These relations demand our fullest attention because they touch on the essence of what migration means in societies that are undergoing democratic challenges. Research shows that media and technologies play a vital role for people who migrate, but that the same media and technologies serve to spread xenophobia, increase societal polarization and enable elaborate surveillance possibilities. With its intensifying anti-migration populist discourses, humanitarian border crises and efforts to secure borders through technological solutions, the European context provides a pulsating scene to examine such deepening relations. Taking place in the heart of Europe’s political capital, this conference aims to critically reflect on what the much-debated notion of “Fortress Europe” means in the digital age and how it can guide our future thinking on media and migration. As such, scholars of media, communication, migration and technology will be stimulated to contribute to critical discussions on border politics and migration debates. The thematic focus of this conference is on media, migration and technology and all their possible linkages and intersections. While significant attention goes to digital technologies and social media, the organizers do aim for a broad focus that also includes traditional media, and aspects of media production, organization, consumption, representation and policy. The three confirmed keynote speakers will be: • Dr Payal Arora(Erasmus University Rotterdam) • Professor Huub Dijstelbloem (University of Amsterdam) • Professor Myria Georgiou (London School of Economics) Besides the keynotes and parallel paper presentations the programme will also include a public event, a PhD masterclass and a book launch (details to be confirmed in the final programme). The conference takes place at the Palace of the Academies in the centre of Brussels (Hertogstraat 1, 1000 Brussel). The conference is organized by the European Communication Research & Education Association’s (ECREA) Diaspora, Migration & the Media (DMM) section in collaboration with the ECREA’s International & Intercultural Communication (IIC) section, the Young Scholars Network of ECREA (YECREA), the Netherlands-Flemish Communication Association (NeFCA), and has received support from the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts (KVAB). The organizers welcome submissions for paper presentations on the following three broad themes: • Borders and media technologies, particularly focusing on critical research on biometrics, algorithms, drones and cartography. • Producing and circulating meanings and media on migration, including work on discourse and representation, journalism, popular culture and policy. • Media uses and technologies by and for migrants and diasporas, including research on activism, identity, emotion/affect, education, well-being, language and mediated social relations. Especially welcome are submissions rooted in critical cultural studies, critical data studies, postcolonial studies, feminist research and from scholars who build bridges between academia, policy, activism, arts and public debate. These experience-based and practical reports need not contain original research, but must be accurate, complete and, where applicable, evidence-based accounts of the technology or system used. Submissions will be judged on the quality of review and level of analysis, and the applicability of the results to other democracies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Track on E-Voting System Demo Chair: Rønne, Peter (University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg) We invite demonstrations of electronic voting systems and related software, to be presented in an open session on Tuesday 1 October before the welcoming reception. Participation is open to all participants at the conference, but we request a Short Paper (two pages) by 15 September submitted via Easychair describing system requirements and properties, e.g.: - whether the system is intended for use in controlled (i.e. in polling stations) or uncontrolled environments (i.e. remotely via the Internet or in kiosks); - which types of elections it accommodates; - whether it addresses needs of voters with disabilities; - what sort of verifiability it provides; - the extent to which it guarantees voter privacy; - whether it has been deployed in a real election; - how to obtain more information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PhD Colloquium Chairs: Koenig, Reto (Bern University of Applied Sciences, Switzerland), Driza Maurer, Ardita (Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau ZDA/ University of Zurich, Switzerland) The aim of the colloquium is to foster understanding and collaboration between PhD students from various disciplines working on e-voting. To this end, the program allows plenty of scope for discussion and to initiate collaboration based on presentations by attendees. Each participant interested should submit his/her research proposal (or alternatively ideas for papers, open problems, or other issues where feedback from colleagues would be helpful etc.) in the form of a short paper (two pages in length) using the conference's EasyChair platform. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Format of the Conference The format of the conference will be a three-day meeting. The PhD Colloquium and the Demonstration Session take place on the day before the formal conference begins. No parallel sessions will be held, and sufficient room will be provided for informal communication. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paper-based Submissions Paper-based submissions may be in one of two formats-either as a full paper or as an abstract. - Full paper submissions (max 16 pages in LNCS format in total); - Short Paper submissions (max 2 pages in LNCS format in total). Submissions must be made using the conference's EasyChair system, which serves as the online system for the review process. *** SECOND CALL FOR DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM SUBMISSIONS *** 27th ACM International Conference on User Modeling, Adaptation and Personalization (ACM UMAP 2019) Golden Bay Beach Hotel 5*, Larnaca, Cyprus, June 9-12, 2019 http://www.cs.ucy.ac.cy/~george/lm/lm.php?tk=YWlyLUwJCQlhaXItTEBsaXN0c2Vydi… Submissions due: March 1, 2019 ACM UMAP 2019, the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users, and which collect, represent, and model user information, will, as in previous issues of the conference series, include a Doctoral Consortium (DC) Session, which provides an opportunity for doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests under