PrivacyCampTO: Privacy for everyone! Ryerson University, June 19, 2010 PrivacyCampTO will convene participants from all walks of life, including educators, techies, policymakers, students, academics, librarians, and casual users to talk about privacy issues and solutions in the age of social media ubiquity. We will look at privacy issues relating to everyday users and everyday situations both practically and theoretically. In other words, privacy for everyone. So, come to discuss privacy policy, learn how to protect yourself on Facebook or share your online privacy experiences (positive or negative). We're aiming to have a friendly, informal and accessible event. Everyone is invited to participate or present and we encourage those presenting to do a more informal led- conversation or speed geek in lieu of a PowerPoint. I just received ethical approval to begin collecting data for a small research project I am working on while en route toward my PhD, and I am inviting potential participants to consider being interviewed for my work. My research is entitled "Faculty Support: Doctoral Students, Threshold Concepts, and Technology Enhanced Learning," and I am looking for faculty members who supervise / tutor / mentor doctoral students, and who have supported these students during periods of significant perspective / ontological / epistemological / worldview change as a result of their studies, to consider participating in my small research project. The Big QR > City of New York Blankets Times Square With Giant QR Codes

To celebrate Internet Week 2010, the City of New York outfitted Times Square with giant QR codes earlier today. It’s called “The City at Your Fingerprints” and eleven New York agencies participated in the interactive billboard initiative. Times Square denizens could use their smartphone barcode scanning app to scan the QR codes — which were featured in an animated sequence on the Thomson Reuters building in Times Square from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. ET — and pull up information relating to specific agencies being featured. If so, this workshop is for you. For the past five years, the National Museum of Australia’s Centre for Historical Research and the Australian National University’s National Centre of Biography (incorporating the Australian Dictionary of Biography), School of History and Humanities Research Centre, have collaborated in hosting ‘Using Lives’, a week-long intensive residential workshop for postgraduates from around Australia, held in Canberra. ‘Using Lives’ for 2010 will run in the week beginning 13 September. Biography and ‘life writing’ figure increasingly in humanities and social science research. These approaches have expanded in accessibility and innovation by adapting to new technologies, exploring new materials and perspectives, and advancing new agendas. This workshop provides a forum in which postgraduate students can discuss aspects of this ‘biographical turn’ in relation to their work. Core objectives for the week are to: i) generate reflection and debate on issues of biographical enquiry; ii) develop networks to assist in research and professional development; iii) explore opportunities for the presentation of biographically-informed work The workshop consists of morning sessions, led by experts in areas related to these objectives, and afternoon sessions in which students present their research for discussion. The workshop is integrated with the Seymour Lecture in Biography at the National Library of Australia, this year to be given on 16 September by Frances Spalding. Attendance (including lunch and morning and afternoon refreshment) at the workshop is free of change for successful applicants, as is self-catering accommodation at the ANU’s Liversidge Court apartments. Successful applicants will need to fund their own travel to the Canberra. Applications should take the form of: i) a one-page statement outlining your thesis topic, approach and objectives, including your stage of candidature; ii) a brief CV; iii) and a brief letter of support from your supervisor.
