# Call for Steering Committee Members - MediArXiv The initial Steering Committee is excited to announce the forthcoming launch of MediArXiv, the nonprofit, open archive for media, film & communication studies. The open-access "preprint" server will soon accept submissions from scholars across our diverse fields. MediArXiv will join the growing movement started by the math/physics/computer science-oriented arXiv.org over 25 years ago, as one of the first full-fledged preprint servers conceived for humanities and social science scholars. MediArxiv will accept working papers, pre-prints, accepted manuscripts (post-prints), and published manuscripts. The service is open to articles, books, and book chapters. There is currently some limited support for other scholarly forms (like video essays), which we plan to expand and officially support in the future. Our aim is to promote open scholarship across media, film and communication studies around the world. In addition to accepting and moderating submissions, we plan to advocate for policy changes at the major media, film, & communication studies professional societies around the world--to push for open-access friendly policies, in particular, for the journals that these associations sponsor. MediArXiv will launch in early 2019 on the Open Science Framework, which already hosts a number of other discipline-specific open archives: https://osf.io/preprints/ We are writing to solicit applications for additional Steering Committee membership, with an interest in, but not limited to, early career scholars and those who work in the Global South. We anticipate adding five- to six- additional members, who will help to establish and guide MediArXiv together with the existing members. Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have paved the way for generating huge amount of diverse, streaming bit data in a short period of time. Such social media data require the application of big data analytics to produce meaningful information to both information consumers and data generators. Machine learning and AI techniques are particularly effective in situations where deep and predictive insights need to be uncovered from such social media data sets that are large, diverse and fast changing. Following the discussion at our workshop at TheWebConf 2018, we aim to focus on how to apply data mining, recommendation, machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems for analytic and predictive modeling on social media, big data, small data, web and sensor data. Contrary to last year’s workshop, we would like to particularly invite researchers that are interested in going beyond standard analytics approaches and try to discover the intelligent information hidden in the large and fast-changing social media data. Any paper published by the ACM, IEEE, etc. which can be properly cited constitutes research which must be considered in judging the novelty of a TheWebConf submission, whether the published paper was in a conference, journal, or workshop. That’s according to a request for information issued December 18 by the IRS’s National Office of Procurement. The mining of social media data by the agency has been suspected in the past, but the IRS has never before confirmed the practice. “Businesses and individuals increasingly use social media to advertise, promote, and sell products and services,” the IRS solicitation reads. “For example, taxpayers can create ‘online stores’ on social networking sites free of cost. Much of this information is unrestricted, allowing the public, businesses and various governmental agencies to discover taxpayers’ locations and income sources. But the IRS currently has no formal tool to access this public information, compile social media feeds, or search multiple social media sites.” Current IRS policy regarding its employees’ use of internet-based social media research is “largely prohibitive,” it continues. Workers are barred from using their personal social media accounts for work, nor are they allowed to create fake accounts to perform compliance-related tasks. The IRS also “prohibits fictitious ‘friending,’ ‘liking,’ and ‘following’ a person or business.” Evinnia Lenick, a senior program analyst with the IRS who is overseeing this stage of the initiative, and Kelvin Bogan, the contract specialist on the project, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. American businesses underpay their taxes by $125 billion each year, according to IRS estimates. Overall, the tax agency reports a net tax gap of more than $400 billion annually due to tax evaders. The agency can certainly use all the help it can get, especially in the face of a budget deficit that has swollen under president Donald Trump to $782 billion; corporate tax receipts have dropped $92 billion year-over-year. The IRS is also working with fewer resources: As of last year, it had 9,510 auditors, one-third fewer than it had in 2010. It conducted 675,000 fewer audits in 2017 than it did in 2010, a drop of 42%. What’s more, nearly a third of current IRS employees will be eligible to retire in the next year. As such, the IRS is looking for a social media search tool that will, among other things: • Provide a product that is easily explainable in court. • Provide real time, customizable reports of publicly available social media information (provided or advertised by businesses), such as new products, current sales, and new locations. • Provide reports showing that a taxpayer participated in an online chat room, blog, or forum, and reports showing the chat room or blog conversation threads. • Provide available biometric data, such as photos, current address, or changes to marital status. • Provide access for at least 25,000 concurrent users. Dear colleagues, Applications are invited for 15 full-time PhD student positions (called Early Stage Researchers or ESR) for joint and double PhD degrees for 36 months. The positions are offered within the A-WEAR European Joint Doctorate (www.a-wear.eu<http://www.a-wear.eu>) action of the highly appreciated EU-funded Marie Skłodowska Curie grants (grant # 813278). We offer the possibility of PhD graduation with double or joint PhD certificate from two EU universities (research area is wearable computing). The positions are fully funded for a 36-month period. Facebook scraper for qualitative analysis

Hi to all, I've been trying to import data form a public Facebook group as dataset, mainly for qualitative analysis. The group includes substantial amounts of data with thousands of users. I would need to extract data (posts and comments) for at least a two months period. I was previously using a NVivo extension (NCapture) to do so, but Facebook recently changes its API, which implies restrictions for dataset import. Tools such as Netvizz don't seem to work at the moment as well. I was wondering if you knew about other ways or ressources to make such a gathering possible. Best, Alexandra
