*A PhD/postdoc position for a native Japanese speaker in a project about values in social media* If you are from Japan and interested in working on an exciting project for your PhD or postdoc studies (starting fall 2019), this could be a terrific fit for you. The project examines how values are constructed in digital spheres through a comparative analysis of user-generated content in five languages. The positions are fully funded: up to 5 years for PhD students and 2 years (with an extension option) for postdoctoral students. The team will be based at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Dept. of communication) with trips to the relevant countries for interview purposes. Hi All For those interested in digital culture and (modern) languages or multilingualism, this UK-based initiative may be of interest ... Paul ----- We are pleased to announce a new Digital Modern Languages seminar series, bringing together research and teaching in Modern Languages which engages with digital culture, media and technologies. The series is aimed at raising the visibility of digital research and teaching in Modern Languages in the UK, and will include speakers who represent a diverse range of areas of study and languages of specialism. This series is launched as part of the AHRC-funded Open World Research Initiative, and is supported by the Cross-Language Dynamics: Reshaping Community and Language Acts and Worldmaking projects, and by the AHRC Leadership Fellow for Modern Languages (Janice Carruthers). The series is convened by Paul Spence (King's College London) and Naomi Wells (Institute of Modern Languages Research). The series will be launched on Tuesday 21 May with a seminar on 'Points of Intersection: Digital Modern Languages' by Professor Claire Taylor (University of Liverpool). The seminar will take place at Bush House Lecture Theatre 2 BH(S) 4.04 (King's College London) - entrance via Kingsway - between 6 to 8pm, and includes a drinks reception. Critical Issues in Open Access and Scholarly Communications Friday 24 May Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre Whitehead Building Goldsmiths, University of London The four UK funding bodies have signalled their intention to move towards an open access policy for long-form publications and to mandate open access book publishing for the Research Excellence Framework exercise due in 2027. UKRI has signed up to Plan S, a Europe-wide coalition that aims to accelerate the transition to full and immediate open access. This event aims to widen the dialogue on open access books, examining the implications of UK policy for research culture and values, the future of scholarly publishing and for the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. It will reflect on the most recent findings from the Universities UK open access reports and provide a platform for gathering additional evidence and feedback from across the university sector. Incorporating representatives from funding agencies, the UUK working group on open access monographs, REF panelists and PVCrs, publishers, learned societies, scholarly associations and researchers from a range of institutions - who will highlight both the challenges and opportunities of open access monograph publishing - the event will be structured around the following questions: * What is the current UK policy on open access, and on open access monographs in particular? * What is at stake for REF 2027, research culture and values, ECRs and diversity in scholarly publishing and practice? * Who benefits from open access or from publishing as usual? * What are the challenges of open access monograph publishing? * What kind of experiments are made possible, what collaborations might emerge? * Why publish, and where might online, open and platform-based publishing lead us next? * What changes might be respectively desirable, equitable and feasible at national and global scale? Best, Bastiaan Vanacker Associate Professor Program Director, Center for Digital Ethics and Policy Loyola University Chicago CFA - Ninth International Symposium on Digital Ethics The Center for Digital Ethics & Policy<http://digitalethics.org> (digitalethics.org) at Loyola University Chicago will be holding its 9th annual International Symposium on Digital Ethics on November 7th and 8th 2019. This year, we are inviting research teams consisting of one senior and one junior scholar to submit a research proposal. We are looking for papers on digital ethics. Topics might include but are not limited to privacy, hate speech, fake news, platform ethics, AI/robotics/algorithms, predictive analytics, native advertising online, influencer endorsements, predictive analytics, VR, intellectual property, hacking, scamming, surveillance, information mining, data protection, shifting norms in journalism and advertising, transparency, digital citizenship, or anything else relating to ethical questions raised by digital technology. This is an interdisciplinary symposium, we welcome all backgrounds and approaches to research. Researchers can either submit a proposal as a team (consisting of one junior and one senior scholar) or individually. In the latter case, organizers will match submitters up with a partner based on compatibility of the proposal. Five teams will be selected to present completed research at the symposium and critique each others' work during five 75-minute sessions. After further review, the articles will be eligible for inclusion in a special issue of the Journal of Media Ethics. For the purposes of this symposium, we define "senior scholars" as researchers who have been employed as a full-time faculty member for five years or more. "Junior scholars" have not met this threshold or are currently enrolled in a doctoral program. Abstracts should propose original research that has not been presented or published elsewhere. The abstract should be between 500 and 1,000 words in length (not including references) and should include a discussion of the methodology used. Please also submit a current C.V. of all authors with the abstract. Abstracts are due on May 20, notifications will be sent out by June 5. Completed papers will be due by October 15. Organizers will cover lodging for two nights and most meals and will provide small stipends to symposium participants.
