Call for Papers: 'pig' Edited by Donna Lee Brian and Adele Wessell In George Orwell's Animal Farm, the pigs changed the law to read 'Some animals are more equal than others'. From Charlotte's Web to Babe, there are a plethora of contemporary cultural references as well as expressions of their intelligence and worth that would seem to support the pigs' cause. Pigs also give a voice to many aspects of popular culture and feature in fairytales, cartoons, comics, movies and novels. However, simultaneously, the term 'pig; is also synonymous with negative attributes - greed, dirtiness, disarray, brutality and chauvinism. 'Pigs' are also used to name those out of favour police officers, the obese, capitalists and male chauvinists, but also to give expression to the most unlikely events - as in, 'pigs might fly'. As food, pigs are both for feasts and forbidden, their meat the site of both desire and disgust. Their faces on platters and their feet in pots, they are smoked, roasted, organic, free-ranged, acorn-fed and farmed in the worst of industrial food producing factories. Snuck into dishes during the Inquisition to expose false conversos, pigs are unclean and inedible, rich and fatty/fattening, yet at the same time at the heart of tip-to-tail eating and some of the most expensive and desired of foodie products: heritage and Spanish hams, for instance. They are the other white meat. This issue of M/C Journal will be organised around responses to these multiple meanings of 'pig'. As editors, we approach this topic from our own joint areas of research interest of food studies and writing, but we are equally interested in the symbolic importance of 'pig' in all current and past culture and media. That is, for example, in pigs as pets and wild pigs, their place in medical innovation - significant research, for instance, is investigating using pigs' hearts for human transplants, since the size and mechanism of an average-sized pig heart is very close to one of ours - in religion, and in the history of pigs in folklore and myth. CFP First Asia Cyber Emotions International Conference, KyeongSan/ Daegu, South Korea, Dec 2-3, 2010 Conference Summary The Cyber Emotions Research Center at YeungNam University in South Korea is holding the 1st Asia Cyber Emotions International Conference from December 2-3 (Fri-Sat), 2010. As the online population grows and social interactions are increasingly influenced by Internet technologies, human emotions have been observed in online user behaviour. It is important to understand how online environment catalyses offline emotional characteristics, and transfers them into e-communities. The workshop aims to bring scholars working on related academic fields such as social sciences, computer and information sciences together to examine the (emerging) issues of feelings concerns the contemporary computer-mediated e- society. The workshop aims to examine the current and possible theoretical frameworks and investigate new approaches and techniques for detecting, measuring and evaluating feelings in cyberspace and the associated effects. GigaNet is a scholarly community that promotes the development of Internet Governance as a recognized, interdisciplinary field of study and facilitates informed dialogue on policy issues and related matters between scholars and governments, international organizations, the private sector and civil society. CFP Update: Telecommunications Act Rewrite. The recently announced initiative in Congress to update the Communications Act makes even more relevant the upcoming experts workshop on "The Broadband Act of 2011: Designing a Communications Act for the 21st Century" (details attached). Scholars wishing to make their voices heard and interested in participating in the national debate on the future of the Internet and broadband networks are offered the opportunity to do so through this Workshop. Action by Congress may supersede the FCC's proposal to reclassify the regulatory status of broadband and redefine the scope of the FCC's authority. (See: http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Congress-Pushing-For-Communications-Act-R ewrite-108571/) Call for Paper Proposals The Broadband Act of 2011: Designing A Communications Act for the 21st Century A by-invitation experts workshop New America Foundation, Washington, DC September 28-30, 2010 The passage of the National Broadband Plan in March 2010; the heated debate over Title II reclassification; the ongoing deliberations regarding the NPRM on Network Neutrality; the Comcast-NBCU merger proceedings; and the April 2010 Appeals Court decision in Comcast v. FCC, all point to the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the Communications Act. The last time such a wide-ranging initiative took place was in 1996. That effort led to a blueprint for competition in local telephony markets, universal service reform, and deregulation of media ownership rules, all of which have had an effect on the structure of the media and telecommunications industries today. But it barely addressed the broadband Internet. Now, 15 years later, it is clear that a new legal framework is required to confront the challenges created by a national network that is broadband based. