CfP iCS Symposium: Social Movements and Parties in a Fractured Media Landscape
by Mercea, Dan 09 Jan '19

09 Jan '19

Dear Colleagues, Please find below the call for papers for the next Information, Communication & Society Symposium which will be hosted by Cosmos (The Centre for Social Movement Studies) at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence, Italy, on 1-2 July 2019. All the best, Dan ### Social Movements and Parties in a Fractured Media Landscape Deadline for abstracts: 15 March 2019. Abstracts/biographies/contact details should be sent to dan.mercea.1(a)city.ac.uk. A selection of papers presented at the symposium will be published in a special issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society (iCS). More info: http://cosmos.sns.it/news/call-for-papers-social-movements-and-parties-in-a…. This two-day symposium held under the auspices of the journal 'Information, Communication & Society' (iCS) considers the shifting terrain of contemporary democratic politics. Over the course of this decade, a wave of popular discontent swept across much of the world, stoked by the financial crisis, the ensuing austerity and deep disenchantment with political institutions in both liberal democracies and autocracies. Social movements channelled and articulated aspirations for greater democratic accountability and participation, more equitable economic policies, greater concern for social welfare and climate change. Against a secular decline in party membership, voter turnout and institutional trust, movements have rekindled a participatory imaginary challenging the status quo of many democratic countries. Criticized for a supposed inability to enact the political and social change they advocated, social movements were harbingers of a new political vehicle, the movement party. The rise and electoral success of party movements-from Podemos in Spain, to Cinque Stelle in Italy, Jobbik in Hungary, Momentum in the UK or La Republique en Marche in France-captured aspirations for progressive change as well as anger and anxieties about globalisation, migration and the socio-economic and cultural upheaval that such processes have wrought. Occupying the breadth of the ideological spectrum-from the far right to the radical left-these movements put forward a radical criticism of political or media institutions, advocating participatory as well as populist reformulations of notions of citizenship, civic practices and organisational structures. Against the odds, they have scaled up, endured and have the potential to become entrenched despite the initially limited resources available to them. Notwithstanding their ideological differences, digital media appear to have provided important opportunities for the emergence of techno-populist 'connective' movements and parties in media systems largely unfavourable to them, thereby posing renewed challenges to incumbents. Considering the above, the symposium will grapple with such questions as: what does the rising prominence of social and/or party movements mean for democracy? What are the consequences of their rise for representative democracy? What explains their presence on both the left and the right of the political spectrum? How does their digital media use bear on their organisational structures and cultures or their relationship with the media? The symposium invites scholars and other informed observers to present papers discussing how over the last decade, social movements, party movements and other collective actors emerging in the fractured contemporary media landscape have produced knowledge, learn and develop new or overhaul existing participatory cultures and techno-populist identities; congeal competitive political agendas that challenge established political positions; rekindle trust and even faith in political leadership and democratic governance; (re)shaped (un)conventional citizenship norms, practices and action repertoires, harnessing affordances of self-publication technologies, data analytics and news media values to maximize their visibility, appeal and reach while also at times critiquing the dominant commercial logics of media and social media companies. Building on these considerations, we encourage submissions that address but are not limited to the following aims: * Discuss media strategies and/or tactics of social and/or party movements and individual activists, how they relate to ongoing transformation of media systems, shifting media diets and practices that are increasingly dominated by the use of digital and social media; * Map the use of digital technologies in social and/or party movements, the extent to which it inflects on organisational networks, structures and cultures and whether these depart from late-modern and pre-crisis models of political organisation; * Consider how support for social and/or party movements is articulated publicly in squares, on social platforms, through partisan outlets, in mainstream media or combinations thereof and potential reasons for them; * Investigate the language use of social and/or party movements-and responses to it by institutions and various section of the public-particularly as it challenges deliberative norms or if it is associated with disruptive communication techniques such as click-baiting, trolling, spoofing, making use of disinformation or misinformation; * Reflect on the conversion of some movements into parties, the tensions emerging between the grassroots and the leadership once social and/or party movements enter institutions and the extent to which digital media may mitigate or exacerbate such conflicts; * Investigate knowledge transfer and learning processes that transform movements, their support base, organization or goals and the role of digital media in such processes; * Propose ethical methodological innovations especially through the deployment of trace data gathering tools that can facilitate access to and rapport with hard-to-reach, research-apprehensive movement actors like far-right movement parties; * Develop innovative qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods techniques to explore the use of digital media within social and/ or party movements; * Reflect on the bearing of (digital) media and communication strategies and tactics on the electoral success of social and/or party movements in local, national or European elections; * Explore contrasts in the popular mobilization and/or electoral success of populist party movements on the right and the left while contemplating the contribution that digital and social media made to it. We invite 500-word abstracts outlining empirical, theoretical or policy-oriented papers that address these or cognate topics. The abstract should point to study conclusions. It should be accompanied by a 100-word biography of the presenter(s) together with contact details. Abstracts/biographies/contact details should be emailed to Dan Mercea (dan.mercea.1(a)city.ac.uk) All papers presented at the symposium will receive comments from a discussant. Following the symposium, paper authors will be invited to submit their manuscripts for publication in a special issue of the journal Information, Communication & Society.

