE-NET, Italy) Publicity Chair Gürkan Gür (ZHAW, Switzerland) Jim Plusquellic (University of New Mexico, USA) Steering Board Kevin Almeroth (UC Santa Barbara, USA) Kevin Fall (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) Stephen Farrell (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland) Jörg Ott (TU München, Germany) Andrea Passarella (IIT-CNR, Italy) Important Dates Abstract Registration: June 14th, 2019 Submission Deadline: June 21th, 2019 Acceptance Notification: July 31st, 2019 Camera-ready: August 12th, 2019 Workshop: October 25th, 2019 Paper Format and Submission Instructions General Paper Format Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages, and should adhere to the standard ACM conference proceedings format. All submissions must be written in English. Authors must register the abstract 1 week prior to the full paper submission. Demo/Poster Format Demo and poster proposals (to be published as part of the proceedings) must not be longer than 2 pages, for demos plus 1 page description of the precise setup and requirements (the 1-page setup description will not be published in the proceedings). Submission Reviews will be single-blinded. Papers should neither have been published elsewhere nor being currently under review by another conference or journal. Editorial Follow-Ups Extended versions of the selected workshop papers will be considered for possible fast track publication in well-known journals, e.g., Computer Communications (Elsevier) or the ACM GetMobile. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Eirini Eleni Tsiropoulou Assistant Professor Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM, 87131 Office: 235D Tel.: (505)-277-5501 Email: eirini(a)unm.edu<mailto:eirini@unm.edu> Website: PROTON Lab<http://ece-research.unm.edu/tsiropoulou/index.html> PROTON Lab’s News: @PROTON_Lab<https://twitter.com/PROTON_Lab>

CFP : Genealogies of online content identification
by Guillaume Heuguet 18 May '19

18 May '19

Call for papers *Genealogies of online content identification* Special issue of Internet Histories: Digital Technology, Culture and Society (editors of special issue: Maria Eriksson & Guillaume Heuguet) In today’s digital landscape, cultural content such as texts, films, images, and recorded sounds are increasingly subjected to automatic (or semi-automatic) processes of identification and classification. On a daily basis, spam filters scan heaps of emails in order to separate legit and illegit textual messages,1 algorithms analyze years of user-uploaded film on YouTube in search for copyright violations,2 and software systems scrutinize millions of images on social media sites in order to detect sexually offensive content.3 To an increasing extent, content identification systems are also trained to distinguish “fake-news” from “proper journalism” on news websites,4 and taught to recognize and filter violent or hateful content that circulates online.5 These examples reveal how machines and algorithmic systems are increasingly utilized to make complex cultural judgements regarding cultural content. Indeed, it could be argued that the wide-ranging adoption of content identification tools is constructing new ontologies of culture and regimes of truth in the online domain. When put to action, content identification technologies are trusted with the ability to separate good/bad forms of communication and used to secure the value, authenticity, origin, and ownership of content. Such efforts are deeply embedded in constructions of knowledge, new forms of political governance, and not least global market transactions. Content identification tools now make up an essential part of the online data economy by protecting the interests of rights holders and forwarding the mathematization, objectification, and commodification of cultural productions. Parallel to their increased pervasiveness and influence, however, content identification systems have also been heavily contested. Debates regarding automatic content identification tools recently gained momentum due to the European Union’s decision to update its copyright laws. A newly adopted EU directive encourages all platform owners to implement automatic content filters in order to safeguard copyrights6 and critics have argued that such measures run the risk of seriously hampering the freedom of speech and stifling cultural expressions online.7 High profile tech figures such as Tim Berners Lee (commonly known as one of the founders of the Internet) has even claimed that the widespread adoption of content filtering could effectively destroy the internet as we know it.8 Content identification systems, then, are not neutral devices but key sites where the moral, juridical, economical, and cultural implications of wide-ranging systems of online surveillance are currently negotiated and put to the test. This special issue welcomes contributions that trace the lineage and genealogy of online content identification tools and explores how content identification systems enact cultural values. It also explores how content identification technologies reconfigure systems of knowledge and power in the online domain. We especially invite submissions that reflect on the ways in which content identification systems are deployed to domesticate and control online cultural content, establish new and data-driven infrastructural systems for the treatment of cultural data, and bring about changes in the activity/status of cultural workers and rights holders. Contributions that locate online content identification tools within a longer historical trajectory of identification technologies are also especially welcomed, since digital content identification tools must be understood as continuations of analogue techniques for monitoring and measuring the qualities and identities of things. We envision contributors to be active in the fields of media history, software studies, media studies, media archaeology, social anthropology, science and technology studies, and related scientific domains. The topic of contributions may include, but are not limited to: - The historical and political implications of content identification tools for audio, video, images, and textual content such as machine learning systems and digital watermarking or fingerprinting tools - The genealogy of spam filters, fake news detection systems, and other strategies for keeping the internet “clean” and censoring/regulating the circulation and availability of online content - Comparative investigations of the technical workings of different methods for identifying content, including discussions on the challenges and potentials of indexing/identifying sound, images, texts and audiovisual content - Reviews of the scientific theories, political ideologies, and business logics that sustain and legitimize online systems of content identification - Reflections on historical and analogue techniques for identifying objects and commodities, such as paper watermarks and the use of signets and stamps - Issues of censorship related to online content identification and moderation and/or discussions regarding the ethical dilemmas and legal debates that surround content surveillance - Explorations of the implications of algorithmic judgements and measurements of identity, and reflections on the ways in which content identification tools redefine what is means to listen/see and transform how cultural objects are imagined and valued - Examinations of the relationship between human and algorithmic efforts to identify suspect content online and moderate information flows Submissions Abstracts of a maximum of 750 words should be emailed to Maria Eriksson ( maria.c.eriksson(a)umu.se) and Guillaume Heuguet ( guillaume.heuguet(a)sorbonne-nouvelle.fr) no later than 1 August 2019. Notification about acceptance to submit an article will be sent out by 1 September 2019. Authors of accepted abstracts are invited to submit an article by 1 February 2020. Final versions of articles are asked to keep within a 6,000 word limit. Please note that acceptance of abstract does not ensure final publication as all articles must go through the journal’s usual review process. Time schedule - 1 August 2019: due date for abstracts - 1 September 2019: notification of acceptance - 1 February 2020: accepted articles to be submitted for review - Feb-April 2020: review process and revisions About the guest-editors Guillaume Heuguet defended a dissertation in 2018 on music and media capitalism based on a longitudinal analysis of YouTube’s strategy and products, including its Content ID system (to be published by the French National Archives in 2019). He is currently an associated researcher at GRIPIC (Sorbonne Université) and Irmeccen (Sorbonne Nouvelle). He runs the music journal Audimat and has edited a forthcoming book entitled Anthology of Popular Music Studies in French (Philharmonie de Paris, 2019). Maria Eriksson is a doctoral candidate in media studies at Umeå University, Sweden who currently occupies a position as visiting scholar at the department of arts, media and philosophy at Basel University in Switzerland. She has a background in social anthropology and her main research interests concern the politics of software and the role of algorithms in managing the logistics and distribution of cultural content online. She is one of the co-authors of the book Spotify Teardown: Inside the Black Box of Streaming Music (MIT Press, 2019) and has previously co-edited special issues in journals such as Culture Unbound. Workshop Digitalization and Religious Contact
by Giulia Evolvi 17 May '19

