The Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities) is accepting applications for a tenure-track Associate, a tenured Associate or tenured Professor position at a senior level in Communication. A successful new BA in Communication program was launched at UOIT in 2007 and an MA in Communication (Professional) program is planned for 2011. In support of this rapid expansion we invite applications for a core faculty position from candidates with a PhD in Communication and several years of experience in teaching (including graduate level courses and supervision), research and administration. The successful candidate will take on a leadership role within the Communication program and will oversee the launch of the upcoming MA. While all candidates with expertise and experience in various areas of Communication Studies are encouraged to apply, we are especially interested in hiring faculty who can teach in the areas of Organizational Communication, International Communication, Business and Professional Writing, or the Social, Political and Economic impact of ICTs. In my thesis (communication) I am working with uses and gratifications approach to Facebook. One of my objectives it to try to identify uses related to political activity and convergence. This objective suggest an ethnographic approach. Question 1: I would like to know if there are software tools able to record the activity of 10 users that have agreed to let me follow their activity for one month. Even better if these tools were open source. I am also using Lime Survey so I have access to a server in case it is needed. Question 2: I am trying to find readings about best practices in online surveys. I have found advice in blogs and websites about completion time and number of items (1) but I would like to read a deeper analysis. In particular relating the way they become part of everyday life to their role in the development of new infrastructures within both commerce and the state. Long Abstract A key component of many peoples sense of crisis today is the impact of new Digital technologies that seems to constitute a loss of control over the world. For example, one theory of the recent financial crises is that too many financial instruments were set to automatically sell when shares reached a certain level so the crisis was an integral effect of digitisation itself. People's imagination of the digital seems to bifurcate as something that on the one hand lies at the keyboard at the tip of their fingers but at the same time appears as an abstraction from traditional analogue modes of representation. This bifurcation is often what makes the digital appear to be either the cause or the solution of impending crises. Often this imagination is fed from science fiction and images of humans losing control of the planet to the new technologies themselves. This is perhaps the moment when anthropology has to choose how to respond to digital technologies. Whether to demonise them as a form of alienation, to romanticise them as open-source utopias or get to grips with the way they speedily become part of everyday life. To resist this bifurcation we need to link the study of ordinary people's consumption of social networking sites and Google Earth with an appreciation of deeper infrastructural developments such as the digitalisation of financial systems, geographical positioning systems and the impact upon both state and commerce. Third International Workshop on Global Internet Governance: An Interdisciplinary Research Field in Construction Montreal (QC), Canada - 30-31 May 2010 Organized by GigaNet, in cooperation with The Canadian Communication Association and Media@McGill Co-sponsored by GigaNet, ACC-CCA, Media@McGill, LIP6/CNRS and UPMC Preliminary Announcement and Call for Contributions The Global Internet Governance Academic Network (GigaNet) invites you to participate in its third scholarly workshop to be held in Montreal (QC), Canada, on 30-31 May 2010. This workshop is organized in cooperation with the Canadian Communication Association and Media@McGill, during the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) 2010 Congress week in Montreal. Building on the success of its first two editions, respectively in Paris, France in June 2008 and in Brussels, Belgium in May 2009, the purpose of this third GigaNet workshop is twofold: The first day will be dedicated to outreach sessions aimed at increasing the interest in the Global Internet Governance field among both various academic disciplines and the civil society at large, including but not limited to NGOs and civil society groups active in related fields. These outreach sessions will include academic tutorials on Global Internet Governance as well as information and discussion led by experts in the field on current Global Internet Governance debates and their relevance to public policy making. Detailed information on the outreach sessions' program will be distributed closer to the event itself. The second day will feature thematic presentations selected upon submissions made in response to this call for contributions. We invite scholars to present and discuss their work- in-progress in Internet Governance-related research, with the aim to identify emerging research themes and design a research agenda. Rather than featuring academic paper presentations, the workshop aims at providing a survey of current academic activities in the field, in order to share ideas and forge possible collaborations. Submissions are expected to focus on presenting problematics, research designs, preliminary empirical results and conclusions in the aim of stimulating reflection and discussion amongst the audience. Submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following topics: involved actors and their interactions; Internet governance institutions and regimes; legal, socio-economical, behavioral and technical regulation means; Internet governance policy issues.