Algorithms and methodology
by Ignacio Jesús Serrano Contreras 08 Jan '19

08 Jan '19

Very good, to the attention of our Dutch colleagues, My name is Ignacio Jesús, from the University of Granada, and I am doing a doctoral work on the influence of algorithms and new methodological bases in the field of Social Sciences and, specifically, in my field of study, Political Science and the Media. Having said that, I would be interested in being able to do a short stay, as well as being able to get to know a Master's degree or collaborate in a study that has algorithms as its methodological basis. The intention is to know in detail these methods, as well as to have a relation in situ with the developments that are being carried out in the matter. I know that it may be a very specific and generic issue, but as many of my directors as I are interested in the work carried out in Holland in the field of social sciences and, as I quote, algorithms. Even so, any suggestion that any colleague can provide, or any contact that may establish with someone interested in the matter would be to our thanks. Thank you in advance. Yours sincerely, Ignatius Jesus Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator

CFP Shenzhen forum-communication innovation, new media, digital journalism
by Rolien Hoyng 08 Jan '19

08 Jan '19

Dear Colleagues I hope this forum, which includes three separate tracks, is of interest to some of you! Rolien Hoyng ----- *THE SHENZHEN FORUM 2019* COMMUNICATION INNOVATION, NEW MEDIA, AND DIGITAL JOURNALISM <https://www.natcom.org/sites/default/files/pages/Internationalization_NCA_S…> https://www.natcom.org/sites/default/files/.../Internationalization_NCA_She… <https://www.natcom.org/sites/default/files/pages/Internationalization_NCA_S…> <https://www.natcom.org/sites/default/files/pages/Internationalization_NCA_S…> Shenzhen, China, June 26 –28, 2019 Co-sponsored by the Shenzhen University (SZU) of China and the National Communication Association (NCA) THE SHENZHEN FORUM WILL BRING TOGETHER SCHOLARS AND MEDIA PRACTITIONERS from around the world to engage in conversations about cutting-edge communication-based issues. The Forum will include three “tracks”: TRACK 1: EXPERIMENTS IN COMMUNICATION INNOVATION, led by Dr. Rolien Hoyng, Chinese University of Hong Kong, rolienhoyng(a)cuhk.edu.hk (the NCA representative), and Dr. Chen Changfeng, Tsinghua University, fengchen5266(a)163.com (the SZU representative) Despite critiques of the ongoing glorification of “innovation” within multiple corporate spheres, scholars remain committed to both studying and practicing inventiveness, newness, and difference. This track accordingly reflects on how different communicative habits emerge from within processes of technological standardization, global integration, and digital innovation. It looks across the front-end experiences of users and the back-end infrastructures of digital and global communication to prompt participants to consider the dilemmas and opportunities of innovation and inventiveness. On the one hand, the globalization of infrastructures and platforms seems contingent on their ability to accommodate different practices and uses, even while doing so within increasingly standardized settings. On the other hand, new technological applications may not simply partake in ongoing processes of globalization, but also can change where globalization is headed. This track will ask: Does “innovation” support or compromise existing corporate control and statecraft? Does it fuel targeted struggles for social justice in the age of globalization? Or, does “innovation” call forth new communicative possibilities that transcend our understanding? This track will pursue these questions by inviting scholars to share specific case studies of communication “innovation” in practice. TRACK 2: INTERSECTIONS IN NEW MEDIA AND HEALTH COMMUNICATION, led by Dr. Yuqiong Zhou, Shenzhen University, yuqiongzhou(a)126.com (the SZU representative), and Dr. Amy Hasinoff, CU Denver, amy.hasinoff(a)ucdenver.edu (the NCA representative) Traditional health communication scholarship has focused on face-to-face interactions, yet the proliferation of new media technologies means that many patients now speak with their doctor or nurse-practitioner via online messaging platforms, while many health care seekers resort to online systems for information and advice. At the same time, public communication about family health, dieting, gender and sexuality, and aging is now widely practiced via new media platforms, few of which are refereed for accuracy, and many of which are little more than marketing scams. Thus, while there has never before been so much information available to users regarding their health, there has also never been so much disinformation waiting to send users