Among the media to be discussed, will be business, social, technical and content-related topics. September 6th is the main Academic day, featuring the following themes: Social Media “Get social!” Social media and Web 2.0 technologies are applied in ever diverse practices both in private and public communities. Totally new business models are emerging, traditional communication and expression modalities are challenged, and new practices are constructed in the collaborative, interactive media space. Ambient and Ubiquitous Media “The medium is the message!” – This conference track focuses on the definition of ambient and ubiquitous media with a cross-disciplinary viewpoint: ambient media between technology, art, and content. The focus of this track is on applications, theory, art-works, mixed reality concepts, the Web 3.0, and user experiences that make ubiquitous and ambient media tick. Digital Games The culture and business of digital games is becoming increasingly varied. The current trends range from novel interface innovations and digital distribution channels to social game dynamics and player-generated content. The games track is open for theoretical works, empirical case studies and constructive projects. Open Source Open source software is gaining momentum in several forms. In addition to the huge increase in the number of open source projects started and the remarkable rise of FLOSS adoption by companies, new models of participation in the movement are emerging rapidly. Media Business, Media Production and Media Management Media business and media management face the challenges of the emergence of new forms of digital media. This theme focuses on business studies, policies, practices, and organizational structure of media firms. It discusses competition, patterns of media usage, advertising models, and how traditional media can cope with the challenges coming from digital media focusing on media business and media management issues. In addition, special academic sessions (e.g. tutorials, demonstrations, workshops, and multidisciplinary sessions) will be held on Oct 7th & 8th, parallel to the MindTrek business conference. Academic speakers and authors are warmly welcome to attend the business conference tracks as part of the academic conference fee during these days as well. The MindTrek Association hosts MindTrek as a yearly conference, where the Academic MindTrek conference has been a part of this unique set of events comprising competitions, world famous keynote speakers, plenary sessions, media festivals, and workshops since 1997. It is a meeting place where experts and thinkers present results from their latest work regarding the development of Internet, interactive media, and the information society. MindTrek brings together researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines that are involved in the development of media in various fields, ranging from sociology and the economy, to technology. The organising committee invites you to submit original high quality full papers, long or short, addressing the special theme and the topics, for presentation at the conference and inclusion in the proceedings. Academic MindTrek 2010 offers a wider spectrum of topic areas that previously, and we are looking forward for: - case-studies (successful, and especially unsuccessful ones) - oral presentation of fresh and innovative ideas - artistic installations and running system prototypes - user-experience studies and evaluations - technological novelties, evaluations, and solutions - scientific, business, or media oriented contributions - proposals for own workshops. Paper Proposals All submissions will be peer-reviewed double blinded, therefore please remove any information that could give an indication of the authorship. The scientific part of the conference is organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMM, and ACM SIGCHI. Conference proceedings will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Selected high quality papers will be published in international journals, as book chapters, edited books, or via open access journals. There will also be a reward for the overall best paper from the academic conference. Workshop Proposals Feel free to suggest workshops which are co-organized with MindTrek 2010. Workshop proposals should include the organizing committee, a 1 page description of the theme of the workshop, a short CV of organizers, duration, the proceedings publisher, and the schedule. Workshop organizers also have the possibility to add publications to the main conference proceedings. Tutorial Proposals Tutorial proposals should include a 2-page description of the tutorial, intended audience, a short CV, timetable, required equipment, references, and a track record of previous tutorials. The target length of tutorials is 2 hours. You might consider Zotero, a free service developed by the Center for New Media and History at George Mason that works as Firefox extension. Great for marking and archiving resources you find online, plugins for OpenOffice and Word, nice sync/backup feature, and has options for sharing/collaboration. I use RefWorks online. I do this because both my employer and my school have accounts for us workers and students. I use bibtex as well for my thesis. I also started to use an excel spreadsheet to manage reading. It wasn't until I took a course called legal research methods in my legal studies BA that I became a real useful biblio scholar now I find more things to read than I have time to read., Peter Timusk, B.Math