the guidance of distinguished researchers from the field. Doctoral students are invited to apply to present their research to experienced scholars who will provide constructive feedback and advice. The Doctoral Consortium is implemented as a student mentoring program that introduces students to senior researchers from the relevant fields. Students are expected to document in a brief submission their doctoral research (see below described submission information for further details), which will be evaluated by the consortium committee. Good quality applications will be selected for presentation at a Doctoral Consortium Session as part of the conference. Promising, but less well- developed applications will be selected for presentation at a poster session. Each student with an accepted submission will be assigned a mentor who will provide feedback on the student's work and will discuss the doctoral research with the student and the audience at the consortium. How to Submit to the Doctoral Consortium To apply for the ACM UMAP 2019 Doctoral Consortium, students are asked to submit a paper presenting their doctoral research that describes: · The problem being addressed. · Motivation outlining the relevance of the problem and referring to related work. · The main contributions that the PhD project aims to achieve. · The progress made to date (including a clear description of the proposed approach, methodology and preliminary results) as well as the plan for further research. · Topics include (but are not limited to) the ACM UMAP 2019 key areas. Each DC submission is encouraged to consider the following: identification of related (state of the art) work, indication of the potential innovation, application or advancement of the state-of-the-art that the work intends to achieve. In addition, as appropriate for the PhD project, the submissions can consider: indication of data to be used for experimentation, indication of implementation approach, indication of evaluation criteria and experimental design. Each submission should contain a cover page including the paper title, name of the PhD candidate, the name of his/her supervisor(s) and University, a paragraph describing the stage they are in the PhD programme, together with a brief description of their background. This will enable the committee to adapt its assistance to each student. [With apologies for cross posting] *CALL FOR PAPERS - vista - visual culture journal* *“Visual, digital and media culture: Images among generations”* Social context determined by the culture of media convergence, together with the proliferation of digital devices connected to the Internet and their penetration among citizens, has given relevance, more than ever, to the media and visual culture. Digital media and images have conducted visual field towards the study of consumer´s practices and producer´s image, in accordance with the social aspects and the cultural contexts that characterize them. To the multidisciplinary approach of media and digital literacy, intergenerational issue is added as the starting point of this issue, which seeks to delve into the fact that the media experience occurs in differentiated conditions, characterized by different cultural (media and digital) competences between generations: analogical and digital citizens, emigrants and digital natives. From the family portraits to the selfies of our smartphones, from soap opera and TV series to social networks. Images produced and consumed get increased from a diversity of experiences and memories, from a multiplicity of lifestyles and media uses, which is worth to be rethought from the idea of "generations". Which are the visual environments of socialization for the different generations? What influences do they exercise in their daily lives, in their experience, and in their memory? What is the role of visual and media literacy in the process of understanding the relationship between different generations and the different media? How visual culture contributes to the pedagogical processes? Does the generational perspective contribute for the understanding of the image transformation and impact in contemporaneity? Is the visual culture an approaching element among generations? Which are the more suited proposals and theoretical reflections in the current context? Is the visual culture an inspiring element to favor participative methodologies in this field? Can digital age and its visual culture favor generational barriers? Does the digital visual culture assume an intergenerational perspective? *vista - visual culture journal *is a peer-reviewed journal and operates under a double-blind review process. Tutorials are intensive instructional sessions aimed to provide a comprehensive introduction to established or emerging research topics of interest for the UMAP community. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: · new user modeling technologies, methods, techniques, and trends (e.g. exploiting data mining and big data analytics for user modeling, evaluation methodologies, data visualization, etc.); · user modeling and personalization techniques for specific domains (e.g., health sciences, e-government, e-commerce, cultural heritage, education, internet of things, mobile, music, information retrieval, etc.); · application of user modeling and personalization techniques for information retrieval and recommender systems; · eliciting and learning user preferences by taking into account users' emotional state, physical state, personality, trust, cognitive factors. An ideal tutorial should be broad enough to provide a basic introduction to the chosen area, but it should also cover the most important topics in depth. Tutorial presenters can have one page in the adjunct proceedings. PROPOSAL FORMAT AND SUBMISSION Tutorial proposals should be submitted in PDF format to both tutorial chairs, not exceeding 5 pages and containing the following information: 1. Title and abstract of the tutorial for inclusion on the ACM UMAP 2019 website (200 words maximum). 2. Tutorial description: · learning objectives of the tutorial and relevance to ACM UMAP 2019; · targeted audience (introductory, intermediate, advanced) and prerequisite knowledge or skills; · a brief outline of the tutorial structure; · practical sessions. 3. Tutorial length: full (6 hours) or half day (3 hours). 4. Other venues to which the tutorial or part thereof has been or will be presented, in addition to explaining how the current tutorial differs from the other editions. 5. Name, email address, affiliation and brief professional biography of the tutorial instructor(s), indicating previous training and speaking experience.
