Fee Waiver for IR11.0 - Deadline extended to July 14

The original call for papers indicated that the deadline for the fee waiver for this year's conference would be tomorrow. In the hope that we would have registration well before that deadline, I've been remiss in posting details on applications for the fee waiver. The deadline has now been extended to JULY 14. Please read the following carefully, and if you have any questions, direct them to vp(a)aoir.org. Registration information for IR11.0 will be made available shortly. Fee Waiver Program In order to increase the diversity of participation in the AoIR annual Internet Research (IR) conferences, the Association of Internet Researchers will make available up to three conference fee waivers per year. The number of fee waivers will depend first of all upon the ability of the conference budget to sustain such waivers (a judgment to be made by the AoIR Executive Committee upon the advice of the AoIR Treasurer and the local organizing committee) as well as upon the quality of the applications for fee waivers. Applications for fee waivers are invited from student or faculty authors whose paper or panel proposals have already been accepted via the AoIR IR conference reviewing process. All applications should be directed to the Vice-President of AoIR (Alex Halavais, vp(a)aoir.org) and must be received by July 14, 2010. Late applications cannot be considered. Applications should be no longer than 2 pages, and must include the following information: 1) A brief description of how the author’s presentation or contribution to the AoIR IR conference will uniquely articulate and/or represent a distinctive perspective (e.g., of persons and/or cultures) otherwise unlikely to be represented at the annual AoIR Internet Research conference. 2) An explanation of the author’s distinctive circumstances that would warrant a fee waiver. These may include, but are by no means limited to: * exceptionally limited financial resources (e.g., as a graduate student or scholar in a non-OECD country, as a disabled person on a limited income, etc.); * exceptional limits on institutional support otherwise normally available (e.g., travel funds, grant funds, etc.); * other exceptional circumstances that render the usual AoIR IR conference fees an insurmountable obstacle to attending the IR conference in order to present one’s own work. Applicants may also include a letter of support from someone familiar with her / his circumstances, special needs, etc. Such a letter is optional, however, not a requirement. Applications will be reviewed by the AoIR Executive Committee. Fee waivers will be awarded on the basis of the Executive Committee’s collective judgment as to which presentations will make the most distinctive contribution to the AoIR IR conference. In order to respect and protect the privacy of the applicants, all Executive Committee discussions and deliberations of fee waiver applications will be held in strict confidence. The AoIR Executive Committee regretfully acknowledges that there will be more fully meritorious applications than we will be able to award and support. Nonetheless we hope that awarded fee waivers will not only assist deserving scholars and researchers, but also thereby enrich the AoIR IR conferences in important new ways. Best, Alex Halavais

The Sociology and Economics of Networks and Services Team at Orange Labs/France Telecom R&D is seeking to recruit a PhD candidate, ideally able to start in October, based at the Orange Lab Center in Paris ( http://www.orange.com/en_EN/innovation/) to work on a research project investigating the dynamics of Collective Intelligence based on mobiles data. This PhD proposal deals in particular with the detection of emerging behaviors and knowledge based on collective information - where the individual observation reveals noise.The successful candidate will explore the different forms of collective intelligence which can be implemented, from the voluntary contribution using the interfaces of mobile devices, to indirect contribution using the cells informations. He/She will investigates the reflexivity effects on behaviors and attitudes when users interacts with theses social cognitions . The successful candidate will be graduated in information/sociology/psychology/cognitive/urban sciences. He/She will have a strong interest of multidisciplinar research methods, especially human complex systems or behavioral sciences. He/She will be able to demonstrate skills in networks analysis or social data mining. He/She will be expected to collaborate with practitioners to help create relevant and valuable knowledge. Successful candidate will be highly motivated, and shows good team-work and organisational skills. Spoken and written French skills, even if not mandatory, are strongly relevant. CALL FOR PAPERS E-SCIENCE 2010 http://www.escience2010.org/ Scientific research is increasingly carried out by communities of researchers that span disciplines, laboratories, organizations, and national boundaries. The e-Science 2010 conference is designed to bring together leading international and interdisciplinary research communities, developers, and users of e-Science applications and enabling IT technologies. The conference serves as a forum to present the results of the latest research and product/tool developments and to highlight related activities from around the world. Building on last year's emphasis, we are particularly interested in advances in the application of technology in a particular discipline. Accordingly, significant advances in practice will be considered as important as the development of new technologies themselves. Further, we welcome contributions in educational activities under any of these disciplines. Studying online community