into tailspins of bad advice, risky behavior, and financial ruin. In addition, in both China and America, questions of new media and health communication hinge on access to the internet, meaning these issues touch upon class, wealth, and debates about how “public” the internet really is. In short, health communication and new media are now interlaced in empowering, alarming, and confusing ways. This track will enable participants to study the interweaving of new media and health communication via specific case studies drawn from American, Chinese, and other international contexts. TRACK 3: THE DIGITAL JOURNALISM CHALLENGE, led by Dr. Qingwen Dong, University of the Pacific, qdong(a)pacific.edu (the NCA representative) and Xiaojin Gu, Shenzhen University, gxj(a)szu.edu.cn (the SZU representative) A digital revolution is transforming how we think about journalism. “Legacy” outlets such as the New York Times and People’s Daily face challenges from a vast array of websites and emerging new media platforms. Some of these new outlets offer exciting opportunities for producing “citizen journalism” or “backpack journalism,” thus furthering the cause of social justice. Yet many of them have become the purveyors of lies, conspiracy theories, and calls for violence, meaning the world of journalism is fracturing. For example, in America, the “news” is now produced not only by credible journalists but also by propagandists at Fox, neo-Nazis at the Daily Stormer, and a reality-challenged tweeter from the White House. In China, the “news” is now produced not only by the Party’s many outlets, but by separatists in Xinjiang and radicals in Tibet. In India, Myanmar, and Iran, digital outlets have called for riots and stoked ethnic and religious violence. Many observers are therefore calling ours a “post-truth” age. Indeed, all around the world, we are facing a crisis in journalism that is underwritten by a crisis in notions of evidence, trust, and credibility—with the whole process being driven by revolutions in digital media production and distribution. This track will pursue the causes and consequences of this digital revolution in journalism, and will feature case studies of both negative and positive examples. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS NCA participants will arrive in Shenzhen on the evening of Wednesday, June 25. On Thursday, June 26, we will lead a morning excursion to the international headquarters of TenCent, one of the largest media companies in the world, where participants will interact with China’s new social media leaders. That afternoon, NCA will lead a pre-Forum workshop to discuss best practices in international communication, offering participants an opportunity to engage in open conversation regarding the complicated terrain of academic and political life in contemporary China. The Shenzhen Forum will then hold sessions all day on Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28, concluding Saturday evening with an NCA-hosted reception. Participants will depart from Shenzhen on Sunday, June 29. In an act of great generosity, SZU will cover hotel accommodations for the nights of June 25, 26, 27, and 28, as well as all conference registration fees. To support the travel needs of NCA-member graduate students and early-career faculty members, NCA will award 10 $1,000 travel grants to selected individuals. APPLICATION INFORMATION We invite submissions that address any of the “tracks” cited above. Applicants should submit a project proposal of roughly 1,000 words. Submissions can be made in English or Chinese and should indicate the submitter’s home institution. Submissions should be in Microsoft Word or Adobe.pdf format. The deadline for all submissions is February 1, 2019. Applicants will be contacted with results by March 1, 2019. Please note that we assume all applicants are making good-will submissions and will, if accepted, attend the Forum. Submitters should send their materials to the appropriate “track leader” listed above (with all English language submissions going to the NCA representative for that track and all Chinese language submissions going to the SZU representative for that track). RESULTING PUBLICATIONS Following the model used to publish Imagining China: Rhetorics of Nationalism in the Age of Globalization (Michigan State University Press, 2017), the track leaders will edit two volumes, with one in English (NCA in charge) and another in Chinese (SZU in charge). These are not conference proceedings, but academic books wherein each chapter is an expanded version of the original conference presentation. The track leaders will solicit chapters from the conference presenters and will handle all subsequent book-publishing tasks working in conjunction with the series editor, Stephen J. Hartnett.
