CfP ECREA Mid-Year Section Conference: Infrastructures and Inequalities: Media industries, digital cultures and politics
by Anne Kaun 22 Jan '19

22 Jan '19

Infrastructures and Inequalities: Media industries, digital cultures and politics Call for Papers ECREA Mid-Year Section Conference 21-22 October 2019, University of Helsinki, Finland Joint Conference of three ECREA Sections: Communication and Democracy; Digital Culture and Communication; and Media Industries and Cultural Production Abstract Deadline 1 June 2019 Confirmed keynote speakers: * Lisa Parks, Massachusetts Institute of Technology * Kaarina Nikunen, University of Tampere In a turn to ‘infrastructuralism’ (Peters 2015), media and communication scholars are increasingly attentive to the materialities and politics of the technological, organisational and cultural infrastructures that underpin media today. Platforms, data centres, software, but also new forms of organising cultural production and labour, shape the politics of digital cultures and transform the media industries. Digital and media infrastructures have become elemental to everyday life. They are significant in reproducing existing social and cultural inequalities, as well as creating new power struggles. As digital/media infrastructures unfold in everyday life, they bring challenges across multiple domains, from the foundations of social justice to the industrial structures underpinning our everyday interactions with media and communication systems. This conference aims to address the politics and inequalities that emerge, as technological and media industries adopt, dismantle and transform infrastructures to channel and process communication flows. Media infrastructures (broadly) operate under different and uneven conditions that configure media labour, media production, and the politics of communication and access (Starosielski and Parks 2015). This conference seeks to examine digital/media infrastructures and inequalities from an inter- and multi-disciplinary perspective, inviting papers to interrogate the significance of the ‘infrastructural turn’ in media and communication studies to our understanding of media industries, democracy and digital cultures. During this joint-ECREA section conference, we aim to engage with questions concerning inequalities and the infrastructures of digital culture, media industries and (digital) democracy through addressing topics such as (but not limited to): * The value, significance and relevance of infrastructure studies to media industry studies, the study of media and democracy, as well as digital culture * The industries and labour that operate and control specific technological media infrastructures, such as data centres, cloud computing, cable/satellite networks, content delivery networks * The politics and power dynamics of digital/media infrastructures * The significance of digital/media infrastructures in everyday life, especially related to the reproduction of social inequalities * The impact of digital/media infrastructures on culture, society, politics and democracy * The impact of digital/media infrastructures on media labour and cultural production * The organisational and cultural infrastructures of the media industries * Experiences and affective relationships that emerge in connection with media infrastructures * Forms of logistical media * Temporalities of media infrastructures * Emerging questions for the foundations of social justice in the digital media infrastructural turn Submission details Please submit a 300-word abstract for individual proposals. Panel proposals should include a 300-word panel rationale plus individual 200 word abstracts from a minimum of four speakers. All abstracts for individual as well as panel proposals should be submitted through EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=infrastructuresandin Deadline for submission is 1 June 2019. Deadline approaching: 4S Open Panel No. 28: Counter-Hegemonic Epistemologies as Innovation and/or Contestation
by Yvonne Eadon 22 Jan '19

