The successful candidate will join an established and successful department, ranked first in the UK’s 2014 Research Excellence Framework evaluation and third in the QS 2016 world university rankings. The Department is known for its distinctive interdisciplinary approach to the field of media and communications, primarily based in the social sciences, but also open to humanities perspectives. Candidates must have expertise in one or more of the following areas of research: audiences and cultural politics, and/or media for development. Within these primary areas, we are particularly (though not exclusively) interested in candidates with research and theoretical expertise in the Global South, with a focus on issues of marginality and social justice, especially around sexuality, race, class and disability. Kindly, Seda Call for Contributions - Algorithms & Society Workshop - Monday 10 December 2018 Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium A workshop organised by Privacy Salon & Law Science Technology and Society (LSTS), Vrije Universiteit Brussel, supported by Open Society Foundations. This call is primarily aimed at academic researchers, civil society representatives, journalists and practitioners working in the area. Recently there have been increased calls for scrutiny of the role that algorithms play in society. Algorithms influence life-changing decisions, yet to-date the transparency about how these models operate remain firmly limited Who is responsible for their introduction, integration, fairness and accuracy? What democratic governance structures are proposed, if made available at all? Who procures, monitors and regulates their use? What can be done about algorithmic bias? What bias beyond that is inherent to the data and algorithms do these systems produce? What are the social and ethical consequences of algorithms for individuals, groups, communities, institutions and societies? There has been a growing discussion on the regulation of and the impact of algorithms on society for some time. However, these discussions have been driven mainly by examples from the US and have stuck to a very general level. In the discussions, algorithmic practices and their impact in Europe and more specifically in the public sector have remained rather invisible. There is a clear need for examples and voices from Europe to inform and enhance the debate about the challenges posed to societies by algorithms. This workshop on Algorithms & Society has the following aims: To understand what legal, social and ethical issues are at stake with regards to the use of algorithms and algorithmic (decision-making) systems in Europe. This includes themes such as algorithmic accountability, algorithmic governance, political economy of algorithms, fairness and transparency but also what impact the implementation of algorithms and algorithmic systems will have on societies, fundamental rights and social justice; To advance the discussion on the use of algorithms in the area of predictive policing and migration policy in particular; To convene the community of researchers, civil society representatives, journalists and practitioners working on the impact of algorithms and algorithmic (decision-making) systems in Europe; To lay the foundation for the organisation of a larger event in 2019 which has the goal to create an interdisciplinary forum for European researchers and experts working on algorithms and automated decision-making. We especially welcome submissions on the following topics: The use of algorithms and algorithmic (decision-making) systems in the public and private sector Europe; Legal, social and ethical issues at stake with regards to the use of algorithms and algorithmic (decision making) systems in Europe; Case studies of the use of algorithms in the context of (Predictive) Policing in Europe; Case studies of the use of algorithms in the context of European Migration Policies. ALGORITHMIC GENDER BIAS IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE 1+3 STUDENTSHIP (MASTERS AND PHD) Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE 2018 South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership Applications are invited for an interdisciplinary four-year PhD studentship at the research Centre for Digital Media Cultures and the Centre for Applied Data Analytics at the University of Brighton. We invite candidates with a social sciences or computer sciences background, or both. The successful candidate will join an internationally recognised team of researchers to investigate the ways in which algorithmic gender bias occurs, and understand how it can be mitigated against, in the specific context of Health and Social Care (H&SC) provision. You will a) map algorithm-based systems currently in use by H&SC providers, b) develop methods that identify gender bias within AI systems, and c) examine ways in which bias can be removed. This PhD studentship will provide an outstanding training in social research methods and computer science data analytics, to produce insights into algorithmic bias, and to develop thorough understanding of the social, economic, cultural, ethical and governance aspects of Artificial Intelligence for future societies. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof Flis Henwood (School of Applied Social Sciences), Dr Aristea Fotopoulou (School of Media), and Prof Anya Belz (School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics). The University of Brighton has internationally recognised strengths in AI research in social science, arts and humanities and computer science contexts, spanning research fields such as data analytics, natural language processing, human-computer interaction and systems security, computer graphics, dialogue and narrative generation, and novel user experiences including Augmented/ Virtual/Mixed Reality. The student will be formally located in the School of Applied Social Sciences but have access to outstanding cross-disciplinary research environments through participation in both the Digital Media Cultures and Applied Data Analytics research centres, enabling them to develop the necessary skills and competences in social framing of technologies, computational technologies, economic imperatives, cultural effects, ethics and governance of Artificial Intelligence for future societies. Eligibiliy We fund students who will undertake Masters + PhD programmes (1+3 funding) and stand-alone PhD programmes (+3 funding). For the Masters + PhD route, you are expected to have a good honours degree at first or upper second-class level, from a UK academic higher education institution or international equivalent, in a relevant social sciences discipline (e.g., anthropology, geography, media and cultural studies, politics, psychology, science and technology studies, sociology) or in computer science, data science, mathematics, or statistics. For the stand-alone PhD programme (+3 PhD award) you would have achieved a level of research training that would allow them to proceed directly to PhD. Our hope is that this coursework will not only be implemented, but also scaled to colleges and universities across the country — and beyond. Between December 2018 and July 2020, we will award up to $3.5 million in prizes to promising proposals. The challenge is open to both individual professors or collaborative teams consisting of professors, graduate students, and teaching assistants. We’re seeking educators who are passionate about teaching not only computer science, but how it can be deployed in a responsible, positive way. The challenge consists of two stages: In Stage 1, we will seek concepts for deeply integrating ethics into existing undergraduate computer science courses, either through syllabi changes (e.g. including a reading or exercise on ethics in each class meeting) or teaching methodology adjustments (e.g. pulling teaching assistants from ethics departments). Stage 1 winners will receive up to $150,000 each to develop and pilot their ideas. Winners will be announced in April 2019. In Stage 2, we will support the spread and scale of the most promising approaches developed in Stage 1. Stage 2 winners will receive up to $200,000 each and will be announced in summer 2020.
