4S 2019 Open Panel: Emotional Labor and Care Work in Gig Economy Systems
by Nemer, David 29 Jan '19

29 Jan '19

Hello all! Austin Toombs (Purdue University) and I (David Nemer, University of Kentucky) are putting together an open panel on Emotional Labor and Care Work in Gig Economy System for the 4S 2019 conference in New Orleans. Description is below. We encourage you to apply and spread the word. Don't hesitate to reach out and ask questions! ( https://convention2.allacademic.com/one/ssss/4s19/) 185. Uncovering Emotional Labor and Care Work in Gig Economy Systems David Nemer, University of Kentucky Austin Tooms, Purdue University The gig-economy is typically understood to comprise two forms of work: crowdwork, e.g., Mechanical Turk and CrowdFlower, and work-on-demand via app, e.g. Airbnb and Uber. These platforms connect an indefinite number of organizations, individuals, clients, and workers both locally and globally. While workers are compensated for the services they provide, these platforms also profit from the immaterial labor that workers must engage in, uncompensated and often undefined, in order to provide their customers with a high standard of service and receive commensurate ratings. This “immaterial labor”—that is, all those aspects of labor relations that go beyond the material aspects of work and production—is obfuscated by the platforms and the sociotechnical systems in which those platforms are embedded. In this panel we focus on two feminist interpretations of immaterial labor that have attracted the interest of the STS community: Emotional Labor, which is the management of personal feeling that requires one to induce or suppress feeling in order to sustain the proper outward countenance for others’ sake; and Care Work, which in gig-economy settings can include the often-unrecognized work related to providing or facilitating others’ comfort, such as through offering amenities, recommendations, unique experiences, cleaning, and more. We invite papers that explore such approaches on gig-economy platforms and help us understand how emotional labor and care work are entangled with the successes of these platforms, while also necessarily downplayed or made hidden within the surrounding sociotechnical system. Thanks! -- *David Nemer, PhD* Assistant Professor School of Information Science University of Kentucky http://dnemer.com <http://www.dnemer.com/> Check out "Favela Digital: The other side of technology" - http://favela-digital.com

CFP: Fifth International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'19)
by Gaurav Misra 28 Jan '19

28 Jan '19

********Submission Deadline Approaching********** *Call for Papers: Fifth International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'19) * https://iwpe.info/ co-located with the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy May 23, 2019 - Hyatt Regency, San Francisco, CA ************************************************************ *IMPORTANT DATES* *Deadline of abstract submission: January 30, 2019* *Deadline of paper submission: February 3, 2019* *Notification of acceptance: February 23, 2019 * ************************************************************ We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 5th International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'19). Ongoing news reports regarding global surveillance programs, massive personal data breaches in corporate databases, and notorious examples of personal tragedies due to privacy violations have intensified societal demands for privacy-friendly systems. In response, current legislative and standardization processes worldwide aim to strengthen individual’s privacy by introducing legal, organizational and technical frameworks that personal data collectors and processors must follow. However, in practice, these initiatives alone are not enough to guarantee that organizations and software developers will be able to identify and adopt appropriate privacy engineering techniques in their daily practices. It is also difficult to systematically evaluate whether the systems developed comply with legal frameworks, provide necessary technical assurances, and fulfill users’ privacy requirements. It is evident that research is needed in developing techniques and tools that can aid the translation of legal and normative concepts, as well as user expectations into systems requirements. Furthermore, methods that can support organizations and engineers in developing systems that address these requirements are of increasing value. In this context, privacy engineering research is emerging as an important topic. Engineers are increasingly expected to build and maintain privacy-preserving and data-protection compliant systems in domains such as health, energy, transportation, social computing, law enforcement, public services; based on different infrastructures such as cloud, grid, or mobile. While there is a consensus on the benefits of an engineering approach to privacy, concrete proposals for models, methods, techniques and tools that support engineers and organizations in this endeavor are few and in need of immediate attention. To cover this gap, the topics of the International Workshop on Privacy Engineering (IWPE'19) focus on all the aspects of privacy engineering, ranging from its theoretical foundations, engineering approaches, and support infrastructures, to its practical application in projects of different scale. Specifically, we are seeking the following kinds of papers: (1) technical papers that illustrate the engineering or application of a novel formalism, method or other research finding (e.g., a privacy enhancing protocol) with preliminary evaluation; (2) experience and practice papers that describe a case study, challenge or lessons learned from in a specific domain; (3) early evaluations of tools and other infrastructure that support privacy-related tasks; (4) interdisciplinary studies or critical reviews of existing privacy engineering concepts, methods, tools and frameworks; (5) vision papers that take a clear position informed by evidence based on a thorough literature review. ************************************************************ PAPER FORMAT & SUBMISSION IWPE 2019 offers the choice of archival and non-archival paper submissions. The **non-archival* *option is offered to avoid precluding future submissions to area-specific venues. Accepted archival submissions will be published in IEEE eXplore, which is indexed by EI Engineering Index, ISI Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI-S), Scopus, etc. We solicit short papers (up to 4 pages) and long papers (up to 8 pages) reporting technical, research or industry experience on all dimensions of privacy engineering. Each paper, written in English, must follow the IEEE conference proceedings format. At least one of the authors of the accepted paper is expected to attend the workshop to present the paper. All papers must be submitted via EasyChair at https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iwpe19 ************************************************************ If you have any questions regarding IWPE'19, please contact iwpe19(a)easychair.org IWPE’19 Organizing Committee Jose M. del Alamo (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) Aleksandra Korolova (University of Southern California) Jose M. Nancy Baym talk at Goldsmiths, University of London // 30 January, 5pm
by Mirca Madianou 28 Jan '19