22 Jan '19

Dear AioR community, Apologies for cross-posting. This is a call for contributions to 4S Open Panel No. 28: Counter-Hegemonic Epistemologies as Innovation and/or Contestation. <https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/> The official call can be found below. This open panel could include papers on a myriad of subjects having to do with different systems of knowledge coming up against one another, such as the following: - Silences, Imaginaries, Ethics, and Mistrust: Identifying and Interacting with Suspicious Researchers in Archives - Pharmacological Self-Experimentation: How do techniques of self-quantification shape popular discourses of wellness? - Indigenous knowledge systems and their relationship to museums' institutionalized forms of coloniality - Looking to Black Mountain College for pedagogical innovation in arts education - Ghost hunting: pseudoscientific methods in the post-truth era Submissions are due on February 1, 2019. Please contact the organizers Yvonne Eadon (UCLA), ymeadon(a)gmail.com; and James Hodges (Rutgers) James.hodges(a)rutgers.edu with any questions. "Resistance to dominant modes of thinking, knowing, and doing can take a variety of forms– and often results in the production of new epistemological communities of practice. The counter-hegemonic epistemologies of conspiracy theorists, self-experimenters, citizen scientists, marginalized and oppressed communities, and members of many other knowledge domains frequently embody narratives and ways of knowing that run against the dominant paradigms of their social and historical contexts. Thomas Kuhn’s work on paradigm shifts is just one example of the turmoil around shifts in dominant scientific epistemology. In many cases, critical or disruptive epistemologies are met by those in power with skepticism and even fear. This open panel calls for case studies addressing counter-hegemonic epistemologies in the fields of history of science and technology, as well as STS, information studies, education, media studies, and other relevant disciplines. We are particularly interested in research that brings a comparative historical perspective to bear on the continuously contested nature of dominant knowledge systems. Some points to consider could be: how have specific counter-narratives affected the dominant discourses in the fields that they challenge? Alternatively, how do dominant discourses overpower counter-hegemonic epistemologies? What kinds of contexts does this happen in, and what are the social, political, and historical implications of such contestation? We welcome submissions that address communities including but not limited to alternative education, decolonial science and technology, clandestine chemistry, whistleblowing, harm reduction, and radical politics. By bringing such disparate ways of knowing into contact, our panel aims to build towards a robust account of the innovation and contestation that prevail among counter-hegemonic epistemological communities." *If you would like to submit, please visit the 4S website and upload your 250-word abstract to 4S Open Panel No. 28: Counter-Hegemonic Epistemologies as Innovation and/or Contestation. <https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/> *The deadline is February 1, 2019. We look forward to your contributions! -- Yvonne M. Eadon Information Studies Doctoral Student UCLA

SASE Call for Papers: Work and the feeling of the future
by Wissinger, Elizabeth Anne 22 Jan '19

22 Jan '19

Dear AoIR folks, Please see our CFP deadline January 28th. Come to NYC this summer! We are interested in your work. Details below: Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics - SASE The New School - New York City, USA, 27-29 June 2019 Abstract submission deadline: 14 January 2019 EXTENDED TO 28 JANUARY 2019 —————————— WORK AND THE FEELING OF THE FUTURE What cannot be fathomed may be felt. This panel will focus on how the nature of what the future holds may be enfolded in the present in registers that cannot necessarily or completely be articulated: the registers of bodies, emotions, affect, sensations, spaces, capacities, and the virtual. We are interested in bringing together scholars whose work examines the way in which the feeling of the future exists in the work and labor of the present. This includes especially how the feeling of the future defines and reconfigures inequalities, along the lines of class, gender, sexuality, race or ethnicity, or along other lines, and thereby impacts what is experienced as possible/not possible and for whom, and what solidarities are formed/not formed. All methodological and conceptual approaches are welcome. We hope to bring together scholars from multiple disciplines who share a common interest in the areas of what may be felt, to consider how our training and trajectories as researchers may lead to differing conceptualizations of these topics, but also to see what kinds of overlaps and compatibilities are generated by a more concrete concern with issues of work and labor. Eventual organization of sessions will reflect the papers submitted, but potential themes for panels and papers include: * Ways in which the future may be felt but not fathomed in work and labor * The effects of digital technologies and platforms on learning to labor, especially embodied and emotional aspects of labor * The effects of digital technologies and platforms on what embodied labor is * New forms of division and segmentation in labor markets on the basis of what is and can be felt, or affected, or embodied * Imaginaries or creative/artistic visions of alternatives to work or the rejection of work * The effects of politics and programs of austerity on the feelings of work (in any area, but notably including work in universities) * The meaning and impact of movements such as #MeToo in relation to workplace cultures and the organization of work —————————— ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INFORMATION - Abstracts for submissions to mini-conferences should be no longer than 1000 words. All submissions need to include 3 key words. - Submission is through the SASE website: https://sase.org/event/2019-new-york-city/#submissions —————————— CONFERENCE ORGANIZERS Ariel Ducey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, University of Calgary, Canada. CFP - "Data & markets" Open Panel at 4S
by kevin.mellet＠orange.com 22 Jan '19