17 May '19

Dear Colleagues, Here a CFP for people (especially early career) working on religion and digital media. Hope it may be of interest to some. Are you doing research on digitalization and religious contact? Or do you have a general interest in learning more about methods and theories in media and religious studies to address the ethical and social consequences of digitalization? Then you might like to actively join the round table at our workshop and share information about your project. This is an opportunity for early career researchers to receive funding to come to Bochum (Germany) for a two-day workshop. The workshop “*Digitalization and Religious Contact*” ( http://bit.ly/DigitalizationWS*)* will take place on *14-15 November 2019* at Ruhr University, in Bochum. It will be organized by two research centers: the Center for Religious Studies (CERES), which is an interdisciplinary and international center studying the dynamics of religious change and religious encounters in Europe and Asia ( www.ceres.rub.de) and the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), a research center where scholars can study the opportunities and challenges of the digital transformation (http://bit.ly/CAISEvent) During our workshop we want to address the following practical questions: How can scholars collect data about digital religion and analyze them? Which framework can better capture the role of the Internet in relation to religious contact? What kind of impact does digitalization have on religion, and how can it be analyzed? The workshop will include presentations from leading scholars in the field, including Mona Abdel-Fadil (University of Oslo), Oren Golan (University of Haifa), Tim Hutchings (University of Nottingham), Mehmet Karacuka (Ege University), Stephen Philaja (Newman University), Susanne Stadlbauer (University of Colorado), Johanna Sumiala (University of Helsinki). The second day will host the round table that will bring together senior researchers and early career scholars. We are willing to have early career scholars (including PhD students) who are interested in taking part in the round table. If you want to participate in this round table, please send us your abstract (300-400 words) before *30 July 2019* (to: giulia.evolvi(a)rub.de*; nina.hahne(a)cais.nrw*) The abstract should sum up your current research and point out your interest in the workshop and the input you plan to give. Travel and accommodation costs will be fully covered. Kind regards, Nina Hahne (CAIS) and Giulia Evolvi (CERES)