28 Jan '19

Those of you in London may be interested in this talk by Nancy Baym at Goldsmiths. All welcome! Nancy Baym (Microsoft Research) New Media, New Work, and the New Call to Intimacy: The Case of Musicians Wednesday January 30th, 5pm Professor Stuart Hall Building (PSH) 326 Goldsmiths, University of London https://www.gold.ac.uk/calendar/?id=12163 Organised by the Digital Worldmaking<https://sites.gold.ac.uk/technologies-worlds-politics/welcome-to-the-techno…> Research Stream Abstract: The architectures and norms of new media push people toward sharing everyday intimacies they might historically have kept to close friends and family. As more people are pushed toward gig work, the original gig workers - musicians - provide an exemplary lens for exploring the implications of this widespread blurring of interpersonal communication into everyday practices of professional viability. This talk draws on her book "Playing to the Crowd: Musicians, Audiences, and the Intimate Work of Connection", plus nearly a decade of work on the tensions that musicians - and many others - must manage as social media platforms become integral to professional life. Bio: Nancy Baym is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft in New England and Research Affiliate in Comparative Media Studies and Writing at MIT. She began researching online fan community at the start of the 1990s, when she often had to explain the concept that networked computers were used to communicate. She’s written on how people make sense of new communication technologies and weave them into their everyday lives in her books Personal Connections in the Digital Age (Polity), now in its second edition, Tune In, Log On: Soaps, Fandom, and Online Community (Sage), and, Internet Inquiry: Conversations about Method (co-edited with Annette Markham, Sage). She’s appeared in the New York Times, the BBC, NPR, WIRED, Mother Jones, and other news outlets. A lifelong music fan and former independent-record store employee, her new book Playing to the Crowd: Musicians, Audiences, and the Intimate Work of Connection (NYU) draws on years of ethnographic participation and interviews with dozens of artists to show how social media have – and have not – changed the relationships between musicians and audiences and what that portends for workers in other fields. CFP 4S New Orleans Open Panel // Race and/as technology today
by Thao Phan 28 Jan '19

28 Jan '19

*4S 2019 Open Panel Call for Papers* September 4 -7, 2019 New Orleans *Race and/as technology today* Thao Phan, University of Melbourne Scott Wark, University of Warwick In her seminal essay, “Race and/as Technology”, Wendy H. K. Chun proposed that race could be understood as a technology—that is, as neither biological nor cultural, human nor machine, mediated nor environmental, visible nor invisible, but as a category that organises all of these dualisms and many more. Race, she argued, can be thought of as a “technique that one uses, even as one is used by it” (38). Using this essay and its concerns as a touchstone, this panel will ask how we might understand race and/as technology in the present. What is the relationship between visibility/invisibility and race and how is it mediated? How are emergent technologies of control, such as facial recognition, racialised? How might we think categories—like race, person, or population—after Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, and big data? How might these technologies be understood historically? What is the relationship to related categories, such as gender, class or ability, in the technologisation of race? How might analyses of culture help us to understand race and/as technology? If we adopt Chun’s idea that this approach “displaces ontological questions of race” (56), what different things might race be made to do, in the present? We want to bring together scholars working in any discipline touched by these questions to think through what it might mean to consider race and/as technology today. Please feel free to pass on to your colleagues. *Deadline:* Feb 1, 2019 *Submissions:* https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/ <https://www.4s2019.org/accepted-open-panels/> *Conference details: *https://www.4s2019.org/

Facebook Data Collection: app review
by Alexandre Leroux 27 Jan '19

27 Jan '19

Dear colleges, I'm looking for feedback from researchers working on Facebook who tried/passed App Review process. How did it went? Was it successful? Did you fill it stating your research purpose or a more generic aim? My feeling is that FB might be hostile to academic research on its ground but maybe some of you experienced the opposite? Our current project requires downloading a large amount of post and comment from Pages and our API access is locked down since last December and we have yet to submit the review. Thanks in advance, Alex -- Leroux Alexandre Ph.D candidate Group for research on Ethnic Relations, Migrations and Equality Université Libre de Bruxelles