22 Jan '19

We invite submissions to an open panel entitled "Data & Markets" (#32) at the Society for Social Studies of Science 4S annual meeting which will be held in New Orleans, 4-7 September 2019. Convenors: Thomas Beauvisage, Orange Labs Franck Cochoy, University Toulouse Jean Jaurès Mary Ebeling, Drexel University Kevin Mellet, Orange Labs STS scholars have long been interested in the assorted and diverse devices that equip markets, from market infrastructures to mundane marketing tools like shopping carts, knowledge devices, and measuring instruments. As markets are digitized, data are a key element in the operation of markets in a variety of forms: consumer records, scoring and targeting instruments, customization engines, algorithmic pricing, vending and trading machines. Hence, data act as a versatile, yet vital, apparatus for markets, through the construction of data as a device, a valuation tool, an infrastructure, or an asset. This panel aims to explore these various facets of data, and how these help to achieve markets. We particularly - though not exclusively - welcome contributions on three aspects of market 'datafication'. First, emergent data-based "images" of the consumer enhance classic customer representations produced by marketing, through data innovations in CRM databases, data brokers' segments, cookie-based data pools, and social media data. What lies behind these data doubles, and what are their lived and experiential effects on consumers? Secondly, with big data technologies, marketing knowledge is increasingly produced from the analysis of large databases that combine a diverse array of information on consumers, products, firms, and market operations. These data are then stabilized through metrics, dashboards and standards. How do these new knowledge devices reconfigure practices? Third, data fuels market automation mechanisms, such as algorithmic pricing, recommendation engines, programmatic advertising, high-frequency trading. How do algorithmic markets and digital platforms take place in practice, and how do they reconfigure market agencements? Deadline for submitting proposals is 1. CFP: Domestic Technologies: Place, Person, Process (4S open panel)
by Amy Johnson 21 Jan '19

21 Jan '19

Domestic Technologies: Place, Person, Process (4S open panel #41) Domestic technologies have long been a generative focus of feminist technology studies, the study of the social construction of technology, and scholarship on the social shaping of technology. Motivated by current sociotechnical challenges to public/private boundaries and the impact of economic disparity, war, and environmental crisis on homes and homelessness, we look anew at the relationship between the technological and the domestic to investigate contemporary lived experience. From this foundation, we pursue three lines of inquiry: Domestic technologies as objects of the home: Deeply sociotechnical, the home mixes the personal, relational, and architectural. How do household technologies, from weighted blankets to kimchi fridges, produce domesticity? How do different technological conceptions of the home, from refugee camp to castle to networked ecology, shape inhabitants’ lives? Technologies as domestic persons: From homemaker and domestic worker to digital assistant and autonomous vacuum cleaner, the home supports varied forms of personhood. How do language, performance, and affective labor construct domestic technologies as persons—and humans as domestic technologies? How do materiality and design mark domestic technologies as persons and nonpersons? The domestication processes of technology: The deep familiarity of the home makes it also a terrain of uncanny valleys. What practices, internal or external to the home, render domestic technologies acceptable, intimate, and familiar? What place does domesticity occupy in larger societal trajectories of technologies? We invite papers drawing on diverse contexts and methodologies. This Open Panel will have a companion panel at the National Women’s Studies Association conference. *Deadline to apply: February 1, 2019* Submission info (+ full open panel list): https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/ 4S 2019 will be held September 4-7, 2019 in New Orleans; this year's theme: Innovations, Interruptions, Regenerations. CFP: 4S NOLA - Games, Virtual Technologies, and STS
by Malazita, James Wilson 21 Jan '19