statistics (2002), B.A. legal studies (2006) Carleton University Systems Science Graduate student, University of Ottawa. just trying to stay linear. Call for Papers Iraq: Between the Present and the Future Themed issue of the Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication Themed Issue Editor: Lina Khatib (Stanford University) Papers are solicited for a themed issue of the Middle East Journal of Culture and Communication on “Iraq: Between the Present and the Future”. The purpose of this themed issue is to tease out the cultural, intellectual, artistic, social, and political dynamics in Iraq today and the future vision for those dynamics. The issue aims to understand the challenges and prospects facing Iraq’s present and future on those fronts, while seeking to ground this understanding in an analytical reflection on Iraq’s recent history. Since the invasion of Iraq in 2003, the country has been invariably seen as a victim of Western imperialist aggression, as a prospective democratic state in the making, as the homeland of traumatized peoples on the verge of a civil war, and as a hub of transnational terrorist activities. Discourse on Iraq has been mostly consumed with security issues, hard politics, and economic issues. Literature on how those elements have impacted people’s everyday lives, Iraq’s artistic scene, its cultural milieus and its intellectual arenas deserves to be expanded. Within this framework, this themed issue seeks answers to questions such as: - How have Iraqis co-opted, dissented, and/or resisted Iraq’s political, economic, social and security challenges in their everyday lives? - How has this been mediated in Iraqi art, films, media, and other communication and cultural arenas? - How are ethnic and sectarian tensions being handled in the public sphere and in everyday life and what are the developments in this respect that are being overlooked but which deserve attention? - How can Iraq recover from the trauma of destruction of much of its material culture? - How is Iraq dealing with a traumatic memory that intersects with a traumatic present? - What role have Iraqi (and Arab) intellectuals played in the formation of Iraq’s present? - What is the position of artists, journalists, educators and activists towards the challenges facing Iraq today and what is their vision for its future? - What are the main spaces for dialogue emerging in Iraq that may play a role in shaping a brighter future for the country? - What are the cultural practices through which power is expressed? - How and where is politics performed on the level of the everyday? Scholars from a wide variety of disciplines including geography, international relations, media and communication studies, cultural studies, memory studies, gender studies, sociology, history, anthropology, archaeology, and politics are invited to present innovative responses to those questions in the form of full length articles, shorter reflective essays and critical reviews. Deadline for submission of proposals: 15 May 2010. Notification of acceptance of proposals: 30 May 2010. Deadline for submission of manuscripts for accepted proposals: 1 November 2010. Expected publication date of accepted articles: May 2011. Proposals for articles and reflective essays should be about 500-600 in length. They must clearly describe the proposed approach, and explain the contribution that would be made to the themed issue. Articles should be 6000-7000 words long and include an abstract of not more than 150 words that clearly defines the nature of the article. Reflective essays should be 1500-3000 words and reviews 1000-1500 words. Up to five keywords should be included to identify articles and reflective essays. The conference aims to create a space for intellectual dialogue between the two fields by examining the relations between technologies, and in particular, new digital technologies – the Internet, digital cinema and photography, mobile communication, CCTVs, computer games – and affective politics. Bringing together contributions from the fields of sociology, media and cultural studies, arts, politics and science and technology studies, the conference will engage with the following questions: How does affect work in on-line networks and digital assemblages? What are the affective regimes of on-line sociality? What kind of perceptions, sensations, affective movements and public feelings emerge in our highly mediated and digitalised environments? What is the cybertouch of war, violence, terror? What are the structures of feeling that operate in the digitalised everyday and computerised ordinary? How can we theorise psycho-political formations of nation, race, empire, population and generation in the age of digital reproduction, mediated visions and globalised communication technologies? How do digital cultures shape our political horizons of fear, anxiety, mourning, hate, hope?

Online Dating Studies

I'm preparing to co-lead a core conversation at SXSW on online dating websites and trends. We've been looking at academic work like Judith Donath's as well as the more cheeky but practical research on the OkTrends blog from OkCupid. Does anyone know of good case studies of particular online dating websites, or historical studies of trends in online dating? Sources focusing on website design as well as sociological and psychological aspects would all be helpful. Additionally, any questions about online dating sites and culture that you might be interested in exploring the answers to, or simply discussing, would be great.
