First of all, thanks to Seda Guerses for the reference to _I Love Alaska_ and the thought-provoking discussion on surveillance and related matters. I would just like to say something about one brief comment of yours, Seda, when you say "the filmmakers saw the queries of this anonymous user as her prose and used it to narrate their film (without her knowledge)." I am not qualified to answer technically on the use of the person's prose without their knowledge. But I do know, as I imagine you do as well, that there are any number of techniques related to the internet being used today in poetic (in the broad sense of the term to include fiction, film, etc.) creation. One simple example is to searchengine some term and use the text(s) that are returned in a way similar to what you imply was done in _Alaska_. But my main point is that it is not only the "anonymous user's ... prose" that got used in the film. Maybe this is too picky for your main point, I don't know. But there are really two basic _verbal_ narratives in the film, the written stage directions and the spoken "character" speech based on the aol material. Without going into questions of fair usage, this double narrative is part of what turns the material into a poem (film, in this case). Finally, a third (or more) narrative is provided by the camera work. And one thing that strikes me about the visuals is the sensual or sexual imagery of the nature shots. The camerawork starts with the traditionally female contours of the fields and the mountains. By episode 11, it moves to a phallic tree center screen, so that effectively the photography works its way to an erection, not necessarily male. By the final episode 13, you could say that the tree now leans in toward the center of the shot. Also striking in this final sequence are the power lines at the top of the image, like a techno connection between nature and manufactured commodities. The camera then apparently parodies a cliché from the Western movie, in those last shots where the screen darkens as the clouds move across the sky. So, on this interpretation, do camera, written and spoken texts, and perhaps viewers of the film sort of ride into a techno sunset. This may be very tangential to your discussion, which, as I say, I consider very interesting and valuable, but, well, lots of things are marginal. call for chapters - CHURCH AND NEW MEDIA: PERSPECTIVES, PRACTICES AND FUTURES

As usual, please distribute widely and as is appropriate. thanks, charles == Call for Papers for Edited Book on CHURCH AND NEW MEDIA: PERSPECTIVES, PRACTICES AND FUTURES Editors: Pauline Hope Cheong, Peter Fischer-Nielsen, Stefan Gelfgren and Charles Ess Background and Rationale This book brings together, for the first time in five years, a collection of key articles in the area of religion and the Internet, particularly as new media relates to church, mission and interfaith dialogue. In light of the increasing mediation of everyday life in many parts of the world, this book approaches online religion with a fresh perspective, to account for contemporary developments in media and spirituality, with implications for faith and other civic organizations. Arguably, as institutionalized religions and movements rush to leverage the Web to improve their reach, religious communication on the Internet takes an increasingly significant role alongside more traditional venues for such discourse. It may be, however, that religious use associated with new media problematizes established faith rituals, and religious community building in both its conception and operationalization. Changes in the Church can also be conceived as intertwined with a range of other forms of social and political developments, such that new media acts as an agent and practice to challenge and transform the influence and authority of the Church. Furthermore, as ³new² media is a moving target, there may be past concepts that are more able to explain the nature of church life (such as evangelical mission and systematic theology) or new concepts that are being developed that are better able to address the diversity and complexity of contemporary social and religious life (such as the ideas of social networking, viral marketing and church branding). This edited collection aims to address and inform such issues and debates by offering new empirical, theoretical, and theological insights into how religious life continues to transform and be transformed by these new communication technologies. Current contributors, together with the editors, include Knut Lundby, Heidi Campbell, Mark Johns and Jørgen Straarup. We hereby invite proposals for additional chapters (particularly in the historical and theological sections as explained below) that will complement and expand upon these contributions. Section 1: Theoretical Approaches This section maps the range of theoretical perspectives on religion and new media. A number of different theories have proven useful for researchers and scholars but new media also challenge our theoretical frameworks and categories. How far do current theories ³work² in helping us research and understand the complex interactions between religious life and new media and how far are new theoretical understandings needed? And: what might these new theoretical understandings ³look like² i.e., are new theoretical frameworks and categories available that have yet to be fully explored by scholars and researchers that can be argued to be potentially fruitful? Section II: Historical Perspectives This section discusses the presence and significance of historical perspectives in church and new media research. Transformations in communication media are deeply interwoven with the history and theology of Christianity. In light of this history, how do churches respond to the continued expansion of contemporary communication media? For example, given the close correlations between distinctive forms and modalities of communication including the broad categories of