21 Jan '19

250 word abstract deadline February 1. Conference September 4-7 2019 in New Orleans ------------------------------------ 57. Games, Virtual Technologies, and STS Organizer: James Malazita, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/ Games are flexible epistemic objects, variously constructed as entertainment, military and logistics simulations, communications technologies, scientific apparatuses, cultural artifacts, art, and media. With a few notable exceptions, however, academic analyses of games and game development practices tend to be the domain of media and cultural studies scholars, which produce vibrant—but disciplinary-inflected—research practices, perspectives, and interpretations. This panel seeks to understand what games and virtual technologies mean from an STS perspective, as well to connect STS’s strengths analyzing knowledge practices, situated knowledges, and the mutual shaping of technology & society to the thriving communities of games studies scholars in media studies, interpretive textual studies, and critical code studies. What does STS have to contribute, and how can STS reconfigure its own boundaries about what “counts” as scientific and technical practice to better address games, media technologies, and virtual spaces? This panel track welcomes submissions on games and their interrelated virtual technologies, including VR and simulation systems, game development engines, software/hardware interfaces and platforms, graphics technologies, and real-time code. We especially welcome papers that address games and virtual technologies as political knowledge systems and practices, and papers that adopt feminist/decolonial science studies and critical technology studies stances in their analyses. ---------------------------------------------- Jim Malazita malazj(a)rpi.edu Assistant Professor Science & Technology Studies Games & Simulation Arts & Sciences Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

CFP: 4S Open Panel on Becoming “Data-Driven”: Burgeoning Data Cultures and Liminality in Civil Service
by Leah Elaine Horgan 21 Jan '19

21 Jan '19

*4S (Society for Social Studies of Science) 2019 Open Panel: #**14. Becoming “Data-Driven”: Burgeoning Data Cultures and Liminality in Civil Service* *September 4-7, 2019 | **New Orleans, USA | Deadline is February 1st, 2019* Premised on the promises of being “data-driven,” nation-states across the globe are building web-based, data-driven systems to manage populations, resources, and risk. Scholarship in postcolonial STS and critical data studies critiques the widespread use of data-driven systems, pointing to the racialized, gendered, and socioeconomic consequences embedded in their production and use, and the troubled histories from which such apparatuses arise (Borocas and Selbst 2016; Browne 2017; Crawford and boyd 2012; Noble 2017; Suchman 2007). This research has productively demonstrated that data technologies are not neutral, but instead are socially, culturally, and politically situated ways of knowing and seeing (Browne 2017; Gitelman 2014; Jasanoff 2017; Thakor 2017). While scholars have studied the recent and often algorithmic proliferation of these data-driven practices (Eubanks 2018; Brayne 2017; Lyon 2014), less attention has been paid to the complex interplay between data-driven domination and the changing norms of everyday administration—the day-to-day work of forging of what Oscar Gandy calls ‘‘actionable intelligence’’ (2012: 125). And, how these systems work outside of the West is largely unattended to. Using these conditions as a starting point, we illuminate the range of practices and perceptions of being “data-driven,” from policy makers in capital cities to mid-management urban police to rural officials. How do government workers develop a sense of “data literacy” in divergent contexts across regions? How do they derive value in data and data-driven techniques? Through empirical analysis, this panel digs beneath macro trends and rhetoric to query the lived experiences of working through these burgeoning data systems. Single paper submissions should be in the form of abstracts of up to 250 words (*submission guidelines below*). We welcome traditional papers as well as experimental responses to the panel’s theme (mixed-media, performance, experimental writing, etc.). *Organizers: * Leah Horgan, University of California, Irvine *horganl(a)uci.edu <horganl(a)uci.edu> * Margaret Jack, Cornell University *mcj46(a)cornell.edu <mcj46(a)cornell.edu>* Cindy Lin, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor *cindylky(a)umich.edu <cindylky(a)umich.edu>* Guideline for Submission: https://www.4s2019.org/call-for-submissions/ List of Accepted Panels: https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/ *Leah Horgan* dept of informatics donald bren school of information + computer sciences university of california, irvine
