Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn have paved the way for generating huge amount of diverse, streaming bit data in a short period of time. Such social media data require the application of big data analytics to produce meaningful information to both information consumers and data generators. Machine learning and AI techniques are particularly effective in situations where deep and predictive insights need to be uncovered from such social media data sets that are large, diverse and fast changing. Following the discussion at our workshop at TheWebConf 2018, we aim to focus on how to apply data mining, recommendation, machine learning and AI models, algorithms and systems for analytic and predictive modeling on social media, big data, small data, web and sensor data. Contrary to last year’s workshop, we would like to particularly invite researchers that are interested in going beyond standard analytics approaches and try to discover the intelligent information hidden in the large and fast-changing social media data. Overall, we are interested in receiving papers related to the following topics which include but are not limited to: * predictive analytics methods or frameworks for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and the web * AI, machine learning, deep learning and NLP models, algorithms and systems for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and the web * deep learning approaches and models for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and data from/on the web * data mining techniques and algorithms for social media, big data, small data, sensor data and data from/on the web * methods for learning social activities and behavioral analytic metrics * evaluation of machine learning and AI frameworks and metrics * explainability and transparency of the machine learning/deep learning/AI methods * applications of machine learning, deep learning and AI * applications of any of the above methods and technologies The goal of this workshop is to use data mining, machine learning and AI approaches and algorithms on social media, big data, small data, sensor data and data from/on the web. Submissions: We solicit full research papers (4-8 pages), and short papers (1-4 pages) both in the ACM conference paper style. Papers should be submitted in EasyChair tohttps://easychair.org/my/conference.cgi?conf=msm2019 Proceedings: ============ Contributions will be included in the Companion volume of TheWebConf 2019 conference, which will be published by ACM and included in the ACM Digital Library. However, to make that happen at least one author of the accepted paper has to register. At the time of submission of the final camera-ready copy, authors will have to indicate the already registered person for that publication. Any paper published by the ACM, IEEE, etc. which can be properly cited constitutes research which must be considered in judging the novelty of a TheWebConf submission, whether the published paper was in a conference, journal, or workshop. Therefore, any paper previously published as part of a WWW or TheWebConf workshop must be referenced and suitably extended with new content to qualify as a new submission to the Research Track at TheWebConf conference. Submission guidelines: ====================== All submitted papers must * be written in English; * contain author names, affiliations, and email addresses; * be formatted according to the ACM SIG Proceedings template (https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template) with a font size no smaller than 9pt; * be in PDF (make sure that the PDF can be viewed on any platform), and formatted for US Letter size; * occupy no more than six pages, including the abstract, references, and appendices. Dear subscribers, this is to inform you that we have moved the deadline for the 7th Comparative Media Studies in Today's World conference (CMSTW'2019) to January 22, 2019. The conference gathers interdisciplinary research on media and communication prioritizing comparative, cross-country, and mixed-method approaches. It has established itself as one of the leading conferences on media and communication in Europe, with top world scholars giving keynotes each year. In 2019, the theme is 'Communities. Audiences. Publics', which is definitely of interest for the Internet research community. The conference will take place on April 16-18, 2019 in St.Petersburg, Russia. Our confirmed academic keynote speakers include Jean Burgess (Australia), Barbara Pfetsch (Germany) and other scholars doing research in online media and communication. Publishing opportunities include: - ACM proceedings (still tbc, we discuss the eact series inside ACM); - the best papers selected for special issue of Social Media + Society (Scopus Q1 2017); - one best paper suggested for Digital Journalism (Scopus Q1 2017). The conference has four tracks including Theory, Political&Social, Media Industry, and Methods, with notable scholars as track chairs. For submission instructions, please visit cmstw2019.org - submission via EasyChair is required. Sorry for cross-posting! :) -- Svetlana S. Bodrunova, Prof., D.Polit.Sci. Job posting: PhD student in media communication / linguistics at Ghent University (Belgium): a Brexit-related project
by cbouko 10 Jan '19

10 Jan '19

The Research Centre for Multilingual Practices and Language Learning in Society (MULTIPLES) at Ghent University, invites applications for a full-time position as doctoral researcher. The PhD student will be working on the project “ Representations of intra-EU mobility and extra-EU migration in new media and in their readers' comments, in the context of Brexit”. *Project description* The research is situated in the domain of media communication, discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. The media are considered partly to blame for the Brexit vote, not least because of their biased coverage of migration during the campaign. The project addresses this issue from two angles. Firstly, while most analyses of media coverage still focus on broadsheets vs. tabloids, increasingly popular Internet-only media fall within any of these two categories and remain particularly understudied. Therefore, the project seeks to identify digital-only practices in news-making, particularly regarding mobility in the Brexit context. Secondly, the ‘refugee crisis’ has resulted in fears of the extra-European ‘other’ but intra-European mobility is also instilling fears that undermine one of the very pillars of the EU, namely freedom of movement. Contrary to research to date which focuses on extra-EU migration, this project will analyze the media discourses regarding intra- and extra-EU mobilities, as well as the reactions these discourses trigger in readers’ comments. The news articles published by Buzzfeed UK, The Huffington Post UK and The Guardian are the subjects of the study, together with the comments posted by their readers. By combining the two angles, the project will have scientific impact both regarding new media and migration discourses. *Your profile* - master’s degree in linguistics, communication, or a related discipline, obtained with excellent grades before the start of the project - C2 or native-speaker level in English. The applicants’ skills in English will be tested; applicants below level C2 will not be considered for this research. - excellent academic skills in English - good social and communicative skills - capacity for autonomous research *Your tasks* - analyzing news articles and comments through quantitative and qualitative methods (the data is already collected). - preparing a PhD on the basis of the project - preparing individual and joint publications for national and international scientific journals - presenting research at national and international conferences *We offer* We offer a 48-month PhD position at Ghent University (Research Centre MULTIPLES & Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication). The position is available from 1 May 2019, but the starting date is negotiable up to 1 October 2019. *How to apply?* Candidates are invited to apply by submitting two types of documents by e-mail to Prof. Catherine Bouko (catherine.bouko(a)ugent.be) by 15 March 2019, 23:59 (CET): 1) A single pdf-document with : - a letter of application - a CV (including an overview of the applicant’s study results and the contact details of one person we may contact for a reference) - a copy of the required Master’s degree 2) a personal piece of (scientific) writing in the form of a student paper or publication (e.g. Master thesis or article) in English, demonstrating your academic skills. On the basis of these documents, candidates will be selected for an interview (if necessary, interviews can be held via Skype if the applicants live abroad). *More information* For more information, please contact Catherine Bouko: catherine.bouko(a)ugent.be https://www.ugent.be/en/work/vacancies/scientific/phd-student-in-media-comm… -- Catherine Bouko Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Groot-Brittanniëlaan 45 9000 Gent Belgium Bureau: B2.06 http://research.flw.ugent.be/en/catherine.bouko