Hello everyone, I'm just getting started on my PhD studies, unfunded as yet, regarding new social technologies and online communities and would really appreciate any hints, tips and advice members of this list may have on good information sources, relevant publications, events and so on. Broadly speaking, I'm interested in how communities extend from the online to the offline and vice versa, how participation in online communities becomes part of every-day life, how the lines between offline and online communication and relationship building are blurred as access to online social tools becomes ubiquitous. More specifically, I am looking at how new social technologies affect local communities and what developers should take into consideration while creating new tools with a view of fostering online community. I hope to come up with results that offer an insight into how the concept of community is changing for members of a hyper-connected society, and the implications of that change for local communities. My research approach is ethnographic. It would be great to hear from others with similar interests, and also perhaps to discover fellow "sufferers" at similar stages of their academic careers, for a bit of mutual support and encouragement. :) Of course, any advice would be hugely appreciated! Hil all, I'm wondering whether there's enough interest to put together an informal new media studies grad school fair for prospective students at the AOIR conference? The timing in early fall is perfect for applicants, and I imagine there are a few attendees who might welcome the chance to talk with folks from various programs. If there is a need for this, I would be happy to try to put something together for AOIR in Seattle (I won't be in Sweden). Hi Theo, Before I flog my own program, I would suggest looking for existing research on the areas that interest you and then seeing where the authors are located. Always make sure there are at least 3 people at any program you apply to that you could work with since faculty come and go without warning. Get that paper for AoIR submitted for publication asap, you want that submission on your vita when you apply. Finally, apply to multiple programs (I applied to 7) to ensure you have choices and have a basis for negotiation on funding and other perks. Now the plug: Pound for pound one the best programs in the US - Communication Studies at the University of Washington. Lots of heavy hitters in new media both in Comm and at the I School. AoIR will be there next year. Good funding with lots of TA slots (big program) and they are a "tool box" program that allows space for a wide variety of research interests and theoretical and epistemological approaches. Good teacher training which will give you an edge when you come out - can't stress that enough They also have good relationships with the local tech sector. Seattle has an NFL team with a rabid and tech savvy fan base and is a large metro area with a small town feel. Good town/gown relationship, pretty, great mass transit, great food. Has there been any sociological work done on how precocious teens participating in online discussion affects them later in life?

I made the observation to a friend today that there is a cohort of precocious people, between the ages of about 13 to 30, who have had this unifying experience of being online at an early age and interacting with people significantly older than they were as peers. My hypothesis is that this shared experience bound these people together in a way similar to how moving around a lot as a child created the phenomena of the Third Culture Kid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thi... ). As someone who has gone though that experience, I felt like it's profoundly affected my development, in both positive and negative ways. I also feel like I'm able to identify other people who share this background because it affected them in many of the same ways. I want to learn more about this phenomena and I'm wondering what resources are out there right now that investigate this? Cheers Hang

Choosing a Ph. D. program

AoIR Peeps, Hello all. This is one of the stranger requests that will come down the pipe, but Dr. Cornish said it was OK to ask, so here I go. I will be graduating from Northern Illinois in the Spring of 2011, so I have to start looking at doctoral programs now. My research interests are in new media and technology and its integration with social networking and fandom with a journalism and sports media tint. (I'm really a quad) My thesis, on NFL Players and Twitter, has been accepted for AoIR 11.0 and I am pretty stoked to see many of you there. AoIR 10 in Milwaukee really opened my eyes to the field, and my research interests are brimming. I know I'm not going to find an exact fit, but can anyone give me some advice? AoIR doesn't have a program database, and NATCOM is so vast, I'm getting lost in it. I've found some programs with AEJMC, but I'd really appreciate some guidance. Geography doesn't matter, but I have to stay in the States. My iguana and fiancé don't want me to leave. :( Thanks for your time and consideration! Until next time, Theo