orality, literacy, print, and the secondary orality/literacy of electronic media and conceptions of self, community, and institutional authority, what does this history suggest regarding the possible implications and challenges of contemporary shifts towards new media? Section III: Empirical Investigations This section reports on the empirical research studies that investigate emerging media and social media practices related to the Church. Disciplines represented include but are not restricted to: sociology of religion, ethnography and online ethnography, linguistics, and the social sciences and humanities more broadly as represented within the field of computer-mediated communication. Contributions may focus on, but not restricted to, contemporary uses (successful and not so successful) of new media in the life of religious communities (local, national, international). Guiding questions for such research and studies include: Do the possibilities and affordances of new media lead to genuinely new and demonstrable impacts on the life of congregations? What factors appear to accompany whether or not a given community or institution embraces or resists specific media? What factors are at work in both successes and failures for faith believers and organizations to adopt and adapt to new media? How does religiously related new media use interact or affect the offline practices of established religious organizations? Section IV: Theological Reflections The last section of the book provides theological reflections on the Internet, to forward the development of a theology of the Internet which is a budding field of research. Although practical perspectives and guidelines for Internet use have been published, a more thorough theological analysis of new media is missing. The need for theological clarification is apparent since web-enabled applications challenge churches with a number of difficult questions. Submission Details Please submit a 500-700 word abstract (including important and initial references) to the editors as an email attachment to <churchnewmedia(a)yahoo.com> no later than April 15, 2010. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified by May 31, 2010, and will then be invited to submit a full paper to the editors. Final manuscripts should be no more than 6,500 words, including notes and references, prepared in APA style. The Future of the Internet IV http://pewinternet.org/Reports/2010/Future-of-the-Internet-IV.aspx In an online survey of 895 technology stakeholders’ and critics’ expectations of social, political and economic change by 2020, fielded by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project and Elon University’s Imagining the Internet Center: • Google won’t make us stupid: 76% of these experts agreed with the statement, “By 2020, people’s use of the Internet has enhanced human intelligence; as people are allowed unprecedented access to more information they become smarter and make better choices. Nicholas Carr was wrong: Google does not make us stupid.” Some of the best answers are in Part 1 of this report. • Reading, writing, and the rendering of knowledge will be improved: 65% agreed with the statement “by 2020 it will be clear that the Internet has enhanced and improved reading, writing and the rendering of knowledge.” Still, 32% of the respondents expressed concerns that by 2020 “it will be clear that the Internet has diminished and endangered reading, writing and the rendering of knowledge.” Some of the best answers are in Part 2 of this report. • Innovation will continue to catch us by surprise: 80% of the experts agreed that the “hot gadgets and applications that will capture the imaginations of users in 2020 will often come ‘out of the blue.’” Some of the best answers are in Part 3 of this report. • Respondents hope information will flow relatively freely online, though there will be flashpoints over control of the internet. Concerns over control of the Internet were expressed in answers to a question about the end-to-end principle. 61% responded that the Internet will remain as its founders envisioned, however many who agreed with the statement that “most disagreements over the way information flows online will be resolved in favor of a minimum number of restrictions” also noted that their response was a “hope” and not necessarily their true expectation. 33% chose to agree with the statement that “the Internet will mostly become a technology where intermediary institutions that control the architecture and …content will be successful in gaining the right to manage information and the method by which people access it.” Some of the best answers are in Part 4 of this report. • Anonymous online activity will be challenged, though a modest majority still think it will possible in 2020: There more of a split verdict among the expert respondents about the fate on online anonymity. Some 55% agreed that Internet users will still be able to communicate anonymously, while 41% agreed that by 2020 “anonymous online activity is sharply curtailed.”

A person may also propose a panel session, which may include a second paper that they are presenting. An individual may also submit a roundtable proposal. You may be listed as co-author on additional papers as long as you are not presenting them. This limits each participant to three presentations, all in different formats. For all participants: Please choose your topics of interest and expertise when you register for the conference. Also please indicate if you wish to review for the conference. Dear All, Heritrix: I was reading the manual and I have a little problem understanding how I can set up a crawl job. My task would be to archive only certain pages in a crawl job, i.e., I want to give Heritrix a list of URLs referring to one page each and I want them to be collected (including all components of that page (e.g., PDF files, images, ...). Anybody here which could give me a hint / sample job definition? Thank you very much in advance .