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State and the Open Technology Initiative at the New America Foundation are pleased to announce this Call for Paper Proposals (Abstracts) discussing the rationale, needed amendments and steps to be taken in order to bring the Communications Act of 1934 up to date for the broadband era. The selected papers will be presented and discussed during a three-day by-invitation experts workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts and to be held at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC, September 28-30, 2010 with the goal of engaging the policy and law making community in a dialogue, and then publishing the papers in an expedited manner. Suggested paper topics may include, but are not limited to: * New legal theories for the regulation of broadband * Outlining and/or drafting a new section of the Communication Act * The need for network neutrality legislation * Amendments necessary to achieve universal broadband * The role of the government beyond basic provision of access * Legal responses to interconnection reform * Restructuring the Federal Communications Commission * The role of competition among broadband networks * A new approach to spectrum management/regulation * Copyright legislation in the broadband era * Advancing the goals of the National Broadband Plan * Any other aspect of the Communications Act that requires attention at this time of technological transition Abstracts of up to 500 words and a short bio of the author(s) should be submitted to pennstateiip(a)psu.edu by June 30, 2010. CALL FOR CHAPTER PROPOSALS Proposal Submission Deadline: July 15, 2010 “Networked Sociability and Individualism: Technology for Personal and Professional Relationships,” A book edited by Francesca Comunello Sapienza Università di Roma, Italy To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com Introduction The rise of individualism has been recently described in terms of “networked individualism” or “individualized networking” (following Wellman and Castells). Instead of being organized in groups, our lives are articulated around multiple networks, while our forms of sociability are getting growingly increasingly privatized. The new patterns of sociability seem to be built on multiple me-centred networks: each person «becomes a communication and information switchboard, between persons, networks, and institutions» (Wellman, 2004). Far from proposing an atomized vision of individuals, these Authors underline the growing degree of responsibility people experience in their everyday activity of relationship management. The concept that better describes the forms of sociability we are experiencing is, in my opinion, Castells’ networked sociability. Digital technology is not determining this process: it is rather enabling each person to build and manage their own social networks, both on- and offline. The recent popularity of Social Network Sites (SNS) such as My Space, Facebook, Linkedin, etc. shows that there is a growing interest in articulating, making visible, and managing personal or professional relationships through technology-enabled environments. The phenomenon addressed is wider than Social Network Sites, and includes the wide variety of ways in which people are linked to each other. Objective of the Book In the proposed publication we will on a variety of Social Media and Computer-Mediated Communication environments, in order to underline the ways in which people articulate their social relations and the related individualized identity performances. In this book's analysis, Social Network Sites will play a major but not exclusive role. For a better understanding of the identity performances and of the ties’ strength, this book will not only focus on SNS, but rather consider the wider context, includingthe variety of ways in which people are linked to each other (a context where old and new media collide, and where mediated and face to face social relations are growingly integrated). Nevertheless, SNS are powerful playgrounds, both for the user and for the researcher. a sociological point of view, one of the main point of interest of Social Network Sites, let alone their constantly growing popularity among internet users worldwide, is that they represent powerful environments to observe publicly articulated self presentation and identity performances: SNS make such processes visible, trackable, and, therefore, easy to study. Far from constituting an alternative or “virtual” world, social media are embedded in everyday life: using Social Network Sites, people connect to each other in ways they perceive seamless to face-to-face relations. Nevertheless, the above mentioned “trackability” enables people’s awareness (we are now more consciously engaged in our personal network management). This book will analyze this increased consciousness, fully exploring the technology and impact of our social networks in the current social atmosphere. Submission Procedure Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 15, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by July 30, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 30, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.
